great game by eric today. 17 disposals. now leads the afl in 1% which shows a selfless attitude.

was up against roo and didnt look out of place.

Despite the accolades he's been getting I still think his game was underrated today. Unbelievable workrate to keep up with the fittest KPF in the AFL, especially when his team was thrashed by almost 100 points.

Our next All Australian CHB.

pwns hard.
Mackenzie and brown. Sounds like a 1970's crimefighting duo.
" Mackenzie and Brown, fighting evil, one KP forward at a time "

Very good.

Brown would be the one that gets all the girls and Mackenzie would come up with the plans.

This week on Mackenzie and Brown... the boys are asked to judge the local bikini contest when crime stikes...

CONFIDENCE has been behind West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie's breakout season – confidence in his own ability and having the confidence of his coaches when he's handed big jobs.

They don't get much bigger for a 21-year-old who started the season with eight games to his name; matching up on Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown (Brisbane Lions) in round one, Daniel Motlop (Port Adelaide) a week later and Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda) and Jarryd Roughead (Hawthorn) since.

But the ongoing responsibility assigned by coach John Worsfold and backline mentor Daniel Metropolis is the reason Mackenzie's enjoying his footy so much.

"It's done a lot, because they believe in me to fill that key position," Mackenzie told westcoasteagles.com.au.

"It gives me confidence when they give me the big blokes to play on. That shows they've got a lot of confidence in me and it gives me the confidence to go out there and play.

"You only learn from playing on the best, so I want to keep getting those roles."

No opponent has taught Mackenzie more this season than Riewoldt, who delivered something of a tutorial on hard work in round three.

Mackenzie names the star Saint among a handful of players he followed closely as a junior and says he took plenty out of the early-season duel.

"If you told me before the game he'd only kick one goal I would have taken it, but the fact he had 27 possessions was a bit disappointing," Mackenzie said.

"There were a lot of learning points that came out of it, which was the main thing. We all got belted but there were things I learned for when I play on him next time.

"Just how hard he works, it just shows you what you need to do to be up there with those players."

Playing as a key defender wasn't always the plan for Mackenzie. A midfielder and forward at junior level, he tried his hand as a backman just a year before he was drafted in 2006.

Now in his third season at West Coast he says he's locked into the post and is getting plenty out of playing alongside skipper Darren Glass.

"He's one of the best defenders in the league and there's been plenty of learning off him. He's very good at teaching," Mackenzie said.

"Then there's others like (Matthew) Scarlett at Geelong that I get a lot out of watching."

If confidence has been the key to Mackenzie's season so far, then it faced an almighty test in a tense final minute against the Swans in round eight.

A miscued short pass from the otherwise composed defender was cut off by Kieren Jack, who sealed a five-point win for the Swans. However, Mackenzie was quick to move on.

That's when life outside of football helps keep the West Australian's mind clear, with a business degree taking over after a year of studying human movement.

But with his path off-field still taking shape, Mackenzie says he's more than happy to quietly go about his business on it.

"That's probably the role of the defender in a sense, just to go about your job quietly," he said.

"We've got a pretty good back six down there and we're getting a lot of chemistry between us. Hopefully in the next four or five years we can play 100 games together and get a premiership."
