Hi Joe,

How high tech is the list management software? Do you have penciled in salary cap space for existing players to hopefully extend such that you know roughly how much you have available for the next five years, or do you sign the big name players fill in the gaps with whatever is left over?
It’s a really intricate and detailed process that we follow with our list management committee, which involves members of our Club's finance committee and also data analytics within our football department. Every decision is made meticulously in understanding future flow-on effects and industry based data to give us a perspective of what's fair for our players and something that we want to continue to invest in, not only in our list management strategy, but the strategy across the football department.

Hi Joe,

Given the crushingly finite number of hours in a week, and limited resources available - how does the football department weigh the balance between continued work on the basics/fundamentals, vs time and energy spent looking for that 0.1% edge that can be the difference in the upper echelon of a professional competition? And has that weighting changed as the team build has progressed?
It's something that you want to look at each year in terms of the demographic of your list and where you need to prioritise time. You've obviously got developing players in their first, second and third years. The focus there is around the fundamentals, craft, their off-field, the mental game, even technique in the gym.

As you transition to the players that are building through the middle of their career, the fundamentals move more to a focus on their role-based strengths and how we can continue to hone them at AFL level, to elevate both their football performance but also elevate their understanding of their future potential and how we can grow their ceiling.

When you're working with your older players, it's probably more about how they can continue to add value, whether they're mentoring players that are younger on the list, or whether those older players can support the direction, whether that be through our game plan, our leadership across the program, or the structure of our program.

Geoff Valentine leads that with our individual development plans that set out what players look to focus on in all those fundamentals that you mentioned.

Hey Joe ,we know your busy man ,so much appreciated letting us take up some of your time with these questions

Firstly , if you could invite 6 guests to dinner who would they be and why?

And secondly pineapple on pizza …yes 👍 or no 👎?

Again ,thanks for your valuable time.
This will have to be my final answer as I'm about to run to a full afternoon of meetings. I can't come up with six guests to have for dinner right now on the spot but I have to say this. Pineapple on pizza, that's a no big no.

Thank you for all of your questions! Looking forward to a big year ahead. Go Freo 💜

Hey all! Brett here. Thanks so much for all of your questions. We got to as many as we could but I'm sure you can guess how busy JB is on any given day!

I'll be back with a Corey Wagner Q&A some point soon, which I'll be in touch with Tonga Bob about.

Thank you!
Please pass on our most sincerest of thank yous to Joe for taking the time to answer our questions! It was great to read his insights into how a footy department works, as well as about him as a person. He is now officially a Friend of the BigFooty Freo board!

And Brett you're an absolute superstar (and are already a Friend of the Board)! Thanks again for facilitating both this and the upcoming Q&A with Corey, and for everything you do in the social media world. Until the next one...

I like how in classic BigFooty form we wasted our last question on a pizza topping query.
