I've probably said it before but imo it's a bit shit to gut the list, force the coach to field one of the least experienced sides each week, and then lay the fact we suck at the coaches feet
Sorry, can’t accept that argument. Too much context, not reductive enough.

I can live with ‘footy is a win/loss business’ AKA the Damien Barrett logic.

I think while that is the issue for some.

Brad also makes decisions about team optimisation that are completely head scratching. Ie playing Dyson Sharpe at HF for most of his games so far.

If the point is to have players grow, develop and optimise into effective groups (Forward Back and mid) it’s frustrating watching a team that continually goes 1 step forward 2 steps back.

Or is it one step back to go two steps forward in future?

I don't lay the fact we suck at his feet. I think we would suck less with a better coach is all.

The context of deliberately tanking for the spoon/trade leverage with no1 pick in the preseason draft is the only context many of his moves make sense into.

I’m a huge believer in playing the young guys.but things like dropping Edwards to move Langford back forward where Langford had been pushed back/wing because the forward line functions worse with him in it is frustrating.

There’s a few others in that same situation

Because easing in a young player by developing another part of his game is terrible?
Why would you not try things when you are developing a side?
It was never going to be a long term thing and secondly the knock on players before they are drafted is often just being a one position player.
I do not find it baffling that they gave Sharp more forward time. To me it makes perfect sense.
I would rather the coach didn’t just think inside the box while we are not close to being a consistent finals side.

Players do need to play with each other, particularly the back 6 but all spots have players rotating in and out.
For me it is more the players need to know the role in a particular position.
They young players can not just be one trick.

1. Depends on the context but the way Essendon does it yes. It is terrible to play guys out of position before they’ve even established themselves as afl players and killed their confidence.
2. Love trying things as a developing side. My frustration is when they find something that seems to work and go away from it.

If your a team without identity/coheasion surely discovering that is a huge part of the rebuilding process

When have we gone away from something and not gone back to it recently?

This isn’t really accurate.

Sharp played his first game off a HFF and took a couple of CBAs. He got injured in his second game at a CBA. He came back from injury and was on a HFF. His next game was 76% of CBAs then he was taking most CBAs in the next one where he got injured.

He’s a first year kid that’s had some injuries but is clearly getting midfield time whilst trying to balance return from injury and development. Hardly like he’s being frozen out on a HFF.

I have a lot of gripes but his inability to pick a balanced side is impressive.
I do not agree with all the selections either but picking a balanced side while you have a few injuries and you are simply not that good is not simple.

The structure / team selection of the side today when you knew it was going to be wet is just stupid. Did Brad think the game was at marvel

Partly just the current balance of the list, plus injury.

Kako and Sharp would be playing if they were fit, maybe SEH as well. Martin, Fiorini, Johnson, Clarke all probably in the 1s if fit. Unwin if he was fit might have been an option, HEA coming from a long way back fitness wise.

Otherwise who is fit that could we have brought in? Gresham is pretty bad. Setterfield and Tsatas seem to be treated as competing for the same spot.

We have a bit of an imbalanced list to begin with that’s compounded by injury.

-13 CP at QT again. Game over already.

15th for contested possession differential
15th for first possession differential
16th for hard ball gets
17th for first possession
17th for clearances
17th for clearance differential
18th for contested possessions
18th for hard ball get differential

Maybe what is most disappointing is our 1%ers

1st - 50
2nd - 49
3rd - 48
...
AFL AVG - 41
...
16th - 37
17th - 37
Essendon - 30

Would love to know what KPIs our head coach is being assessed on. For all the youth we have one area of the field where we had relative experience was the midfield (albeit hamstrung by having to run Blakiston as ruck to start the year).

And the reality is we just aren't close on anything

Then we look at 17th meters gained, 17th meters gained per disposal, 17th for time in forward half, 16th on Kick Threat rating and it's just clear we cannot win a ball ourselves and when we do get it our ball movement is so slow or sideways that we present no real danger to anyone we face. Shows too, we're 18th on xScore based on where we start our offensive chains.

Yeh of course. I get that but playing gresham in the forward half day on a day like this offers more than nick cox in the wet. And then you move Langford to the wing

Gresham is also not very good and probably getting delisted at the end of the year. I believe there’s a rumour in the media he has a game trigger for another season so there’s also potentially a good reason to not play him.
