Until we finish higher than 10th and show more consistency we were pea hearts last season and that’s were we start from , a 10th bog team.

Some need to go watch some games last season and get a realistic perception. We were average af , getting punished from teams like the dons and multiple run ons ( gc ).

Let’s not jump the gun , let them show us
Crows game was diabolical

Glass half empty again eh Punts ?
You might be right, but then again maybe not. A lot has changed.
I'll be my usual glass half full until proven otherwise.

Who knows what has changed if anything

Embarrassing games like the crows , port , GC and dons games should be looked at by the playing group of embarrassment

Last year we didnt have errol for most of it

Our kpf was solely mclean a bunch of the games

Our draw was harder from being minor premiers

We now have a longer preseason and conditioning from missing finals

We beat brisbane at the gabba to show we still have it if the boys get over their mental block

It would be a disaster missing top 4 with our list, i think we will be right at the top again

New CEO.
Coaching group has changed significantly.
New spearhead.
A couple of trades with potential.
New kids but they're not likely to make a big direct impact yet.
So change has occurred, some of it pretty significant. Whether those changes have the desired effect remains to be seen but dwelling on (as opposed to debriefing) those horrible games is more likely to be counterproductive.
Negative self-talk is the kiss of death.

Maybe they were looked at by all involved, none of us on here are privvy to what really goes on. Perhaps working to avoid those embarrassments played a big part in last year's trades and drafting and in this year's game plan.

Cmon Punts, allow a bit of optimism in preseason!! If not now, then when?

In fairness to Cox, he didn’t have a lot of time to make changes post the GF loss which we can all admit was a particular low point in following the club.

This is his first full trade, off-season and preseason in the Coaching gig and there is cause for optimism with the changes made, on paper at least a very productive trade and draft period with a preseason very similar to 23/24, low injuries to key players and our stars more or less getting the training and conditioning in.

We need to remember we were hampered with injuries mainly to our forward line, Logan, Amartey and Paps either didn’t play or minimised games and in Paps case not match fit, when he did play.

Two of our best leaders missed first half of the year, Mills and Gulden.

Add in new coach, the year was a bit of a write off in retrospect.

When we had Mills and Gulden back in the team, we finished strongly 8 wins out of 11 games to finish the season. Which in itself is cause for optimism when you add in the three forwards plus Curnow and hopefully another season of embedding Coxs game plan.

In addition coaching panel has beeen bolstered with some smart appointments.

Optimism is not unfounded but will be good to hear what you see when you check out training, etc

Now, you're talking! Let's go!

The Crows game in 2025 was awful, yes. But it wasn’t as bad as the Port game in 2024.

I also acknowledge 2024 finished badly but we weren’t a 10th ranked side that year.

We’d all love to know why, when this current version of the team disintegrates it does so so spectacularly, but those awful games aren’t the best measure of a team’s overall quality.

What's changed? How about we start with the list, the coaching staff, the depth, and the game plan.

Take a look at literally any of the reports in this thread or from the media regarding how sharp and dynamic we're looking in pre-season.

Of course that counts for naught when the season actually starts but it's silly to put your head in the sand and pretend that the club hasn't done anything to improve. Taking any team's worst handful of performances across a season as a benchmark is illogical.

"Prove it" is all well and good, but suggesting this isn't a finals team is living in fantasy land.

Aiming to get Papley ready for OR

Papley is cooked. All the preseason strength and conditioning training with the specialist and he still has ongoing issues. Seems like we can only get 5-10 games a season out of him now. He usually takes 3-4 games to get going after an injury/niggle. Feels like Mills MKII, can see why we brought in Dattoli and Rosas to provide more depth and coverage for the future.

Updates from today:

* I wasn't there from the beginning but when I arrived they were doing full-field play but with less of a A and B team e.g. Heeney was playing for the Green team. Near the end they moved to doing drills involving most of the players (not the rucks) and most of the field, practising transtioning from defence to attack I think and at this point, like on Friday, one side wore orange bibs.

* On the sidelines, returning from injury: Adams (doing some running exercises), Papley (ditto), Riak Andrew (still at least 2-3 weeks away), Edwards (minor hamstring issue after Friday), Wicks.

* In concussion protocols, limited involvement in training, doing running together: Snell, Grundy, Amartey

* A bit sore: Phillipou - doing running exercises on his own pretty much all session. Applied himself diligently. Mentioned that he is living with family (rather than teammates) although he had only been to Sydney once before this pre-season.

