We took a 26 year old ruck because we have nobody if Cameron gets injured. Pretty obvious tbh.
We took a 22 year old KPd because we seriously lack in that area.
We when took 27 year old Pods likely as best available. He’s not a KPF, seems a more mobile third tall, and with Elliot gone, membrey on way out we lack talent here.

There’s nothing desperate about our selections at all. They balance the list
There is no games experience in our next level. The selections of two mature age players improves this. This is not just 6 month solutions, with end of year retirements these players could be even more important. Our next level VFL players need to deliver more. I feel Swadling must be selected soon. Other players must stand up and force their own selection. I have seen negative articles about our aged MSD selections. Our MSD ages are less than the ages of our inactive players.

You’re right about Coe. To be fair we took a reasonable risk going into the season with DC and two young untried rucks. I’d have felt better if we had a mid 20’s back up ruck like Carlton did with Reidy and now we have.

Someone posted our age profile earlier and we need more talent and depth in that 22-27 age range due to some failed drafts. If we snag 1 or 2 out of this that can play a role for a year or two we’re doing well.

Herbert's disposal both by hand and foot is really average. Probably a big reason why we avoided him
I’m devastated Herbert didn’t slide to us. I was looking forward to pronouncing his name as Austin Powers would all season long.

No rookie me link for Coe and just minimal information on Puncher
That says more about the quality of the media coverage on lower league levels.

Harrison Coe doesn't have a Rookie Me link because he wasn't a prospect at 18 and that's their only focus - He only came into his own in his 20s, but he's been playing VFL for three years, so you can get stats for all of his games. He's played 34 VFL games and all of them were streamed on the AFL website for free, so any lack of info on him is really down to not caring to find it.

Liam Puncher was in Sydney's Academy and then has been playing in the SANFL, reserves and then seniors. He's not exactly a secret to anyone.

I’m not against making needs based selections…on the contrary I don’t have an issue with selecting a ruck or a key back.

The issue I have is, are we purely focusing on the last 10 games of the season only?

Did we select the best prospects in terms of their ability to make the grade or did we just select the best “ready made” prospects to select for the rest of the season because we have a history of not really trusting younger players to fill roles?
Do we understand where this list is at?
Do we really expect to make a flag tilt with this current group of players to top up with so many mature agers post the age of 27?

We talk about players coming in, developing, learning the system before getting games…yet we bring in players who are magically now going to pick all this up in a matter of weeks and hit the ground running?

Look at every prospect taken last night…and 99% of clubs have taken younger prospects.
We decide it’s best to go the opposite way like we aren’t already flushed with mature bodies primarily.

We are trying to seriously hang on for dear life ….it reeks of desperation to me.

I hope to be proven wrong but we missed an opportunity to think beyond this season only.
You have said you agree with the recruitment of Coe and Puncher. And feel Pod is going to make West “rot in the twos” which is wrong given POD is an Elliot replacement - and Elliot’s role doesn’t impact West.

As a Club we want to be perennial contenders- picking kids in the MSD, given our current injury list would not have moved the dial on competitiveness, like the 3 selections we’ve made.
Further, picking 3 22 yolds would have made marginal difference to our age demographic compared to those selected, and required us to stretch our development resources far more.
And even then, we have no idea if they’ll ever be as ready as those we’ve selected.

I understand that I’ve countered your opinion already, but I just wanted to follow up by asking what your approach would have been last night to ensure we brought in 3 ready made 22yo future AFL players? This is how I would break down how the night panned out for us:

  • Carlton take the first player on our board, Riley.
  • Herbert, HHK and Coe make it through to our first pick.
  • We know Coe will land at the Dogs if we pass and HHK is likely to the Crows. We get to find out what our priority in this draft is and it’s a ruck.
  • Having chosen Coe we’re all in on Herbert making it to 15. He’s off the board at 13.
  • We select Puncher who I have to assume you’re fine with based on his birth certificate and literally nothing else.
  • We lastly take Pod who every man and his dog with half a brain knew was a lock as soon as Elliott went down.

I’m left asking myself what path could you have possibly taken that would have resulted in a better outcome from your perspective?

As an FYI the draft moving to a Tuesday night will allow an extra session for the three of them to integrate. Puncher would already be in Melbourne, or will arrive shortly, so I’d be surprised if all 3 aren’t playing VFL on Saturday.
I have been quite critical of Collingwood's recruiting over the last decade if not longer. However - given the selections exercised by other clubs in relation to players that we may have been highly interested in - I think that Shane O'Bree & his recruiting staff have performed as well as I had anticipated. We definitely needed a ruckman & a ruckman who was not a development or project type. So I think that we achieved that outcome. Secondly we badly needed a key position defender who had been playing at the highest level below the AFL & we appeared to have achieved that aim. In addition Puncher is only 22 & so in my mind that is a bonus. Finally, we need to goal-kicking forward who could be a utility type within the entire forward region & we appeared to achieve that outcome. So all in all, I am definitely not disappointed in the results. OK. Goodbye & good luck.

Good luck to you, I agree wholeheartedly

So bit like a 6 month Trial for the 3
this was their decision.
The player has to nominate terms. I imagine most players nominate the short term to get any opportunity. You'd have to be really confident in your chances if you nominate longer term. And given two out of the three are 26+ makes sense they are after any opportunity

Really betting on themselves to show out , giving themselves the best opportunity to turn a 6 month contract into potentially a 2-3 year contract.

It's better than being stuck on 18 months full time on a base contract .

Very True having 6 Month instead of 18 Month does Increase your Chance of getting Drafted

I wonder if Puncher will train this week?. The other 2 are in Melbourne so I imagine they will.

IF he came over today then Good Chance he will
