Autopsy Saints v Dees

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Last week was the highest home and away crowd ever.

Today was the highest crowd against Melbourne since 2017.

The fans have turned out.
And that'll be the last crowd record we break for 2026.

A lot of Saints fans had optimism to begin 2026. That optimism is absolutely dead and buried now. All the fair weather supporters will go back into hibernation until 2027. Looking forward to less than 18K at Marvel against Brisbane in a few weeks.

32 shots on goal ... 32 shots on goal .... 32 shots in goal ..... think of the positive ... think of the positive ..... 32 shots on goal ... 32 shots on goal .... 32 shots in goal ..... think of the positive ... think of the positive
7 goals from two mids - when was the last time we could say that

If we reach the (middle year) bye and things haven't improved.

Giants, Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Regular Adelaide, West Coast, Carlton, Gold Coast, Richmond, Dockers, Hawthorn, Swans, Giants, Western Bulldogs

We will know exactly where the team is at when our Bye comes in round 16.
Of coarse we will improve in the later part of the year, when its too late & the pressure is off.
We played like GCS did in the praccie game.
But, GCS were just using that to get fit & ready for the season proper, obviously.

I’d rather fall short of raised expectations than go back to being a team with literally no expectations, that no one cares about, respects or pays literally any attention to.

Yep and every head line will continue with how much we are paying the few and how it hasnt worked! Regardless of who you are, if you talk the talk youve got to walk the walk and we are failing at every opportunity.

Collingwood played in a prelim last year?

And 'worst brand of football imaginable' feels like a strong contender for most reactionary statement of the week.
Soft, lazy, sloppy, disorganised. Yes, absolutely the worst version of ourselves we could possibly roll out.

This list is capable of so much better, but when you can't even be faarked laying a tackle don't expect people to rock up.

No prizes for claiming Sharman has lost confidence, but like St Kilda, I’m out of options.

If that is our best side, I have to ask, as we used to ask on that other forum, about 2/3 of the way through the season , ‘Has North Melbourne gone past St Kilda?’
Sharman is really clever & assists team-mates still, but yeah, cant take a mark to save himself atm.

Yeah, this is what I mean by 0-2 feels like 0-5. We really needed early wins to keep the enthusiasm going, or at least simmering.

It's just completely dead now. New membership sign-ups won't keep climbing as high as hoped.

It's a disaster. On and off the field.

it already is over
It's a year of exploration...for the coaches and board.
Please, for the love of God, play Viking forward. At least we can see if he is naturally inclined to it.
I was against this...but jesus, we need something up there. A kid leaping and flying around the place will at least look like there's a pulse in the front half.

Long way to go in the season. I’m not going to worry about ladder position. Just want us to play with more skill and poise.

We are working on a fast frenetic style. Just it ain’t working out at the moment. Just tidying up a few skill errors would go a long way to improvement.

I’m not sure how we fix those problems. We seemed to go well in the two wet slippery games in preseason. And now in perfect conditions it has pretty much fallen to pieces. Hard to fathom why.

Only way is up!
Or nowhere 😳

I thought Tauru in the last quarter was a positive. Started clunking marks and put on pressure with his run downs and tackling .

Hugo the other positive, was excellent at the coal face.

I actually didn't mind Flanders, thought he was useful around the contest, found space and is a handy player.

Its wild how out of form Sharman is. Looks completely bereft of confidence and was a complete liability.

We need to go back to basics and that means tackling and pressure.

Melbourne's forwards were always going to be a worry. Even with Max in the side we look thin. Marshall needs to find some form. Keeler did some ok things but he just doesn't stay in the contest for long enough. Owens is handy but still so all over the shop. But what's the long term plan? We are going to need another tall target even if Max recovers. Honestly Mihocek would have been a handy pick up for us.

Alarm bells are ringing for Hammer at full back. Completely exposed today.

Our composure in front of goal was awful especially in the last quarter.

Scary thing for me is it doesn't seem obvious how we improve. Looking like a very long season.
I'm still not that worried about Hammer. Not yet. Why either he, Silvagni, or Tarau wasn't moved forward is just bewildering to me...but that's by the by.
He needed help upfield, and from his other defenders, but we were too heavy back there. He got a valuable lesson today from a guy getting very good looks and service.

Hopefully the coaches also learnt a lesson.

Looks like Lyon is trying to impose a game plan on the group and it's not working. Too many players look lost when they have the ball. Never seen so many players struggling with basic football- there is a group yips going on, and it's coming from the coaching.
Or they're just not very good at footy playing.
Skin folds and endurance running i'm sure are mighty though.

Is there a team in professional sports, anywhere in the world, with a greater capacity to disappoint its fans?
We are now staring down the barrel of another failed season. 0 and 2, with GWS away, Brisbane off a bye and back to back away games in Adelaide to come. Barring a massive turn around in form, that's zero wins from 6 games. And we are not a team like Geelong or Brisbane or Collingwood, with experience and composure to turn a poor start around.
So through a combination of our own poor efforts and a tricky fixture to start the season (thanks AFL), and for the second year in a row, the season is pretty much f*cked before its had a chance to get started and before we have even had a chance to play an actual home game on our actual home ground ( I know we asked for R0).

Yes there is. I must be a sadist as I support the Cleveland Browns as well. At least I’m not getting up at 2 am to be disappointed by the Saints 🤣

Just reflecting on this game....

it hurts.

Unlike some people here, I don't think we were terrible. Mediocre? yes. Terrible? No.

It was the first time since round 3 last year that we cracked 100. You gotta take some positives.

But it hurts- We're 0-2 but it feels like 0-5.

The excitement was palpable this year. I don't think anyone truly believed we'd be top 4 (except in the "absolutely everything goes right and it's possible" type sense). But we expected significant improvement.

Last week was the highest home and away crowd ever.

Today was the highest crowd against Melbourne since 2017.

The fans have turned out.

And now we're staring down the barrel of the first 0-3 start since 1996.

There's elements to what we're doing that are a definite improvement, it's just that I want to rip my eyes out watching us do it.

The Viking is another Dodgem Car at Luna Park. Hammer, Viking..bash.

Hammer does good stuff each and every week I bag him. I love how he keeps contesting, and spoiling. I think I can see why Ross loves him.and I’ve noticed he’s got fast hands for a tall guy.

Even the Viking did well at times today. Took a sold grab or two.

I’d be worried about my other whipping boy Phillipou. Are you still believing? I mean, a good B+ is still possible, maybe. A ‘better-Billings’ .

We missed Ronnie Byrnes. I suddenly love Byrnes.

agreed, he was going in last week - hence my suggestion he might have been short on confidence, rather than flat out unwillingly soft. But either way, he's gotta commit unconditionally and didn't look that way from the stands today
Playing a bit underdone from last week I reckon.

How many exploration years are there gonna be? wasn't ross' first year back the exploration year.

Next year the excuse will be Nas is out of contract and wanting to go home which has disrupted the playing group

Hall then space today
Even Hill, Sincs & Wilkes made awful decisions & nervy kicks.
Not like Melbourne were applying huge pressure.
We just percieved it.

I'm not as big on Phillipou as others are on here. I'm not sure what to make of him, and to be honest I don't think the coaches know either. I think he's a forward...but he has a long way to go. He has moments, and shows the odd glimpse here and there...but he just seems out of his depth a lot of the time.
I get that they want to give him games, but I think it's about trying to figure him out as a player, and seeing where he fits and where to put him, and what he's good at consistently...as much as it is giving him "experience."
Right now, I'd be putting and fitting him into the VFL.
They need help too 😅