BIGGEST SCOOP: Mike Pyke has been brought in to provide some additional ruck coaching support. He came armed with medicine balls (is that what they're called?) and spent some time with Grundy, Ladhams and Green. Then he scooted off early to return to life in the business world. He has 3 kids (boy, girl, boy) - too you to be interested in footy (yet!). He was keen to be involved mostly just to give something back - enjoys being part of a great club.

There was another tall visitor. He was taller than Cox and spent a bit of time chatting with him on the field, all kitted out in Swans gear. I don't know who he was.

Another visitor was former AFL journo and (more recently) former Liberal politician, Mark Stevens. He spent a long time talking to Tom Chadwick from our media team. I believe he's returned to media work with Zero Hanger. If I'd had the chance I would have asked him why he was visiting. Maybe watch out for content on Zero Hanger in coming days.

Cootee's injury does seem to be worse than we thought earlier. Today he told me his is another 6-8 weeks from returning to play. I asked if he had had a setback and he said no. I mentioned he had told me he was a couple of weeks from returning to play last week and he mumbled something about being a couple of weeks from moving to the next phase (presumably involvement in drills with balls or something, I didn't quite follow). He's living with mates rather than with teammates.

For a long time I thought Kyle was missing again but then I think I spotted him near the end and I presume he had been there all along. Much better that he wasn't missing.

Logan McDonald looked reasonably lively, getting the ball, mostly uncontested.

I spotted an incident involving Rosas that reminded me of that other 'shortcutting' observation. Towards the end of training they were doing the transition exercise. Rosas was on the team not wearing bibs and they all had to lie down on the ground and start from a prone position before the ball was kicked in by a coach. Rosas wasn't lying flat on the ground like the others (more on his knees/planking with his arms out straight below him) and Hamling (wearing orange bib) came over and pushed him down to the ground. Then, seemingly to make up for that, when the play started Hamling assisted him to get up.

Ladhams looked very lively and was asserting his dominance over Green. While the gap between them may have closed I think Ladhams clearly has his nose in front at this stage. He also impressively baulked and stepped around Clearly who was defending him at one point (reminding me of how he has claimed to be a "small forward trapped in a ruck's body").

McCartin showed off his prowess reading the ball in flight in windy conditions.

King looked less spritely than on Friday.

Chamberlain is looking more comfortable than he did early in pre-season.

At the moment, of our new draftees, I'd say Hetherton is the one who has shone least (due, no doubt, to the fact that he is still recovering from an injury sustained early-mid last season). Overall I feel buoyant and excited about the how we did at the draft, despite trading away our first rounder: we got a player others rated as a first rounder (Kyle), a player we reportedly rated as a first rounder (King), and a player who rates himself as pick 1 (Phillipou). Plus Cootee (who has a high floor, if not a high ceiling), Chamberlain and Hetherton (a KPF, which was a position we needed depth in).

One of my contacts in the media down here has got donuts from Chadwick
Mark Stevens i know hates us typical bulldog rat

Bummed re Cootee, i have high hopes for him so it's a bit of a frustration that he won't have a clear run at it from the get go, much like Dattoli last year, hope his hopes don't fizzle out due to the delay. These stress injuries for our new recruits have now been an ongoing problem since Gulden's draft year.

The Papley, Riak, Edwards and Wicks + concussions news is just annoying. Why are we all of a sudden perpetually injured and concussed.

Still seeing 'Logan' and 'uncontested' in the same sentence gives me the shits. I would like to see him earn every touch, i want our defenders to make him eat dirt at every opportunity.

Still better than many others at this stage

Speaking of Mark Stevens, here is his report!

Sydney will hold livewire Tom Papley back for another week as he recovers from calf soreness.

Papley stepped up his work on Monday, but remained mostly away from the main group.

The Swans will resist the temptation of playing him in Friday's full-scale match simulation.

It will be a huge session before the club goes on a short break prior to ramping up preparations for the season opener against Carlton at the SCG.

The Swans have circled February 19 as Papley's return date, when he will be eased in for a full-scale practice match against the Western Bulldogs.

Although Papley will look on this Friday, the Swans have confirmed Brodie Grundy and Joel Amartey will return from concussion protocols in time for match simulation.

The Swans looked sharp on Monday morning in a wind-affected session and have few injury concerns despite a rash of soft-tissue problems across the AFL.

Taylor Adams returned to the track in a solid running session off the side of the main group.

Adams was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital in a late night incident nine days ago, but is in good spirits and recovering well.

A noticeably stronger Tom McCartin taking on marquee recruit Charlie Curnow was the highlight of the session.
