Looking at this list the most worrying things for me is the lack of a mature back up ruckman, no KPD depth and the core of our inside midfield group is old and it is coming clearer it needs replacing. 4 players over 30 in that inside group btw which is worrying and why we need to land Butters otherwise we are suddenly going to have a lot of inexperienced players in the most important part of the ground.

Butters butts and el souki is a big priority 3 big holes

Kinda think the first two picks of the MSD will be like this:

Rich - Jaxon Artemis
WCE - Kane Bevan
Port - ???
GWS - ???

Not sure about Port and GWS and the order after that could change a bit. Really a competent back up ruck should be our priority where we are picking unless there is something there we are 100% sure we cannot ignore.

Just from pure gut feel I see Port going an Intercept/rebound defender and GWS a midfielder.

I definitely agree Butters is a need, but apart from Treloar (hasn't played a key role since 2024), Liberatore, and Bont (only just turned 30), who is the fourth midfielder?

It’s annoying seeing guys like Jai Serong and Mason Cox play roles for good teams.

Feel like both of those guys would have played for us and were very cheap pick ups.

Could change a bit of there if for example WCE select Zac Mainwaring instead.

Ngl though Kennedy was 30 too. Certainly looks like he is slowing down quite a bit lately though. Engine room definitely needs a turn over in the next couple of years though Butters is a good start but we need to keep our eyes open in coming drafts and trade periods for atleast more stable depth in the area

Would like 2 picks at the MSD.
Yeah there are some younger guys that have been tearing it up that would be really good picks for the longer term but our need for a ruck right now probably trumps picking any of them atm which is disappointing

Would have loved to have a crack at someone like Ollie Griffin etc if we did have a second pick

Kennedy of last year compared to this year is such a stark change. If he continues on that trajectory we will be in trouble.

Need more Sellwoods
#21 Ollie Griffin
Forward | 186cm | 04/06/2007

Stats:
17 disposals, 9 marks, 5 inside 50s, 4 goals

Griffin is an absolute powerhouse seemingly on a collision course for the mid-season draft. He put on another marking masterclass against Oakleigh, searching high up the ground and bringing down pack marks. The over-ager showed a great knack for accessing the ball at the top of his reach and tends to play above his 186cm listing, so much so that Sandy would have hoped to have two of him out there. Griffin also utilised his booming kick to get the ball moving forward, including with an unbelievable goal from inside the centre square. He has the capacity to catch fire at times and is a genuine competitor – which extends to his underrated pressure game.

#21 Ollie Griffin
Forward | 186cm | 04/06/2007

Stats: 10 disposals, 4 marks, 10 tackles, 1 goal

Griffin may not have yielded a strong goal return this time out, but showed why he is so multi-faceted. He competed hard all day for the Dragons, laying a game-high 10 tackles and standing tall in packs. The over-ager managed to hold onto a couple of contested grabs but his physicality was felt more in open play, where he laid heavy hits and looked to open up scoring chances. He ended up with 1.2 and put a couple more shots wide or short of the big sticks.

Wish we had two picks in the MSD...

I rate Thomas Barnett from Coburg as a key defender but haven't seen us linked to him (or any other defender for that matter).

Will Bevo really play a mature state league ruck in the second half of the year? I just can't see it.

I don't think recruiting Butters is the move. Our list has too many issues. I think we need to cut deep and commit to a proper rebuild. Time to plan for life after Bont too. Bev will never agree to doing that though - he loves finishing middle of the table because it prevents him from losing his million dollar salary.
It would be ridiculous to give away 2 million a year plus 3 first round picks.

Hopefully he gets over the leg injury he is carrying

He really needs to be rested but we just don't have the coverage.

Agree. A few posters saying he should be dropped though, not everyone gives him the slack for carrying an injury that the bigger names get.

Bont, Ed and Kennedy all need rests - but if we did that next week... 🫣

It smells like the Tim Kelly trade in the sense we are giving up the farm for a star and neglecting everything else (not saying we ARE, it just feels like that).

And considering our last ten years of trade history I can’t see us carrying out one great big off season change with other aspects of the list alongside getting Butters.

His goal kicking is a worry aswell this year. Was so accurate last year that you could almost mark it down before he had a shot this season its the opposite. Hopefully it can all be put down to injury or temporary slump not a long term issue.

Our injuries seemed to increase as soon as Innes left. I'd hope we do some moving and shaking of our medical department.

Still think we should have another crack at O'Driscoll at the end of the year. Not a world beater but we have targeted Erasmus, Dev Robertson, O'Halloran etc previously as well as interest in O'Driscoll, so fits the age and athletic profile. Can play a few different positions, has had issues with his body but has been generally healthy so far this season. Should come cheap and probably starts on the wing for us next year.

Who are some other borderline best 23-28 players on other lists we can target to improve our bottom 6 ala Sydney landing Jai Serong last year?
