Yeah last week watched Taranto closely the Eagles were putting time into him at least at centre clearance.

Rioli being tagged is soo good imo he is untaggable imo he has too much speed to much repeat efforts no one can match him. he still gets 20 touches & his opponent has 8.

You didn't read my post and take it in, I'm not looking for negatives, I'm looking at the way he plays.

Watch how he disposes of the ball, how often does he dribble the ball out of a pack? That is my argument.
When you watch the games closely you will understand.

I did say he turns up to the contest and he kicks goals. so it was not all negative.

TT just doesn't make play as much as he should.

Compared to our GF winning teams.
we had....
prime dusty. supreme playmaker.
prime Edwards. game breaker handballs. finds space from impossible angles.
prime meatball. opens up the game.
prime lambert. same.

All creative players.

TT plays like an adult size 13yo who can kick goals and get to contests. HE is consistent which I admire but
he doesn't choose to make space for himself and open up the play in a creative way.

IF we are talking GF chances then we need some creative talent in the midfield, players who can open up space instead of throwing the ball on their foot to srub it out of a pack which is what TT is doing way too often. That is a big problem and no one has picked it up. we are not going anywhere deep with that sort of play.

If I was making a call id be playing TT away from the center and more towards the forward line if anywhere. or get him to work on his game and take it on by moving out of congestion and using the ball like a player of his pay packet should.

In our GF winning teams a big part of our success, was getting the ball forward by any means possible. What Taranto gives us now is someone who can win the ball at the source and get it going our way immediately. Sure his kicking and ball use could be more damaging in terms of clean possessions, but would it have the same impact that he is having now. He's having a career best year for score involvements, actual goals kicked & score launches. Add to that career best year for clearances, disposals, contested/uncontested possessions, tackles & pressure acts.

To put it another way, Taranto is the type of midfielder that our GF winning teams lacked, a do it all midfielder who not only can do the offensive things well, but is also our best defensive midfielder and it's his defensive work that allows the likes of Bolton and Martin play ahead of the ball and be the damaging ball users you're wanting Taranto to become. The issue is, I don't believe that we have another midfielder capable of playing Tarantos role and moving him away will hurt us more than help us.

I do believe though that we will see a more rounded performance from Taranto in the next couple of years, especially when Hopper gets up to speed and we have better and quicker ball movement and a better F50 structure, that makes the most of the strengths Taranto brings to the side. At the moment we don't quite have the mix right hence people questioning Tarantos performances. It's a valid discussion point and I'm not saying you're wrong in your opinion just so we're clear.

For mine he should be. Seems clear it's out of him and Baker.
The way he carried our busted asses through the early parts of the season under constant media pressure and now kicking goals regularly at key moments just screams leadership to me.

Baker is more of a barometer for the team. I'd prefer Taranto as captain though.

Agree that Grimes shouldn't be captain next year but Nank was arguably the form ruck in the comp before he got injured early in the season. Bake would be a great choice though.

Nankervis has had a tremendous year in the games he has played.

Amongst rucks who have played 10 or more games:

- AFL #1 pressure acts, miles ahead of all other specialist rucks, only hybrid mid Blicavs anywhere near him

- AFL #1 for 1%ers again by a comfortable margin

- AFL #1 for spoils

- AFL #1 for tackles.

In short he is the best pressure and defensive ruck by miles in 2023.

- AFL #8 for score launches

- AFL #13 for score involvements

- AFL #8 for intercept marks

- AFL #6 for ground ball gets

- AFL #4 for intercept possessions

- AFL #11 for contested possessions

- AFL #7 for coaches votes

- AFL #7 for player rating

So in most of these areas Toby is producing around or above AFL average for a ruckman.

In terms of ruckwork:

- AFL #4 for hitouts

- AFL #8 for hitout win%

- AFL #8 for hitouts to advantage

- AFL #23 for hitouts to advantage %


You would say he is more than holding his own in most key areas, but is ahead of his AFL ruck cohort by panels of fencing in terms of his defensive work.

Hopefully who ever becomes coach, decides this early on. Taranto, Baker in any order.
