Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn : Jack Ginnivan!

What a trade this has turned out to be, every part of this trade has worked out for us so far.

Collingwood got:
#33 - Jiath (pushed back to #37)
Haw's F2 - #38 - traded as part of the Houston deal (Port drafted Moraes)
Haw's F3 - #50 - West

Hawthorn got:
Ginnivan
#39 - traded as part of the package for Gunston
Coll's F2 - #35 - Mraz
Coll's F4 - traded as part of the package for D'Ambrosio

He’s the new Gunners being thrown behind the ball by Clarko to steady the ship. Thought he changed the game against the Swans a few weeks ago in the same manner.

He looks like a proper ball of muscle now and is so nifty with his footwork and skill execution.

It’s so great seeing our side develop further again with these sort of player progressions that other sides now need to put time into.

Surprised at the sycophantic praise from hawks fans here. I’d always held this forum with a bit more AFL IQ than the typical club forum, and if I was a Hawks fan I’d be super nervous the Hawks have inherited a liability here.

The rate Collingwood delicately shipped him speaks volumes.
Talking footy IQ

Well, this aged like milk.

The irony of talking about footy IQ and writing that lmao

This is what was lost in it all. He covered lots of arses with his saving of these goals, especially as the last man back in position
This is why I had him as my BOG. Some of his efforts in the backline were just outstanding.

The good thing with Ginni is that when he saves goals he also generates attack as he is so creative with ball in hand.

Reports someone stole Ginnivan's car supposedly a Nissan. Same make Nissan as the club sponsor so maybe a few players drive Nissans? Is Bevo the prime suspect given they play the Dogs this week lol

Is this true?
That's close to the best trade of all time LOL

May end up second behind the all time best. With thanks to Gemini:

Key Details of the 2001 Trade:
  • Fremantle Received: Trent Croad (222-gamer) and Luke McPharlin (solid defender).
  • Hawthorn Received: Pick 1 (Luke Hodge), Pick 20 (Daniel Elstone), and Pick 36 (Sam Mitchell).
  • Outcome: Hodge and Mitchell became key cornerstones for Hawthorn, winning four premierships each.
After two seasons, Croad asked for a trade back to Victoria to rejoin Hawthorn in 2003, having only served two years at the Dockers.

Hodge and Mitchell are legends, but we gave up good value to get them.
Took the risk and it paid off big time.

With this trade, we basically got 4 good players for nothing with Ginni, Gunston, Mass, and hopefully Mraz turns out to be a good KPD.

3x best 18 players
Promising KPD.

Nice article in todays Age by Caroline Wilson about Ginni.

"The remaking of Jack Ginnivan into the mould of the football club he grew up loving has not been without its visits back to the workshop. There have been setbacks and triumphs and no one in a leadership position at Hawthorn is brave enough to suggest there won’t be plenty more of both.

But as the 23-year-old prepared to fly into Adelaide Airport and run onto Adelaide Oval, which have both provided the backdrop for birds and aeroplanes among but a handful of his famous confrontations over his relatively short career, the inescapable conclusion is that Ginnivan has become an on-field success story. Off-field he might remain a risky prospect, but Jack Ginnivan the liability has not been spotted for more than a season." ...then rest of article

Reminds me a bit of another Hawthorn recruit from another club, Russell Greene. Russell ended up playing 180 or so games for Hawthorn and over 300+ AFL games. Not bad of Ginni can do that.

I thought he was an opportunistic brat going by the headlines.

He's a good player with a great mentality.
He will win us games and his energy will permeate through the team.
So far, so good.

Career best form without the free kicks too.

His quality became obvious to me very quickly, having previously not known much about him.

Not just a "bargain", he's been an excellent recruit, and a great player to have in finals.

It’s 12 months late as he was AA level after returning to the side last year, but I’m glad to see the change in recognition of Ginnivan’s talents. He’s an elite player.
The AFL media always makes me laugh at how slow they are to pick things up.

I remember when we were rolling with (post knee) Mitchell and JOM in the midfield and they kept saying how strong we were in the middle and acting surprised that Sam decided to trade them out and do a reset 🤣

And now they finally come around to the fact that Ginnivan is actually you know a seriously good player and not just a larrikin about 12 months after it was evident to anyone who watched the Hawks.

Of all the improvements I see in his game, it’s his willingness to put his body on the line that stands out to me. He always had a good defensive attitude but now he’s just imposing it a bit more on the field and that energy seems to be flowing into his offensive game as well. Big tick.
