With the new father son rules that are soon to be applied, is there a world where clubs will work in tandem with their potential father sons to actively tank their draft years so that they can be recruited with more favourable picks in the draft?

I received a text late last night from a fellow Cats fan to advise that Ollie Wiltshire had been given a one year contract extension. Is this true?

Good on him - but gee that's an odd decision to make on a bloke that must have been dangerously close to being delisted at the end of last season. None of us probably appreciate the inner workings of list management and there might be other issues at play like his management getting approached by another club, but it does seem like a strange one.
His form this season more than justifies a one-year extension.

He has clearly improved since last year and is on a decent trajectory for someone who came into the system later than most.

He is exactly the type of player who should get a one-year extension. The stars and highly touted juniors get multi year deals. The duds get delisted. The average Joe’s with a chance to make it get 1 year deals to see what they can do without a big commitment.

Wiltshire is an average Joe with a chance to make it at Geelong.

It would astonish me if he got a deal any time before, really, the weeks before Trade Week, unless he really pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

His form at AFL level has been pretty meh - he doesn't get much of the footy, doesn't kick many goals, is hardly a tackling machine. He's the kind of player who gets a contract when you know how many list spots you want to keep open for Free Agents or draftees.

It's not inconceivable that he doesn't break back into the AFL team again this year, especially if Miers or Stengle returns sooner than expected. That would be curtains for a 23yo.

Almost zero. Playing dead = getting dropped in u18 year and not playing state carnivals = less development.

Any reason we didn’t throw a big offer at petracca given it seems unlikely butters is coming to us?? He is exactly what we needed this year
Probably because we didn't have anything like the trade currency, especially given we were chips-in on Marshall.

Petracca moved for 7, 8, 2026 R1, with some 20s going the other way. We didn't have anything like that.

I believe he has signed an extension in the last week

Wiltshire's 1yr extension was announced last week

I believe so.

If you can't cover the dvi in 2 picks then too bad
You can go into a draft deficit for the next year, so if we had a daicos level father son coming next season for example. We could try to trade up higher or to add an extra first round pick. But if that didn’t cover it then sacrifice pick(s) the following year.

Otherwise players rated below that we should be able to pick up with an existing draft pick we held or more easily move up the draft. But it will make it harder for clubs to take multiple high rated players.

Just a rumour I’ve heard, when pendles retires he’s $1.01 to be an assistant under Chris Scott.

how few goals can a player kick and still be regarded as a goal kicker
Will admit that upon reading the article I did go to footywire to double check how many goals he's kicked
