Happened at least three times today and each time it led to a Port shot on goal.

Spacial awareness definitely isnt his strong suit.

Played a pretty great game for a CHB. Kicked well. The great goal and numerous get of jail intercept marks.

An awesome start to the year.


I just wish the coaches - knowing that Comben is like a staffy chasing a bone out on field - would direct defenders to use their awareness, if Chom cannot. There were a couple of dicey situations that we were lucky did not result in injury because our defenders try to kill each other out there.

Some genuinely good one on one contested marks today, and some nice play running off his man. Not much opposition in Ollie Lord and a young Whitlock though.

Some howlers though… crashing into teammates and not playing the %’s when kicking. Sometimes just has to tone it back and keep it very simple.

Hopefully the brain fades will becomes less frequent once he gets more experience and belief in his abilities.

They did a video earlier in the week about the goal songs. Comben, Logue, and Pink all picked that weird folk music-y with the flutes and whistles from Borat. Logue said they allowed Sheezel to have it as his goal song as well so it might actually get played through the year. You can see Logue doing the Borat dance as he runs up to Comben after the goal. I reckon youd have been able to pick your odds for Comben being the first to get that song played over Marvel's PA system

i know he is a see ball get ball kinda player but really needs to discover some spacial awareness otherwise we are going to have injuries to both himself and others. cant question his endeavour and courage though,

Back on Comben - whilst you can refine aspects of player's games, I think you take the good with the bad. And Charlie's good far outweighs his bad.

For a bloke who has frequent flyer lounge access at The Alfred, he still approaches EVERY contest like it's the last minute of a tight grand final.

He's flushed in the face and throwing his body at everything that comes near him. Awesome stuff.

He makes mistakes but he has a) talent and b) extreme passion.

Keep him on the park (hit the magical 50 as Dinkers) noted and see where he takes us.

50 games in, probably 35-40 as a defender? Probably played mostly forward in juniors? His career as a backman is still in its infancy. Let’s see what we have by the end of the season.

the discussion shouldnt be about whether he will make it or not, but whether he will be a superstar or just a very good player.

barring injury of course. i still wince every time he lands.

posted this about a year ago. its interesting to see how wildly varying the assessments of his first game have been. i swear i saw posters dropping him in the logue thread.

i thought he was amazing. havent seen one of our defenders dominate a game like that since thompson on cloke that time.

spoiling his teammates will be an easy fix. they just need more time to build chemistry back there. actually its the team mates who will learn to get out of his way and let him clunk them.
