Toast 06 Draft

Going through the team that played yesterday, I noticed that every single player taken in the 2006 draft that is still on our list, played. Except for Brad Dick who you imagine would have played had he not been injured. The only two players taken that year not on our list were Marty Clarke (returned home), and Chris Bryan (just a quick fix for ruck stocks).

06 delivered Ben Reid, Nathan Brown, Chris Dawes, Brad Dick, Tyson Goldsack, and Sharrod Wellingham and Brent Macaffer through the rookie list.

Many would agree that 05 was probably our best due to it producing 2 of our best players, and 08 delivered two gems in Sidebottom and Beams. But to pretty much get every single pick right in one draft, all who played pivotal roles in premiership success is quite amazing. I don't think anybody can speak of Derek Hine and the rest of the recruiting staff enough.

Given how young they all are, and with the draft concessions now in effect, one would hope and think that this team will win many more flags in the coming years.

Yeah, that one was considered a mega draft and we really capitalised on it in a big way, especially in terms of key position stocks who have really come along this year. To draft four blokes over 190cm and have them all play a role in a grand final win at such a young age, well, that's just an incredible effort by all involved. Then to get a couple of gems through the rookie draft was an incredible effort. Now all we need is for Dickie to get his body in order and become a part of our next premiership side.

Damn good work by Hine and the recruiting staff, our drafting during 05 and 06 in particular proved to be masterful and really helped set us up for this premiership victory.
