There are more platforms and avenues than there have ever been for smaller independent films though too.
Cool what about the mid-sized films?
It’s all just at a much much bigger volume. It’s not like they’re not making any good movies anymore, they’re making more there’s just more other stuff to wade through.
I'm not saying good movies aren't getting made I'm saying stuff like Disney being so big is bad

Also bemoan the mcu and avatar and f1 all you like but they’re clearly very popular (and to true cinema lovers very good too) so of course they’re gonna make more of them.
Never mentioned avatar or f1 I literally was just saying you can't pretend the MCU or the size of Disney doesn't have a negative impact on things

I mean you can and frequently do, but that doesn't make you correct

And please true cinema lovers?

No need for that kind of comment

Kinda like agreeing with the comment “anyone who loves film”.

What’s mid sized now? Cause sinners cost $90m and it got greenlit.

A certain genre of mid budget is getting made less and less but I personally don’t think it’s impacting the quality, not a stack of those films are or were in the discussion regarding counting “great films being counted on one hand”.

I’ve made no comment on Disney or Netflix or anything else. FWIW I think there is good and bad to it. They’ll fund some good stuff and they’ll fund some bad stuff.

The crux of the convo was they don’t make em like they used to (I don’t agree) and that the MCU is ruining film (I also don’t agree).

It’s all an opinion so all this right or wrong stuff is pretty moot too.

Yeh and it ended well after putting some in their early 60s, hardly way past you.
Enough past me that I'm not a f**king boomer.
Like what you like (I like the mcu) but you should be able to see its flaws and edges
Hey, I see them all. I like the original Star Wars movies (well, two and a half of them), but I don't love them. I loved them when I was 8 to about 12 or 13. I still like them, but I don't rate them anywhere near as highly as others do. Same goes for the prequels and sequels. They're okay. Not terrible, not great either.

Was interesting to see an older couple walk out on The Bone Temple today in my showing of it. They did not return.

It was during a particularly intense and graphic scene so assuming they decided it wasn’t for them but surely you know what you’re getting into going to see a film in this franchise?

I reckon some people just go to movies without knowing a single thing about it. Like 3 old couples walked out of Babygirl when I saw that, and it was very early in to the movie too.

I don't like to do a ton of research before I go to a flick (I'm too tempted to look up spoilers) but at least know the genre you silly gooses.

My in-laws unknowingly went to see Sausage Party

Probably the funniest thing to ever happen

I went and saw "Honey, Don't!" with my dad and kinda wanted to walk out when
there were several very ****ing accurate lesbian sex scenes
but I toughed it out because I am not a quitter!!!

I didn't mean to sound condescending when I said that so I do apologise - what I meant is that I think those of us who are discussing films are people who love film, and given that I think the issues I raised should be aware of them and concerned about them. I'm not saying if you're unconcerned about them you don't love film.

There was a pretty compelling and famous article a while ago now about the death of mid-budget cinema (found it. Worth a read!). From 2014, it defines midbudget as $5 million to $60 million, so with inflation I'd say that's probably up to around $80 million. Either way, one swallow doesn't make a summer.

A certain genre of mid budget is getting made less and less but I personally don’t think it’s impacting the quality, not a stack of those films are or were in the discussion regarding counting “great films being counted on one hand”.

I will say I think the cancellation of Harvey Weinstein and his odious presence in independent Hollywood has been a good thing. You look at the Oscars the past few years and I think there's been a general move in the right direction since he shuffled off the scene in 2017 - for 20 years his idea of a quality movie became the archetypal Oscar nominee, and we got winners like The King's Speech and nominees like The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game. Those movies still exist, my 73 year old boss always tells me about seeing them, but they're not being pushed as the hype movies of the year anymore.

I'll quickly say I don't think the issue is they don't fund any good stuff, the issue is that the film and TV industry is now controlled by only four major companies. While Hollywood's always sought to make a profit, someone like Jack Warner still loved movies - now those running the show are colossal conglomerates, asset management companies, and private equity firms.

So while I agree that MCU isn't ruining film, I do think it's symptomatic of something really bad.

Anyway, I know this is the "What's the last movie you watched" thread and people have moved on, but I thought I should expand a little.

When I saw Anora and it opened in the strip club, a mother and her barely teenage daughter immediately stood up and walked out. Like didn't last a minute lol.

I distinctly remember a few families in a screening of Ted with young kids.

They didn’t last long.
i saw a free advanced screening of Bad Santa

the cinema stuff got up on the microphone before it started and said

this is not a kids movie, the fbomb is dropped over 100 times in this movie and it is rated MA

a bunch of families got up and left

attack of the crab monsters. adorable.

Sometimes seeing a movie without prior knowledge can be great

Went to see a Batman movie years ago but was sold out, the next movie start time was Shawshank Redemption

I prefer to know as little as possible before going in

I don't watch trailers or read reviews, just pick stuff I think looks interesting or someone else wants to see

Wrath of Man - not a movie I’d normally watch. Ritchie/Statham is a tad boring. Anyway gave it a go. And yep was same rubbish. Convoluted plot, cardboard characters. 2/10

The range of Statham is something else. From sad to happy to serious to charming ..all these faces

Or as my sister would say - “Stathanam is a fantastic actor.”

Can't believe best train films were discussed and The Train wasn't mentioned.

La Haine (1995) -

The excellently titled Hate focuses on 3 adolescents in the aftermath of a French riot (something the French are gold medalists in). Apparently this was a landmark film in creating a pathway for grittier stories focusing on lower class people. Glad it exists. 7.5/10.

People We Meet On Vacation (2026, Netflix) -

Two friends go on holiday together every Summer. For the record I didn't pick this, it's the worst film I've seen in some time. Had a ball tearing it to shreds though (e.g. if you're by yourself and lost your clothes on the beach at night you're sure as shit aren't going to just stand still like a statue covering your junk, just direct the lead from the waist up ffs) with my preggers friend and her partner.

The lead actors are so ****ing bland but have nothing to work with either as the script and direction doesn't contain a hint of an original idea or subversion and are appalling in quality. 1/10 quality-wise but a 9/10 experience. I'm guessing this is the type of film that causes so much angst towards Netflix.

I like some chick lit adaptations (Bridget Jones' Diary, Devil Wears Prada, Crazy Rich Asians etc) but this ain't it.

Ooh, I would give La Haine an 8. Remember being stunned when I saw it back in the 90s.

How many superhero movies were there in 2025? Superman, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts. I think thats it.

This whole "theres no good movies anymore" is so overstated and tired, especially when its coupled with "ITS ALL JUST SUPERHERO SHIT".

Go watch some streamers, they are cranking out smaller indie projects, check out Kino and independent theatres or even just enjoy the mainstream fare that gets Oscar buzz (OBAA and Sinner are FANTASTIC films).

The nostalgia haze we all have for the better time in cinema is borderline ridiculous.
How could you forget
Captain America:Brave New World?? Wait, what was I saying again🤭
