Picked it up on my way to work this morning, will see how it goes. Sounds like you just need to spend a bit of time working things out.

A lot of divisive comments and no-one has even played it yet, FFS.

Yeah this seems to be what I am getting, it's going to take 10ish hours to get into the groove, not even sure that's outside of the norm for RPGs anyway.

No. But being able to get used to a backwards ass control scheme doesn't mean its not a pain.
true. It would be nice if the game was absolutely perfect but sounds like it isn't.

Oh well. I'm still rolling the dice on it but can understand if others don't

Luke Stephens also said that when he'd report a bug on their Discord, depending on the severity, it was fixed sometimes in 30 minutes. That gives me faith that many of the things like broken quests will be fixed sooner rather than later. ACG also gave the same praise but for exactly the same reasons said to also wait for these things to be fixed. I don't think there is a wrong answer and will be up to the individual. Personally I can't wait either. Reading the sheer extreme differences in reviews across the net made me remember playing Lego as a kid. I had a massive chest of Lego and had some friends who would happily play for hours just making whatever we could think up. Meanwhile I had some other friends that wouldn't build anything outside of instructions then got bored. No way is wrong, everyone is different. I come from MMOs. The more I see complaints about games that are grindy or are complex the more I get a stiffy.

'Journalists who have to play heaps in a short time span naturally won't like this' says man who has played heaps in a short time span.

He played 70 hours and learned controls, most of the game complaints come from journalists who don't learn the controls.

Citation needed. The videos I've watched the control scheme looks a bit archaic and very much MMO turned singleplayer. It outwardly appears to be an extremely valid complaint.

I'm sorry, but as someone who runs an outlet that gets early access to games, this is one of the dumbest and close-minded things I've read. Just because someone you like/follow posts a positive opinion, it doesn't mean the person who didn't enjoy it is wrong. Too many Gamers who "don't trust reviews" or think "journalists can't play games" when the opinion doesn't align with what they were hoping for.

The overwhelming interpretation of reviews I've seen are ambitious game but with control flaws.

Some of the grinding criticisms seem not dissimilar to souls like games. While it's the more accessible title I understand and the only one I've played....as a self confessed scrub, Elden Ring was one of my favorites experiences of the last 20 years.

Don't think those that are hyped should have an issue with those who want to hold off, and certainly those who want to off shouldn't have an issue with those that are happy to jump in with eyes wide open. Seems like there is still plenty of meat on the bone to have a good time and jump in now.

Not sure I follow this one? I've played every From game and probably spent maybe 2 hours grinding across the whole series, it's really not required. This seems like a very different kind of grind, much more akin to an MMO.

So far so good but didn’t expect to need frame gen to get above 60 consistently on the new card. Controls are also floaty, and counterintuitively increasing mouse acceleration reduces the floaty-ness. Theres a lack of rebinding too but that hasn’t caused an issue yet.

Otherwise having a good time and the world looks beautiful (though the shadows make some locations hard to see whats in a corner).

Runes to level up and materials for sleeping pots. Got up to Godskin Duo before having a break which I haven't (but want to) return to. Admittedly bee-lining the main quest. Obviously stuffed up a few times with dropped runes.

Maybe we have different interpretations of what grinding is.

I don't follow reviewers or "game journalists", they serve no purpose in my opinion especially in Australia where we can return games.

I think we do - to me, grinding is stuff that takes you away from doing the meaningful quest/content. Busy work. The more insidious grinding is that which is mandatory to meaningfully proceed in a game.

Levelling up in From games is part of the main gameplay loop and doesn't require repetitious activities or replaying the same content over and over again.

Ok. Yet you still felt the need to put this out there.

Yeah for me level up and progress, I'm certainly having to re-do lower level areas I've already done.

Yeah I ended up stopping/skipping chunks of reviews as with a game like this you don't want to know too much.

Last review when I stopped altogether was an Aussie constantly whinging about "im going to a lot of comments about git gud".

Miss the feeling of leaving Los Santos for the first time in GTA San Andreas, or arriving in Mexico in RDR.

Acknowledge that it's probably going to have some paint points and not perfect but happy to deal with those. Also get why people don't want to jump in first.

You only get to experience a game for the first time once. There is way too much info today and it's not like the pre-internet days when we relied on gaming journos just to feed us some crumbs in a column of a magazine. People are getting riled up both ways like it's tribal and siding with their preferred reviewer over a game they haven't even played and by the time everyone consumes all the reviews and videos and stuff to make an "informed decision" they may as well just have played the game as nothing will be new. I'm with Dez above. Not that I don't see a point in reviewers or journos anymore but I don't think they hold anywhere near the weight they used to. I can't wait to get home and boot it up. What's the worst that can happen? It's shit and I get a refund? 🤷‍♂️
