In answer to the original question, this is advice from the Reserve Bank of Australia

The Reserve Bank concluded that the best ways it could assist people with a vision impairment were to:

  • maintain length differentials between denominations – in fact these differentials were increased in the new series of banknotes from 5 mm to 7 mm. While the representative groups would have preferred greater differentials, they considered 7 mm acceptable;
  • maintain strong colour contrasts between denominations; and
  • use bolder numerals.
These forms of assistance are very traditional ones. The Reserve Bank continues to look for new ways of assisting people with a vision impairment.

Blind Citizens Australia has developed a credit-card-sized device that uses the length differentials to help distinguish banknotes. The Reserve Bank funded the project and the device is being provided by Blind Citizens Australia free to those in need. The toll free number for Blind Citizens Australia is 1800 033 660.

Used to love the old 100 dollar note when growing up. Such a high valued note to a child, and I always thought Mawson looked real bad ass on it. :D

Yeah I always though he was some old knight from way back and the gear around his head was his chain mail. Sword hidden out of view.

Best note ever.

The CBA ATMs in Martin Place in Sydney only dispense 50s and 100s. That's the only place I've ever come across it, everywhere else is the standard 20/50.

Massive pain when you're trying to buy a $5 roll for lunch. The number of dirty looks I used to get from fast food places for handing over a green note I don't care to count.

I LOL'd. But I agree. Great Note.:D

Although according to the red label it is of an Italian astronaut.

When I handed in exactly $100 worth of chips to the money dude at Crown I was shattered when he gave me 2 50's.

Thankfully when I came back an hour later, the guy gave me a greeny.

I should go to Crown more often.

I thought it was because when you put notes into a machine to pay for something they can tell what note it is by the size and shape. Same thing with coins.

I would suggest that this technology was developed as a result of the forms of money we used, not the other way around.

I don't know but each bill is larger than the inferior value to the other

Dunno if this is true, but I have heard the reason that they get larger as the denomination gets bigger is;

Back when they were printed on special, restricted, just-about-impossible-to-get paper (as US notes still are?) it was possible for a counterfeiter to chemically "wash" the printing off a note and then create a counterfeit note on the newly blank paper. As you can imagine, a major problem for counterfeiters is getting the note to "feel" right, and have the watermark the old paper notes used to have.

If the denominations decreased in size (or stayed the same for that matter), it would be possible to get a $10 note, wash it, cut it down to the appropriate size if neccessary and then print on it as a $100 note. However, if the size of the note increased with the value, it wouldn't be possible to do this.

The guy in front of me in the line at Berlin Zoo tried to buy tickets for himself, his wife and their toddler with a 500 Euro note. Unsurprisingly the teller refused, then pointed to the 'no 500 Euro notes' sign.

I wonder when we will see higher denominations than $100.
