Well we have to end up with at least one if not more defenders. Imagine going into 2027 the same or worse than this year after failing to address it every year.
I agree but it needs to be a significant upgrade otherwise we're just treading water given any key defender in likely has Khamis out through free agency.

We continue to use that line, but it wouldn't take much to be better than what we have, or at least give us some good backup

Speaking to my player manager contact, sounds like the Dogs are turning over every rock possible to secure KPD coverage this off season as we aren't happy with what we have on the list.

Expect Buku and potentially Buss to leave if we land a target.
I have liked Buku as the 3rd tall this year, but geez it must be enticing to just sit back and see what Essendon offers him end of year. Could end up with a stupid amount of compo (easy Band 3, possibly hitting Band 2 territory given their history of overpaying)

Best case scenario for us I think is that Butters re-signs for 2 more years and we get him as an unrestricted free agent after that and pay nothing. Gives us a couple of years to build a list that can compete. Naughton 29, Richards 29, Zak Butters 28, Bontempelli 33 (will still be a great player), Tim English 31 will be a solid mature cohort who can win a flag. Then a middle bracket of Darcy 25, Freijah 23, Odonnel 26, Sellwood 25, Jaques 22. And because we didn't trade for Butters we could potentially finish off the list with a gun KPD like Weitering. We'll be in a great position to win a flag in 2029 if Butters can be patient.

Butters as a FA then throw the farm at Weitering, and El Souki in the draft. Yes please!

Port looking okay probably going to ruin that butters FA dream though

I can only assume that East Ringwood does not have a womens team or if they do they are prepared to cop a mass walk out.
Top of the ladder and dominating and have a thriving womens juniors AFAIK - not sure I’d be bring8ng him in but they did and it’s working for now

How come everyone is trading out Buss in here. Buss is finally getting games and playing really well. We'd be trading him out just as he's getting ready.
I don't get it either, his game against Fremantle was a positive step forward. Given that I wouldn't be writing him off at the moment.

I assume people are only trading Buss because if we are wanting Butters, El Souki plus a key defender we are going to need picks. Buss and Buku are out of contract so it would makes sense they'd be used to get more picks in for an upgrade on our defence.

What Cal said on Gettable yesterday was interesting in that teams might look at players they can pull from the dogs to help pay for butters. I think it's they see an opportunity that they can use. Who would they target though other than Buku and Buss.

Cleary? He's a decent lock down player but his decision making with the ball isn't that good Reminds me of smaller Frost. He might be 1 for Tassie next year.

Port have asked after Garcia before as well as eagles. Both need a mid that can play fwd. So do Carlton. Garcia at carlton or port makes sense. He's different to the mids they got. El-souki replaces him.

VDM is decent at his job as a pressure forward. Something a few teams lack. True Footy did a list of ranking every teams small forward group. A few teams obviously need help. They listed Tigers, North, Carlton, Port, Essendon & Eagles with below par in forward. Probably really should be called a small/mid forwards group because they add non-smalls to it.

Bailey Williams the only other player not out of contract than those I listed that didn't extend last year or this year. Ppl hear think he goes home. Could also play at another vic club. A little doubtful he goes to essendon tigers or blues unless he gets a really good offer. Maybe King will sound him out at the dees. Would be a good fit there with Sparrow going home. That said he's pretty much an integral player at the dogs atm.

I'm not sure we have too much currency with fringe players. Cleary, Garcia, VDM won't net us much.

On guys actually playing, perhaps Buks gets a second rounder as FA compo, but doubtful. Williams I'd rather keep but is perhaps the only currency we could obtain.

You've just suggested 3 players that would be worth absolutely nothing at the trade table. Zilch.

I couldn't be more against trading best 22 players like Williams to help pay for Butters. It's either 3 first round picks or we walk away. Spending $2 million and 3 first rounders is more than enough risk without cutting into our already weak depth, especially at the wing position where we are incredibly thin.

Exactly this. Our problem has never been that we don't have enough top line talent - it has always been that our bottom six aren't up to it. Losing our solid depth players to get Butters just exacerbates that long standing problem. Butters, Bont and Richards can't win without a team behind them that isn't entirely made up of children.

I wonder if cooper hynes is someone who could be tapped on the shoulder if we need abit of currency. Not that I’d trade him just think he’s one who might have currency other teams would be interested in Lachie Jaques another

Again why?

Did Brisbane or Geelong offer up any of their previous first round selections or promising youngsters to help us out when our star players wanted to leave?

I agree with what you’re saying , butters will get done for our next 3 first rounders. We need to somehow cover el souki tho and the talk is we are going after a decent key defender. How do we get them across aswell as bring in el souki someone’s going to get shaken loose

There is little point us trading out fringe players who will net us next to nothing.

If we seriously want to build up a chest of draft picks to land marquee players, then we need to be willing to trade potential best 23 players such as Williams, Freijah, Sanders, West, Weightman, Dale, O'Donnell...

Players such as Busslinger, Khamis, Hynes, Cleary, and Garcia will get us such a small return that it will cost us too much to replace them like-for-like, and they won't move the needle when it comes to getting picks for Butters, Weitering or similar gun players. Six or eight fringe players do not equal one gun when it comes to draft capital.

I can't picture Carlton trading Weitering. Especially with a new coach. Their defence is beyond bad, imagine Lewis Young being your #1 defender 🤢.

Surely Harry McKay is the one that goes if they want draft picks in, he's crap.

I get that people are conditioned to be negative in this space but there's not a planet where getting Butters is a bad thing. Whether it's 3 or even 4 picks it would be worth it. It would be the biggest recruit we've ever had.

Talk of someone like Ed Richards being including is laughable. When these trades happen it's never a gun for a gun. Just like Carlton wanting Heeney or Gulden for Curnow. It almost never happens.

I'm sick of missing out like we did with Barass and even Hurley years ago.

Butters - 3 first rounders
Butts - FA
El Souki - A couple of mid second rounders should get it done. We have our own + F2 to play with.
