Coach Carlton under Voss

There is a soft salary cap on the football department these days. They can only increase it so much until they have to start paying a "tax" for every dollar they spend which would go other clubs.

I forgot how much that "tax" is exactly. I think it was 50%, but it might have increased.

Carlton are rich enough they have the Visy cheque book

Don't worry, the club can do no wrong apparently.

Then when we completely fail at building a winning list, it apparently was obvious all along and we should all just pretend the likes of Silvagni, Voss etc weren't talked up as Jesus like Messiah figures here to revive Carlton.

Every one of our young draftees over the last decade was going to be a gun until they weren't.

Getting complete de javu hearing some of our fans talking up some seriously mediocre young talent like we're onto a winning formula again.

It's what they do.

Seems the Carlton fans more in tune with what makes a decent player and not deluded by what we have are on other platforms.

Ollie Florent was on the outer for one year under Dean Cox when the Swans missed finals. And by the way he still played 16 games in 2025. But under Longmire when Sydney were one of the best transition sides in the AFL he played 130 games in a row. Has already provided a heap of overlap run and good distribution (with composure) early in his Carlton career. And then Ben Ainsworth the "mediocre" player that played every game for the Suns? And a high HF who fades in and out of games? That is literally the role unless you are the absolute elite. It is one of the hardest roles to play in the game.

And on your last point I think Graham Wright saying on radio pre-game that Voss will not be judged on wins and losses says everything about where the club thinks they are.

You do get that some players perform well in good teams with good structures and when you remove those elements they can very easily become run of the mill average players?

As the old saying goes, it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're flying with turkeys.

Will mutually part ways with 3-4 rounds left in the season and be replaced with Horse or Skipworth in 2027 is my guess. Clearly not up to it.

Yes of course but still too early to tell if that is the case with our recruits. It is odd though to me that posters who believe Carlton are a bad team think recruiting players that were playing regularly for good teams and fill list needs could possibly be anything other than a positive.

Hayward is a great player, but in our current system I doubt we get the best out of him.

The other two "bigger names", their clubs were only too happy to move them on.

Don't think anyone has stated that Florent, Hayward or Ainsworth are big names as individuals. I think they are good players from good clubs that fill critical list needs.

On Florent and Ainsworth specifically and the belief that their clubs were happy to move them on. Ainsworth was moved on because the Suns were bringing in Petracca and had a wealth of academy players that needed game time. They shed some salary to help with Petracca and open up spots for someone like Lombard or Rogers to start developing in the team. Ainsworth is 28 and is probably not going to get significantly better than what he is right now so it makes sense for them given their acquisitions. However, again when healthy he played every game for a pretty good Suns team. Carlton have been screaming out for a high HF that can use the ball inside 50 and actually has some sort of pace. Ainsworth fits the bill.

With Florent he signed a five-year extension in 2024 with the Swans so clearly they saw him as an important part of the team in that year under Longmire. Likely due to him playing 130 games in a row under him. Longmire is IMO the best coach in recent history in the AFL and he had his side playing some of the best transition football in the comp - something Carlton need to get better at. He still played 16 games under Cox in 2025 but yes was closer to the outer of the best 23 than he had been previously. Again, fills a very clear list need with his ability to provide overlap run and distribute from HB. We get him for a 3rd round pick - how anyone can see this as anything other than a positive is beyond me.

A team willing to do a trade for a player does not mean they don't rate that player. In many instances it's because they have another younger player in the wings they want to develop in the team or an acquisition via trade/free agency that fills a similar role or potentially due to their salary cap. People using this to indicate that a player isn't going to be good at a new club makes little sense.

Absolutely, they handy players that can fill a need, very good pickups from a list calibration perspective

Carlton have been really poor so far in 2026, there really aren’t any more excuses for Voss and the team isn’t as bad as the last two seasons of results have shown

A 10 goal turnaround against a side that’s unlikely to play finals

This after the 80 pt turnaround v the swans

It’s coaching, Voss must go

Honestly can't stand the bloke. Looks like he thinks quite highly of himself when you watch him closely.

Bizarre how so many past greats just keep getting a life line, earning stupendous amounts of money and achieving very little as coaches, assistants and club directors (aka Greg Williams despite struggling to remember family members names due to CTE) but I guess this is why "The Boys Club" will always be a term passed around in professional sports.

Its not just the coach

Carltons senior players go looking for the milk when the acid is applied
