Draft history: 2006 NAB AFL Draft 2nd round selection (West Coast) No.29 overall traded by the Western Bulldogs for Andrew McDougall.

28/03/09 - rd 1 Vs Brisbane 8/10
Mark down this as the day Eric became a quality AFL key position defender. Called upon to cover Bradshaw and Brown for virtually the whole game, Eric performed extremely well. Brown and Bradshaw kicked a couple of goals, but each was well earned and Mackenzie gave away no freebies. As the game progressed, Eric even took a dash down the wing, had a bounce and delivered a pin-point pass to his forward. With the strength to match Brown body-to-body and the speed to close down a Bradshaw lead, it seems few opponents will have what it takes to be successful against Eric.

05/04/09 - rd 2 Vs Port Adelaide 6/10
Eric had a slightly off game tonight. Certainly not bad, but made some errors that he usually wouldn't. He found himself isolated against Motlop on several occassions and chose the wrong option a few times. Eric needs to learn to clear the area with a spoil. Played very well when called upon to negate larger forwards though. Next week is Saint Kilda and Reiwoldt and Kozi will go into the game in top flight after excellent performances against Adelaide.

11/04/09 - rd 3 Vs St Kilda 7.5/10
With the Eagles losing by 97 pts, West Coast's defence was kept very busy all day. Mackenzie matched up on Reiwoldt for most of the day and the St Kilda forward was prominent for all four quarters. Despite this, Mackenzie shadowed him to all parts of the ground and never gave up. He didn't win many contests, but broke even on numerous occassions. Mackenzie should be satisfied with his individual performance and was clearly one the Eagles best.

19/04/09 - rd 4 Vs Western Bulldogs 8/10
Eric spent the vast majority of this game shadowing Mitch Hahn. Mitch is an extremely powerful runner who hits the ball and is instrumental in the structure of the Bulldog's forward half. Mackenzie played Hahn out of the contest more and more as the game went on. So much so that at stages Hahn found himself in the defensive fwd50. Eric's smother of Eagleton's certain goal typified his commitment on the day. Next week Hawthorn with Buddy and Roughead to contend with. The life of an AFL Key Defender doesn't provide you with many easy weeks.

25/04/09 - rd 5 Vs Hawthorn 6/10
Eric played on Roughead for most of the night and was, for the most part, beaten. Roughead is an extremely powerful leader to the ball and hits the contest with explosive power. Mackenzie was caught behind on a few too many occassions and should have taken front position IMO. Eric was not disgraced though and will be better for the experience. Eric also found himself in trouble when in possession of the ball on several occassions.

There is strong man-love for mackenzie. Went number 1 last year, now number 3 this year.
Glass replacement me thinks.

good to see e-mac have a solid intraculb match and dominate the defence. considering his form at the latter part of the sseason after a pre season ruined by a knee injury, he should play a large role in 09. has good aerobic fitness strength and pace and with a full pre season should become our next top line defender

Great KP prosect, played very well in the intra-club match. Hoping to see him get some games in 2009, maybe he'll be given the CHB duties.

Will be a gun. Was stoked how he 'slid' to us in the 2nd round, and even though he still has a long way to go - his class and ability is already showing.

A few more years in the gym and he will be our next top-line defender no doubt.

lynch i think, towelled him up on some accounts. I wasn't there so feel free to correct me people

Always said that McKenzie is ahead of the quartet of up and coming defenders.
McKenzie >>> Wilkes/Spangher/Brown Spangher might even be trade bait at the end of this year.. especially if Wilkes continues his good form.

Hard to say given browns lack of any game time. But I think McKenzie should be developed for the FB position.

Anyway, his looking big, especially given his lack of size when we drafted him. If Notte can copy McKenzie in the gym then they should compliment each other at other ends of the ground.

I thought this was a good addition to this thread, shows McKenzie in a contest against Buddy Franklin. Going forward you would think he is a decent matchup for him as well, both stand at 196cm. I wonder how many more kilos McKenzie can put on, he gives away five kilos to Buddy who is 101kgs.

definently see mackenzie playing on the athletic forwards this year with glass taking the power forward. as said he has the athletic build, with the good combo of height speed and strength

has also showed a greater capacity to accomodate pressure, last year got a bit panicky and dished off some loose disposals. seems more collected as a player.

will be a very interesting one to watch this year as he is the smokey of our young brigade...

Thanks for the pic EH. Buddy certainly was a handful for Eric and Brown. Buddy is 22 atm and Eric of course turns 21 in a couple of months.

I expect in another 12 months Eric will be ready to take on and destroy the biggest and best key position forwards in the comp. He'd have to be a good chance to play on Brown and Bradshaw at various stages round 1, which will be a fantastic test for him and he should learn a lot from it.

List assessment: West Coast

WHILE star recruit Nicholas Naitanui is sidelined, West Coast is bullish about its crop of improving youngsters. With the Eagles on the rebound from a dispiriting 2008, assistant coach Peter Sumich rates the list for afl.com.au.

SENIOR LIST

Eric Mackenzie
Hopefully he has a good final hit-out and puts his hand up for round one, but that's looking good. We eventually expect him to back Glassy up down there and help out big time.

EMac is a dead set gun.

I don't understand the hype on Paddy Ryder.. Mackenzie is so much better!

He held his own against two of the best forwards in the comp. Future looks good. :thumbsu:

yeah, I think that's the thing about Eric. He didn't set the world on fire when he first came in, he just played tightly and concentrated on ensuring his opponent doesn't get any easy possessions. He's continued on with that each game he played last year and so far this season.

I can see him becoming a lot more creative in the future, but for now shutting down experienced, quality key position forwards is a very good start.

I did see him go for one run forward against Brisbane in the second half, he was quick and delivered the ball lace out. I was impressed with his kicking, he almost "looks facially" like a tall version of Judd from some angles.

Thought the same thing... :)

great game by eric today. 17 disposals. now leads the afl in 1% which shows a selfless attitude.

was up against roo and didnt look out of place.
