Player Watch #13: Jack Higgins

Richmond don't play or at least try and avoid playing slow plodders like Higgins in midfield. To do so would be to go back to 2016 with Anthony Miles. We would be better off trying inexperienced players capable of playing the Richmond way than to revert back to that old style.

Edwards is an inside/outside mid, the role you suggest he plays doesn't exist.

Pickett won two flags in a week playing as mid.
You do realise inside midfieldand outside midfielder are two very different roles that require very different traits

Pickett played as an outside mid for both the VFL and AFL grand final

Higgins is no slower than Cotch or Prestia

Pickett wasn't an outside mid at all. We literally recruited him with his strengths being his ability to win the ball.

Higgins is much slower than Cotch and Prestia and doesn't spread from the contest anywhere near as hard as Cotchin and Prestia do. Dow and RCD who are behind Pickett, Ross, Graham and Bolton as far being options to replace Cotch and Prestia are far more like for like replacements for what those two bring to the team than Higgins is.

Definitely easy to forget. One wonders if he can turn into a genuine ball magnet midfielder.

Higgins, 178cm, ended the carnival averaging 27 disposals, 13 contested possessions, six tackles and five clearances. That added to the work he did forward of centre, where he still managed to kick six goals and provide a further seven goal assists from just four games.

Such form carried through to the second half of the TAC Cup season, where Higgins was influential in helping Oakleigh finish the campaign as minor premiers.

Multiple 30-disposal games in the midfield were followed with huge hauls up forward, including an incredible seven-goal match against the Pioneers in August.

It saw Higgins end the TAC Cup season averaging 23 disposals and 2.3 goals per match.

The end product? In the 33 games Champion Data has covered Higgins throughout his junior career, he has averaged 145 ranking points — the best average figure ever recorded by the AFL’s official number crunchers, beating Tom Rockliff’s record of 144.

He’s already a ball magnet up forward compared to his teammates. He’s playing really well right now considering the time he had out of the game, I think we may as well roll the dice and see if he can take on the challenge.

19 disposals 10 contested 84%de 2 clearances 1goal 2 goal assists and 8 score involvements

Big game by snags back to his best that work rate to get lambo the ball to kick his third is pure Richmond footy

Jr8 loved it you could hear him on the broadcast making a big deal out of it

And the umps don't hate him
There’s a reason umps hate Greene - he’s full of s**t. And in the last two GWS matches there’s been a couple of incidents that probably identify why.

Last week vs Collingwood he crashed into Mayne’s back - clear free kick. Toby could be heard in the umpires mic - “I got pushed into him”. Unfortunately for Toby the umpire saw what the replay clearly showed - there was no shove by a Collingwood player. Not even close.

This week vs Hawthorn he did it again, claiming a mark that was not even close. Again replays showed a clear bump-ball. The umpire just responded to him with the disdain he deserved.

He’s his own worst enemy with the umps.

Said it when we drafted. He has dane Zorko written all over him and is a genuine ball magnet. He finds the footy and works extremely hard to get it!

The exact player we need to get clearances - an area we have lacked for a long time. His time is now and I don’t want to see his abilities be wasted as a half forward flank for the rest of his career. Please let it happen!

But Cotchin and Prestia along with Dusty are easily our best inside ball winners and its an area we could really do a lot better in. We will also be without edwards whose hands in tight means he gets plenty of contested ball also.

I think the best two options we have that can win inside ball and give us good clearances if these blokes are missing is Ross and RC-D.They will give us plenty of size at the contest as well.

The thing is Dusty is our biggest mid and at just 185cm Cotchin is a big mid compared to many in the team.Prestia while short is very nuggety and has a body made for inside work.

I would suggest Caddy but he has been bitterly disappointing as a big inside player.

Has toby potential
yep said this last week and his draft report said the same. not quite as good overhead but has a similar build. can find alot of the footy in the middle but he is also very smart as a forward like toby. knows how to use his body to out mark players that are bigger than him, and they are both very similar in terms of goal kicking and there ability to create goals from nothing.

Higgins shouldn't be compared to those blokes, he has a different skill set.

He's a good ball user, great goal sense, high footy IQ.

I think his ceiling as a player is pretty high, would expect him to be cemented in the team soon

Agree, not sure why the mantra to go into the midfield. Paul Chapman was a fair half forward.
Also he connects play back to forward really well due to his quick reactions and solid skills.
