Welcome Indy Cotton signs as a Cat B rookie

Doesn’t look like he’s going to hit key player size to me, more tall flanker. So I don’t see him as depth for Murray or Keane, maybe Woz, but he’s a very strong bloke. I highly doubt he’ll end up in the KPP depth charts. But who knows.

You’re right that he could be a flanker but that’s why it might better to put him at half back instead of half forward, where it generally considered harder to develop.

Doubt he plays much AFL in his first season, but it’s about the best way to transition him back after not playing for so long.

His Dad was a good player so it was worth a risk.
As long as Indy doesn't try to copy his dad's kicking technique I'll be happy

A few years ago Jarrod got to watch his son's U11 grand final in the morning before coaching a Norwood semi final in the afternoon

Gryan Miers stopped me looking at kicking technique as something that actually matters.

Miers' technique is okay. Guides it down properly, low, controlled ball drop

Just kicks around the corner. But so did D Jars a bit and he was okay, as was Sam Mitchell

Cotton actually held the ball upside down. Laces towards him, then spun the ball 180 degrees during the ball drop. Was incredible really. The Paul Adams Frog in a Blender of AFL

He was difficult to watch.

Miers ball drop isn't low. He drops it from high and kicks across his body. It almost looks like a golf swing with the way his leg moves. It's the weirdest looking kick in the AFL imo. He's kind of like the anti-Fogarty who has a very compact kicking style.

Looks pretty good to me. He's just like those forwards who've started kicking around the corner for all their set shots, except he does it for field kicks too. Balanced, controlled, fluent.

Then, in the unusual category...

That photo doesn't show it well because he actually lifts the ball slightly before he drops it. Maybe wrong to say it's high but it definitely looks like something you see little auskickers do.

I agree that it's not unlike modern forwards snapping the ball more. I think coaching has become more liberal. They're less obsessed with technical correctness than they used to be. They're telling players to do what feels right to them. You can now tell which forwards don't trust themselves to kick a drop punt.

I would put O'Brien in the uncoordinated ******* category. "Unusual" doesn't do it justice.

I think we have to accept there’s no such thing as a Tex replacement. He was one of the best forwards of the modern era. Severely underrated IMO. All we can hope for is minimising the impact of his loss.
I understand your point, but TT looks to have a good chance being as good a player as Tex. Not exactly the same type of player (much better mark, very good field kick but not on Tex’s level), but overall quality-wise looks like he’ll be at least close.

There are very few direct like for like players .....but each new champion have their own traits

Curtin is unique ...... Thilthorpe is unique ....Rankine is unique ....let's appreciate those unique skillsets

Isn't Miers literally the best inside 50 kick in the comp? Why are we comparing that to ROB
There is no comparison as one is very skilled & the other is unco.

eeeeh, I'm a massive Tex fan but Thilthorpe (as long as he doesn't lose years to injury) will be the better player

Tex was a unique type of player. Not quite big enough to be a monster forward, but one of the highest skilled medium to tall forwards the modern game has seen. His field kicking on both feet over distance is and has been league best for years and his footy smarts are up there with the best.

Thilthorpe is a very different player as he IS a massive unit that can physically dominate. He is a pack marking beast that is also very athletic. I see Thilthorpe's best years being the Key forward inside the forward 50 where we look to isolate him as in the air and on the ground he can dominate. Tex was much more of a ranging forward that could hurt you from distance.

Miers technique is on another planet compared to jars and Mitchell. They're both fairly conventional by comparison (thought Mitchell was very conventional).

Miers technique is crazy, but he's obviously got amazing coordination so it doesn't matter for him. A real outlier.

Someone in commentary made an analogy that if normal kicking is times new roman, Mier's is wingdings.
