Player Watch Pick #18 (2019) - Mitch Georgiades

Makes the hard look easy

And makes the easy look hard

He is the biggest almost player in the AFL. A better set shot accuracy rate would put him in Tredders and Schulz territory but instead he lacks the ability to convert in clutch time.

He's still one of my favorite players and I obviously much prefer watching him instead of the Dixonball slop we were stuck with for years, but it's still incredibly frustrating.
I think Dixon would have been able to convert the easier shots missed by Georgiades.

Top 5 Port players for Goals + Goal Assists in 2026 so far:
Georgiades (25 + 5) = 30
Durdin (15 + 9) = 24
Horne-Francis (11 + 11) = 22
Whitlock (11 + 3) = 14
Richards (4 + 8) = 12

Reminds me of the classic weekend golfer who misses consistently within 4ft but can put it either in or on the lip form 30ft plus.

He stands over the kick too long and over analyses it. On the hard ones he gets back and just gets on with it, as he has an out if he misses. For the closer/easier ones he puts the pressure on himself that it has to go through and he ends up leaning back or too close to the man on the mark.

I wonder why players tend to lean back or poke at the ball when in close range whereas they kick through the ball from longer distances?
dont want to lose the footy by kicking it over the fence.

It feels like it should be so, so farken easy to fix.

Like, just aim at something 5 or 10 rows back in the crowd. The ball will follow it's trajectory.

You look at field kicking and it's like a 1 in 20 chance that someone misses a 25m field kick by several metres. It's very rare. Yet put them in front of the sticks and it's like a 50/50 chance they could hit the side of a barn from 30 out.

Drives me nuts.

Frustrating. But man we're bottom 2 without him, and the future is bleak. He can get over his mental yips. 50-60 goal key forwards don't grow on trees. He's got a season of 80+ in him if he gets over his mental demons.
100% true.
Technique is sound from distance.
Like many who miss from close in, he doesn’t kick through it, and it scrambles the natural swing arc of the leg.
Don’t have to kick the leather off the pill.
Just an easy 20-40m kick of medium level power, that goes through at least three quarter post high.
Bet you the accuracy improves a lot!

He is costing us games.

He kills our momentum when our players work their arse and hit him up on a lead 30m from goal, a straight forward shot and he misses by plenty.

He can kick 100 goals in a season if he improves his conversion rate to that of Ben King's. There is too much Tony Robbins only speak positive, positive, positive about MG missing simple set shots.

Talk is cheap on a cost effective basis. Get him a goal kicking coach, be it Ben Perkins, Jay Schulz, or Shaun Burgoyne who has worked with Perkins and works in our admin department, so if we pay him more we can sneak it outside the soft cap.

Someone needs to show him this footage of Gary Ablett from the 1994 PF.

Scores are tied, 5 seconds to go, Ablett takes a mark and all he has to do is kick a point and Geelong go thru to the Grand final.

Watch what Ablett does. He goes thru his normal set routine and approaches the kick as if he is 50m out not 5m out and try and poke the ball thru the goals. The ball goes straight thru the middle post high. MG when he is 30m out tries to poke the ball thru the goal posts and doesn't kick thru it properly. Its the difference between being a good player and a great player.

We should also keep count of how many consecutive games he has missed. Bit unlucky with the poster but we really needed that.

Learn how to kick before you lose us yet another game, then again we would not be near winning if u were not playing.

Yeah hard to criticise too much given he is the only player who looks remotely capable of kicking a goal each week, but **** man you are a full time full forward how are you this bad at the one key aspect of your job

kill me GIF

Time to drop him to make a statement. Can’t be missing as he is on a weekly basis. Learn to kick for gods sake, it’s not difficult.

He’s turning his career into what could be 700 goals into a 450 goal career. We need better from him.
