'Recognising that something is wrong' is a spectrum, not a binary.
There's recognising that something is wrong but backing the player to work through it (maybe with the help of some specific techniques, maybe because the player has been able to do so in similar situations in the past?).
There's recognising that the player isn't performing at a level that benefits the team and reducing their presence through rotations.
There's recognising that something is so drastically wrong that the player needs to be removed from the field ASAP.
And there's a whole lot of other territory at other parts of the spectrum.
Clearly the club got it wrong on this occasion. But things are not always as clear-cut as we might imagine.
