Braeden Campbell
Braeden Campbell was drafted with the fifth overall pick of the 2020 AFL Draft and has enjoyed an exciting start to life as a Swan. Recruited from Pennant Hills Demons, Campbell is revered for his brilliant versatility and exceptional left-foot kick. He made his AFL debut in Round 1 of the 2021 season and was voted as the Round 2 NAB Rising Star nominee after recording 25 disposals and six marks against the Adelaide Crows. The 21-year-old has improved year on year missing just one match in 2023 and set several career-best performances in the process.
Pick 5

He gets burned too. Saw it at the North game live. Our "stars" trying to do it themselves rather than bring others in.
Bang on, Braeden could have had at least four marks deep near the goal square when we played North, if any of his teammates had thought about kicking it to him.

Personally, I think it's up to the coaching staff to utilise Campbell's talents better, as he has the speed, kicking ability, and coachability/willingness to play almost any role for the side.

If the coaches can't get it to work, then I think it's more on them than Braeden at this point. He's taken longer to get to AFL standard than we would have liked, but he definitely has the right skills to make it as a better-than-average AFL player.

If thats the case, interesting that we decided to match the (very) early bid. Must have been a tough call.
A Covid-affected draft probably made it easier, as we didn't get to glean much of the talent in their final junior season. Max Holmes and Shannon Neale are really the only standout players that I would swap Braeden out for in an instant at this stage of their respective careers.

I'll give you at least 30

At that stage I think we were matching on everyone. Pretty sure Cochran was the first one we passed on.
Also, I'm not sure that Campbell wouldn't have done better under Clarkson. Wouldn't have been playing back pocket and would likely have been a part of chains.

Not alone but this game isn’t a great example.

1q and goes missing
A trait all-too-familiar with most of our squad unfortunately. Starts at the top with our key players and trickles all the way down.

Need a proper leader or two who ensures it doesn't happen.

Start him in the middle and play him there all game next week.

Needs to back himself. The fade out seems mental to me. He works hard running generally, but it’s ineffective and he just is missing most of the game

Would be happy to see him play 50-50 forward and inside Mid. When the game is more chaotic and instinctive, Campbell seems more comfortable which is why I think a bit of inside mid time would be good for him.

If Campbell needs any clues as to how he should be playing, he just needs to watch the games played by Mannagh yesterday and Zac Bailey on Friday. He has just as much, if not more talent than both these guys yet his output is no where near either.
