Review R5: The GB&U vs Carlton: ARC de Triomphe

Good to get the win, but boy was that a poor standard game for most of it.

We had a great patch in the second quarter that won us the game. Dross outside of that

Luckily we were playing Carlton but we wouldn't have beaten too many other teams with that performance. Not seeing too much improvement compared to previous weeks when factoring in the opponent

Rachele was amazing in the first half

Got a bit spooky when we started fumbling opportunities in the fourth, but recomposed and got the job done. Goes without saying, that was a needed victory, especially after an utterly puss first quarter.

Berry gets a career game, good to see Rankine back to 90% TOG, Rachele keeps on with another big performance, Thilthorpe was wasteful, Tex looked good. We move on to next week.

The Good

Rachele
Rachele
Dawson
Keays

The Bad
Felt like we had players dip in and out of the game and for the weather thats probably ok
Smashed in that 1st quarter

The Ugly
The weather - glad I am home
Nicks stopping the game when we got 6 goal up

Good:
A win.
Rachele just wants it
ANB is such a savvy professional operator
Maley does what a forward should do, bashes, crashes, makes defenders flinch. Not the most polished but offers a lot for our smalls.

Bad:
Laird trying to kick it to the guys doing the roofwalk

Ugly:
This board vehemently predicted that an underdone Hinge was dangerous. Why could our shiny headed leader see the same?
Soligo needs a rest to sort out whatever it is that is hampering him.

Most importantly its a W. Just needed that.

Well done Rash, when we really needed a game breaker in the first half when it was a tussle he just stood up. Jet.

We had the game in control at HT. On a drier night that probably would've been a big win. I daresay some will read into it but thats just their character to do so.

Strange in the 4th it seems Nicks just loves going into his shell 8-10 mins out. Just can't shake that philosophy. Weird and has been costly. Against a better side it might have been again tonight.

Riley's goalkicking starting to be a bit of a concern.

Oh, and the Hinge selection was just baffling. Could've let him back the extra week (and a bit).

Every game this season has been the same. Play 15 minutes of good football and turn into a grind for the rest.

It worked against Collingwood and Carlton but it’s never going to be enough against the contenders.

Rushing Hinge back was a mistake.

Rachele incredible first half. Disappeared a bit in the second.

Rankine I thought was just ok but then saw 22 touches and 2 goals? Hopefully starting to find some form.

Glad to get the win, only a 7 out of 10 performance for us though, possibly our worst performance for the year really, despite the win.

29 Disposals to Berry in the end. Still a lot of fumbles, but should be good for his confidence.
Rankine starting to get better.
Poor start, least we corrected pretty quick, good until the last quarter, very poor offensively in the last quarter, so many bad decisions, started to play like it was dry again.
On reflection I think despite wanting to develop a short kicking in defense game in the offseason, none of our games have been amenable to it, tonight due to the conditions, the rest due to the pressure when the game was on.
Butts and Pedlar back this week, should start to put some pressure on for positions.
Would love to get a win next week, get back to an even ledger.

Good:
Rachele - great game and finished very well.
Umpiring - a rare good ride.
Berry - battles hard, not sure he is the answer but you can't question his endeavour.

Bad:
Laird - why is he in the team? We have 3 or 4 other players that could perform at his level or better.
Worrell - Not having the best year.

Ugly:
Nicks parking the bus in the 2nd half.
Nicks selecting Hinge, most of us could see what was going to happen
So many players down on form, how can 3/4 of our team be in a form slump at the same time, it's like they are coached by the same person.

Excellent
Rachele - dominant
Cook - elite hands in the wet
Dawson - found some form

Good
Berry - wet weather is his type of football
Milera - better when he isn't our only rebound player
Keays - destroyed Carlton in a brief period again
Nankervis - like what he brings with ball use and intercepts
Neal-Bullen - smart player
Umpires - they gave us everything
Ollie Hollands - played very well for us
Cerra - also did his absolute best to get us the win
Hinge doing more than Jones despite getting injured

Bad
Thilthorpe - 1.4 is a terrible return from those shots
Michalanney - stinker, hasn't found any form this year
Cumming - stinker, was he still unwell?
Soligo still seems unfit

Good

We finally pulled off our cunning plan to win a game by playing one good quarter.

Rachele great when early when the heat was on.

Milera good.

Cook very clean during the downpour.

Rankine worked his way into it. ANB solid. Peatling important in nullifying Carlton's early clearance dominance.

Dawson and Berry okay, but there's a pretty big caveat for our whole midfield group.

Nank pretty good, aside from that missed goal.

Keays back amongst the goals.

Bad

Tex with a few senior citizen moments. Needs to know his limitations.

Maley and McAndrew both have interesting goalkicking technique, but they can at least be trusted to kick over a jam tin and are thus preferable to ROB. Thilthorpe's goalkicking also subpar.

Laird plodding about.

Sog now has a dodgy ankle in addition to being underdone, but we'll still play him ahead of Dowling, Edwards, Draper etc.

Not a great night for some of our defenders. Max a bit off, Worrell too - though the midfield shellacking early didn't help.

Only beating the rabble by 5 goals.

Ugly

Rushing back Hinge for no reason and having him injure his hammy.

Clearance obliteration to start the game.

Going conservative in the last quarter.

The game was decided when Cripps started the second term on the bench.

We look like a team still in pre-season. So many players just don't have any touch about them.

Rachele our standout. Very Toby Greene like tonight.

Milera very solid once again.

Picking underdone players continues to hurt us.
