Seems someone better do something, won't be able to catch him in the SANFL much and can't be bothered doing anything long but he deserves some facts at least. For some reason my A in about refuses to capitalise, that is strange.

David MacKay
Fast Facts:
Jumper No: 14
Height: 181
Weight: Sweet F.A. (69kg)
DOB: 25/07/1988
Drafted at: Pick 48, 2006 ND.
Recruited From: Oakleigh Chargers (TAC cup)
Contracted until: End of 2008.

About: This incredibly skinny midfielder joined the Crows in the 2007 season after being drafted at number 48 in the national draft. His 2007 season was ruined by recurring hamstring injuries after playing only 2 and a bit SANFL games for South Adelaide. In his first (and last full) league game he was voted among the best players. Much like Richard Douglas the year before Mackay was drafted after performing very well in the TAC finals series.

Mackay seemed reasonably excited to be drafted, his parents shed a few tears but in his own words, "They'll just have to deal with it." Or at least his words were something like that, can't find a quote. “I guess it was the realisation of a dream come true for me,” he said. “I realised then that this is all real. I was really excited; there were a few mixed emotions about moving away, but it’s so exciting and I just couldn’t wait to come over.”

The Oakleigh Chargers Regional Manager, Stephen Conole, had this to say about him. "David's quick and kicks the footy really well and played well on the big grounds in September, which should hold him in good stead."
David will be looking to perform well in the SANFL and bulk up a bit in 2008 while hopefully making his AFL debut. If he can follow through on the glimpses of very goodness we saw in 2007 he should be a very good player.

won't be able to catch him in the SANFL much

No-one will be able to catch him in the SANFL much if his form for South in his ressies game, and the 3/4 of the seniors game he played was anything to go by.

It's kind of hard to really compare him to anyone because most will have seen him at training or in his 1 SANFL game.
I saw him playing in the Norwood game last, looked very smooth and skilled.

I'd compare him mostly to a twig, about the same size.

Big year on the menu for D-Mac

1:43 PM Thu 10 January, 2008

HE HAD a taste of AFL in 2007 and after a frustrating season on the sidelines David Mackay is hungry for more. The hard-running midfielder impressed Adelaide’s coaching staff in his first pre-season and earned a spot in the Crows line-up for the NAB Challenge game against Melbourne in Mount Gambier.
Mackay, despite his light frame, showed glimpses of his ball-winning brilliance and looked set for a big season with SANFL club South Adelaide.
But after just a handful of games with the Panthers it all went horribly wrong for the 19-year-old.
“I had a hamstring injury in round two and it was originally meant to be only a two- or three-week injury, but it turned into eight weeks,” Mackay said.
“Then the week before I was due to come back I did the same thing again in a different spot. It was an unusual sort of tear, not your general hamstring tear, and it probably took a few more weeks to heal.
“Once it healed I still had to get all that training and conditioning back, so it ended up being a season-ending injury after round two.
“It was a pretty long year on the sidelines.”
Mackay’s injury was so bad the club opted to send him home to Victoria where he could escape from football.
“All I was able to do was walk, so I went home for a couple of weeks,” he said.
“I did some training back home in a different environment just to clear my head a bit. That was the second time around and I sort of came back to Adelaide, like I had a fresh start and tried to get my hamstring right again.”
Mackay, who had no previous history of hamstring or injury trouble, slowly regained his strength and mobility through rigorous Pilates exercises and countless laps of the club swimming pool.
During his recovery the talented onballer grew increasingly frustrated as Adelaide’s injury list mounted and fellow first-year players Nick Gill and Bryce Campbell were given their opportunity at AFL level.
“It was very frustrating especially when you see the boys who had no pre-season playing nearly every game. I did the whole pre-season and didn’t get to play, so it was definitely very frustrating and hard,” Mackay said.
“But I think it makes you stronger. It makes you more resilient and even hungrier for this season.”
Mackay also used his time on the sidelines to become physically stronger by adding five kgs of bulk in just over 12 months.
D-Mac, as his teammates call him, says he’s still getting back into full training, but already he’s caught the eye of physical performance manager Stephen Schwerdt.
“One guy that has really impressed me during the first five weeks of pre-season is Dave Mackay,” Schwerdt said.
“He had a bad run last year with hamstring injuries, but he’s done everything right so far. It’s hard with the young guys because you try and find their workload limit without going over the top. Perhaps we made an error with David last year because he got a bad injury.”
“We were pretty cautious when he injured his hamstring the second time because he’s a great lad, has a good attitude to footy and we want him to have a long career. I’m really hoping he has a good year in ’08 because he’s prepared himself well.”
Mackay is confident he’s “over the worst” in terms of the risk of re-injury and is now feeling as fit as he ever has.
“It was pretty hard to increase my skills and fitness while I was injured, but with my strength and injury prevention, I think I’m well ahead of where I was last year.
“Just with that new knowledge that you gain from being injured for so long, you’re a bit smarter and listen to your body a bit more. I just can’t wait to play some footy.”

Young guns thrilled after debut in Dubai

FOUR Crows who played their first game for the club in the victory over Collingwood in Dubai will have no trouble remembering their debut.

James Sellar, troubled throughout his first season at West Lakes by groin soreness, bagged three goals from full forward in an impressive effort.

