Fair enough, maybe he repeated a school year? All his junior footy was played for his school wasn't it?
No you are right, I'm sorry about that. In the 2020 draft on Wikipedia for some reason it comes up with the 2021 rookie draft as well. I am not sure why they are linked. He was taken November 2021 after his year 12 school year at Carey Baptist I think.

Phillipou has potential but the fact he's getting a million this year as an inconsistent 21 year old tells you their capbis empty

Kind of proves my point. They struggled to make the cap

I do agree with you both, but it also doesn’t suggest all their recruits are heavily front ended.
I suppose it’s just the way you want to interpret it.
He signed the extension prior to them coming

Part of the reason we couldnt get Marshall done. St Kilda had soaked up all his contract by front loading massively and wanted to be rewarded for absorbing it.

At the end of the day though, if they draft well those results will come no matter what. Using top 10 picks on Clark, Coffield, Phillipou, Travaglia etc is the main problem for mine.
I kind-of disagree with this, player development is absolutely half the battle here. Those players weren't exactly controversial picks at the time.

That said, I cannot believe that Hunter Clark is 26 and Coffield is 25. What a waste. Too early to say on Phillipou and Travaglia IMO.

I can't speak specifically to the Marshall situation, but front-loading contracts isn't always an altruistic move from a club. Just conjecture, but front-loading his contract probably helped them hit the minimum cap a few years ago when their list wasn't exactly star-studded and the drop in salary would've helped the spending spree last year.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it was still their choice to retain or trade Marshall, so not worried about that part. But pointing out that front-loads are as much a club move as it is for the player's best interest. Imagine if the Dees had been able to front-load Oliver's contract - though obviously tricky with Petracca, Gawn etc.

Yeah as disappointing as Clark has been, the alternatives don't do anything to wet the appetite.

Hollands wouldn't get a game for us with his ball use/position, and Phillipou is a middling player at best that gets by on potential. That charmed treatment will run out pretty soon if it's not capitalised on.

Ginbey is a fine player, and a clear upgrade over Clark, but I can't say I'm losing sleep over not using our top 10 pick on the second coming of Jake Kolodjashnij. He'd be handy, but he's not one where you look back in haste that you passed him up.

Weddle stings a bit, but he was clearly never on anyone's radar in the top 10. He might as well have been a pick in the 40s from where we were selecting, a bit like Warner in '19.
Phillipou was the one I wanted and when I've questioned Clarks selection, have stated we should've drafted phillipou. I'd still take phillipou but I'm losing confidence and more accepting of the decision to take Clark.

Phillipou was bottom age, I thought he had so much more improvement to the rest of the top 10. The knock on him was his character, but I thought he just seemed a bit young and cocky and hoped it meant he was confident and competitive. I'm starting to question the competitive part and rumours continue that his teammates don't like him that much.

While I do agree with what you have said, I think Clark looks like he has stepped up a level this year. I have loved his tenacity and seems to of gained a bit of speed off the mark. He could be a decent player and I was a big doubter before late last year.

Yep. Exactly. While people might not agree with there decisions at the trade table they have gone hard to make cap space available for the players they want.

I can see why they have done what they have done. It just wont get them a flag imo and their members will be disappointed.

There's a few online courses focusing on sunk cost fallacy for investors that they could really enrol in and get something out of

Planning for life after Cameron

Here's a good debate:

Would you rather Ben King for nothing but salary?

Or Zak Butters, but we have to pay a fortune in picks/players, on top of the huge contract?

My mind went to Butters in a heartbeat, but the longer you think about it, the tougher it gets IMO.

Butters is exactly the type of mid we need right now, but I think we might need another quality key forward more in 18 months time.

Some would say mids are ‘easier’ to get, and a number are coming out of contract in next couple of years. By comparison, not many key forwards coming up.

Plan A and Plan B might simply be determined by who is viewed as more gettable.

I think if Clark was going to be an elite mid, then he would have shown that already. But he is making incremental improvement, is tough in the contest, so if he can have an Atkins like career for 250 games, then I’d take it now.
