Player Watch #12 Angus Sheldrick

This is the first run of multiple games he’s had since mid 2023 (excluding sub roles) which is unfortunate given our current state. He’s definitely not flashy (THANK GOD) but at this stage I’ll take a plodder who gets his hands on the footy, tackles, and does it without too much fuss.

Good on him but he litterally just plods about.. More athletically mids just burn him at clearance. Slow and not necessarily a great kick. At least have one of these assets.

Ive said it (many times) before & I’ll say it again - he is not slow.

It’s an absolute myth.

I watched enough of him in the colts to know he ain’t slow.

And he beat 12 of the 18 representatives in the GF sprint.

Say why you will about his disposal (which can be shoddy) - but the “Gus is slow” rubbish just ain’t true.

I think the Sheldrick ball use needs to improve but he isn't flush for options or guidance
But he just bangs it all the time.

There was a moment in the third where rampe was running through the square and hand balled to him and he belted in his right under some pressure.

But here the thing - rampe is Both a better and longer kick than sheldrick and he was in his left. If we just want to hit an up and under kick we should have let rampe kick it. This is sheldrick s problem atm - and one he shared with Grundy and ladhams and may reflect the loss of a person such as gulden. These guys should not be kicking it. Every time Grundy or ladhams gets a free they just turn the bloody thing over. And ever time sheldrick gets it he might kick it forwards but any clown could get it and kick it forwards.

Cox was absolutely right when he noted that we might win stoppages and clearances and yer our exits are messy and never uncontested. Opponents get it and chain handballs and they are out the front of the stoppage. Sheldrick has got to find a way to use hands more often than feet even acknowledging that the receivers we are currently play8ng are poor.

I actually think Rowy is our biggest culprit of just throwing it on the boot at the moment. Granted, he's woefully out of form, whereas Sheldrick should in theory be in good touch, and he's also our best pressure player by a mile, so is still contributing in that regard.

I just think the absences of key outside players combined with the awful performance of the outside players we have had has all but eradicated our players' confidence in linking up by hand and running & carrying.

It's emblematic of the whole side really - hardly anyone trusts themselves with the ball, nor do they trust the next teammate in the chain. So to paraphrase a great scene from Veep, our players are torn between two methods - no decision, and bad decision.

Alll true , but does anyone not just bang it on the boot right now

Chad kicks to the light tower

Agree with this - I wonder whether his thinking is only heeney and I can actually do anything in this team maybe if I kick it high enough one of us can run the 25 metres from the midfield to make it

Think he is doing it on purpose at times , we have nothing ahead of the footy and can see him running on the spot to try to give time for them to get back

Can believe this. It’s a pet bugbear of mine that every team not just us has forwards so far up the ground that the only place to kick to them is over the back. When the lions kept their forwards deep and they just cut us apart in the gf it was sort of nice to know that you could still kick a ball to someone leading at the ball instead of away from it

Agree. Jack Hiscox was fast, very fast, but I didn’t see him coming 6th in the GF sprint.

Maybe if they got protection !

At least Rowbottom makes decent contact with the ball when he bangs it on the boot. Some of Sheldrick's efforts last night were embarrassing. He's hard at it and is a two sided player but he struggles to get across the ground. Hope I'm wrong, but not convinced about him and Corey Warner.

just needs more time at this level to feel comfortable and be more composed. He will never be an elite user but his disposal will improve. However he knows how to read the play and find the pill and I’d say he is the only one on our list who can do it. If he can build up some chemistry with the other mids he can release the other mids away from contest with hands.

Not convinced but happy if you're right. We did give him number 12.

GF Sprint is a joke now. They have trouble finding enough players who want to do it.

If he’s a plodder describe the vast majority of the 22 that went out there last week.
He’s in his 13th game or something and winning clearances. Yes he can tidy up his disposal but labeling him a plodder at this stage of his career is ridiculous.

Yeah can't blame him for it on the weekend. Adelaide almost always had an extra back and he was just doing what he could to not turn it over straight away

A friends son who recently played for Freo , only game over for it , as it was a freebee and he could catch up with family

Sure, but it suggests that he is statistically at least above average over 100m.

That said his issue isn't top speed, it's his burst speed/agility. He's quick in one direction when he gets a "run up" so to speak, but he's not quick to change direction or accelerate from standing still to find space. Compare to Chad Warner - they probably have similar top speeds, but Warner is much, much more agile.

But theres things Gus can do to improve this, and he can also learn to play within these limitations. JPK was similar and he did alright.