2007 draftee Jarrah Jacky showed glimpses of the class he has displayed over summer; and Kurt Tippett and David Mackay were excited about their return from serious injuries.

“Yeah, it was amazing, it was a bit of a buzz out there,” 18-year-old Sellar said.

“I didn’t know really what to expect going into it but it was good being up there with blokes like [Brett] Burton, [Simon] Goodwin and [Andrew] McLeod because they look after you.

“The hands were a bit shaky early but the early touches settled the nerves a little bit. The Collingwood boys were getting into me a bit early but I expected that a little bit. But it was certainly a lot quicker and more physical than anything I’ve played before.”

Sellar, Adelaide’s first draft pick in 2006, expects the benefits of the trip to Dubai to linger.

“It’s been amazing … we’ve seen some amazing things. Getting the older guys to mix more with the younger guys … I guess that naturally happens when you are away like this, you have to rely on each other.”

Mackay, also picked by the Crows in the 2006 draft, had his 2007 season ruined by hamstring injuries. He started on the bench on Saturday but once introduced found the ball regularly off half back and a wing.

“It was pretty special,” he said. “I’ve been waiting a fair while now and it was just really surreal early on. I’ve loved it this week, it’s been great, really exciting. Coming together every day has been an experience.

"It’s been challenging in a different environment but I think the boys have handled it really well and stuck together. We are building a pretty good group.”

A shoulder reconstruction end Tippett’s 2007 season but he impressed in the ruck and as a forward in the Dubai win.

“It was my first game since May so it was very good to be out there and I enjoyed it thoroughly,” he said.

“I was very keen to get on and get the first touch but once that happens you settle down a bit. It was very fast early. I was happy enough with my game. Taking that mark and kicking that goal – I was pretty happy about that.”

Jacky, 18, came off the bench as a small forward.

“It was just so quick, that was the main thing I noticed,” he said. “It was great to play and it’s been a fantastic week.”

Mackay's a good player.

He'll play a few this year, and start to consolidate his spot next year IMO - along the same trail as VB and Knights.

I reckon Mackay's debut was one of the best debuts we've had in a long time. He looked far more at ease and had more impact than anyone on debut since Johncock I reckon. Excluding mature aged draftees, that is.

I'll raise you a Ben Rutten.

But apart from that I'm with you. To the people who compared him to Brent Reilly, anyone remember how his first game went?:p

By that logic D-Mac is going to be 10 times better!:thumbsu:

If only...

Mackay definitely had a good debut, I only hope NC decides to give him a bit more game time, that way we might have Rising Star award coming our way:eek: no wait i go over the top, we may have a nomination coming our way, an award would be too much to ask from the AFL.

“We’ve got a young kid called David Mackay. Now, he’s not an elite midfielder at the moment, but I’ve seen him do some things and, even in the elimination final, I saw some movements there that suggested to me he’s going to be an elite-type player” - Neil Craig

Very positive words there from Neil Conservative. If i remember correctly we picked him up with a 3rd rounder in the superdraft - the pick we would have used to secure Gibbs had the AFL not ****ed us around! Could not have asked for a better alternative for a 3rd rounder!

I have to agree with Craig 100%, and wasn't that a good game from him? Loved the goal, probably one of my all time favourites. He's a classy player D-Mack :thumbsu:

David Mackay more than any other on our list is a young player with supreme talent that nobody seems to be aware of outside of Crows fans. You would not think this was his first playing year, and he is only going to get better :)

Shame (or maybe it isn't depending on the way you look at it), but had he been given a bit lot more game time and responsibility, he may have given the Rising Star award a shake, at the very least he would have gotten nominated.

On the few occassions when he was given a decent shot, he stepped up to the plate without so much as looking like taking a backward step. Was held back to a degree this year, perhaps to protect his very slight body, but watch out when he's let off the leash, when he has the ball he just looks way to comfortable with it for a stick insect 19-20 year old.

For all his apparent short comings with first round draft picks, Fanta did know how to pull a few diamonds from the rough with later round draft picks.

I don't mind him not getting the RS though, let him fly under the radar for one more season because you can bet your bottom dollar by 2010 everyone will know who he is! :)

the AFL did not **** us around - they absolutely screwed us:)

but Mackay appears at this stage to be a super pick - its not often we pick up an elite (hopefully) player

Stewart has seen hundreds of players come and go throughout his time as a coach, recruiter and also a development manager, but there’s one current-day Crow who he rates as one of the most impressive: 20-year-old midfielder David Mackay.

“I know that when David did his hamstring against Central Districts in round two, 2007, there was a young man who had quite a few things in his life that weren’t working for him,” Stewart said.

“But his inner strength impressed me greatly. All I did was be there for him as support and as a continual reminder of what he had to do, but he internally had outstanding resilience and resolve to say, ‘no, these things won’t beat me’.

“He came out last season, had a good pre-season and had a very, very good season at AFL level as well. I didn’t convince him he had to do it; what he actually did was demonstrate that he had the qualities to do it.”

Mackay will be a gun :thumbsu: I'm hoping we dont lose him as he imo can step into the elite or A grade level.

2010 is when he will start to standout IMO

mackay is a star, he has great potential:)
& i'm not just saying this because i love him hahaha, but yeah i believe as the years go on he's going to exceed to greater heights and do good for the club

go mackay is all i can say :D !
oh & i heart david mackay !
