The issue we may face over the next few years in acquiring free agents is the same reason clubs like Essendon, Collingwood ect will have difficulties drafting top talent

Tasmania.
Whatever money we will be able to table even if it’s substantial will still be blown out of the water by what Tassie can pay

Until we have actually picked ourselves up off the canvas and made inroads into climbing up the ladder again I can’t see us being a legitimate option for these players

Sure we will have a crack and probably force the other suitors like the Hawks to pay more but as to being a legitimate option, we are no chance

Even Hawthorn wasn’t chasing the big fish like they are now until they had been showing results on field like now before that they just had to play it smart and go after that next rung down like Chol
We need to be looking at the GC Suns players as well as GWS for 'return Home kids'
Thats where the talent lies on their list that either cant get games or home sick.
these kids wont want to go to tassie and will be looking at playing games

Humphrey is the same type as Lalor, except quicker.

He can play mid, forward anywhere. Him and Lalor together would be frightening.

Humphrey would be a great get for anyone. But what do you think he Suns would want for a contracted Humphrey? What if they asked for our first two picks at this draft for Humphrey, and those picks were say 2 and 22?

The Suns had their chance to trade him last year, they did not even contemplate it.

He would still pick hawthorn and get there.

Balta & 22
For Humphrey.
Pick 2 & B Bear.
Delicious

How are Hawks/Pies/any competitive team going to raise the draft capital? hey would have to unload players of value.
well somehow they do don't they? don't start me on pies and geesook and lesser extend the hawks!

Pick 2 and 22. Done deal. Get their 2nd rounder back tho. But I doubt he would want to come to us atm.

He is exactly what you'd want at pick 2 which will become pick 4 anyway. Former top 6 pick who has delivered on his potential.

Humphrey would no doubt be worth that and would be a perfect age for Richmond. Whether we would want to spend big on him in draft picks and salary when we have Lalor, Hotton in particular and maybe Cumming and Smillie who can play similar roles, I am less sure.

Then as you say, he may prefer other Melbourne clubs.

I love Humphrey as a player. But they have a serious surplus of super talented young players the Suns, probably apart from young defenders. I would almost be inclined to sit tight for a couple of years, leave the other Melbourne clubs to commit massive deals to the likes of Ben King and Humphrey, and really get to work on players like Will Graham, and this last lot of 5 they have just drafted. They are going to end up with very talented players they simply cannot fit into their team. Hardwick and other contacts will give us the heads up on the ones to avoid.

TIGER’S TIME ENDING?

Richmond’s loyal defender Nathan Broad is in no hurry to sign a new deal as he eyes his future and even potentially calling an end to his Tigers career at year’s end.

Broad turns 33 in April after showing the ultimate loyalty in knocking back a lucrative Roos deal at the end of the Richmond premiership era to sign a two-year deal at Punt Road.

But there is a chance he might venture home to WA at year’s end, as Richmond also transitions to young talls like Luke Trainor, Josh Gibcus and Tom Brown.

It would pose the question whether West Coast might look at him for a single season given his continued outstanding form and leadership.

Seems about right for him to hand over the baton
Wouldn’t begrudge him either way in terms of retirement or just topping up elsewhere

Has done the hard yards for us and been a fantastic mentor especially over the last handful of seasons

He’s playing like he should have retired 6mths ago . Didn’t get a p in first Q last round

The guy I would be looking at is Jack ough. Loved him in his draft year and is developing well at VFL this year stringing some great numbers.

Would walk into our midfield tomorrow

Yep. I think the problem we had on the weekend is that we just didn’t have young guys fit to replace the senior ones.

Once Cumming, Hotton, Smillie are fit we need to put them straight in and not look back.

Hopper should stay in on the proviso the other two-five mids in rotation at the centre bounces are all younger - Lalor, Smillie, Cumming, Kmac, Hotton. If there are 75 CBAs to share amongst these Hopper should get 10 and the other four 16.

Taranto to half forward playing the Lambert role he does so well.

Prestia out of the side. He can play out of the centre unlike Hopper but he’s in his last year so should make way. I’d prefer him to Hopper but don’t think it will happen. Honestly I think both will frustratingly stay in the side.

Trainor in permanently for Broad. Just let him play. Again this won’t happen.

Grjl plays off a wing. Kmac moves more on ball. Lalor and Hotton play forward of centre.

Retchenko or Burton to run the dead wing. I don’t care who at this stage. Hugo out. This won’t happen.

Alger for Green.
Faull, Armstrong and Faucett to play three talls.

Lefau goes out of the side once Sims is fit.

OHB is a break glass in case of emergency type. It’s time for him to play. Give him 3 weeks to show if he’s got anything then once Samson is fit bring him in to do the same.

Trezise needs to have a clearly defined role. Could he be a tagger? If not I’m not sure what he is.

Sonsie needs a 5 game stint in the middle to show if he’s has a future then make a call.

Gibcus must come in when he’s ready.

My team for this week…

Short Miller Vlastuin
Banks Balta Brown
Retchenko Kmac Grjl
Taranto Faull Campbell
Faucett Armstrong Alger
OHB. Lalor Hopper

Rioli Trainor Lefau Prestia Sonsie

In: Trainor, OHB, Alger, Retchenko, Kmac.

Out: Broad, Nankervis, Green, HRS, Trezise.
Bit late to this but you didn't drop Lynch (in your in/out) who is clearly out... You did brink in Faull though.

The rest I like even if it didn't happen. These guys will get game time though over the next few weeks (not yet sure OHB will, Ryan might get first crack vs Port not that I necessarily agree with it).

Think slightly shorter/longer term, it might be Lefau that takes Lynch's role, even though I hope it's Fawcett.

Almost need to make wildcard round before FA consider us...

Also need AFL to ban FA from joining top 4 or top 6 clubs (which should be a rule already).

GWS won't be able to retain BOTH Briggs and Madden.
Briggs is ageing now, 27 this year.
Madden's current value is $550K.
Would offer $700K for six years.

Surely we shouldn't be offering him a new deal. At some point we are going to have to move past the oldies and start getting games into young players. If we are staggering the retirements Broad and Prestia must be done at the end of this year.

We need to start getting games into kids before we worry about FA.

If you want to ban teams from FA, it should be done on premierships, not top 4s or top 6. Ban teams who have won a flag over the last 5 years rather than a team that finishes 6th. Why shouldn't a team like Adelaide be able to get better when they havent won anything? Also with either option we couldnt have gotten Lynch and would only have won 1 flag.

Maybe so, but when you have a heap of youth, you’ve gotta keep some leadership. Whether he retires or does a year or two at West Coast, that’s fine with me. He’s been a fantastic player.
