Not many superstar mids at 197cms

Usually they lack speed, agility and evasiveness at that size and rely on strength. But i havent seen smillie get dirty and win contested ball.

Not saying he cant do it, but at 197cms...
Until bontempelli (192) and Cripps(195) came along that could have been said about them

Could even use Nank as an example, he is a great player not because of his ruck craft, it’s his clearance and inside work that really elevates him

He effectively plays as an extra mid when he’s in beat mode and easily wracks up his 20 odd possies

A massive part of Smillies game is his elite kicking. The kid has no trouble finding the ball. He will not fail as long his body holds up. FFS relax

What I liked about his junior tapes was every time he got a possession it would be an i50 entry that was his instinct , no dinky sideways chips , here’s hoping he gets on the park sooner than later

What are his strengths?
Welcome Josh Smillie

Imagine the 4 big boys Lalor, Smillie, Cumming and McAuliffe all get a decent run at it this year and average 30-50% CBA's each.

Daicos be like yeah....nah, I'll just jump out of the way and pretend I got a bad bounce.

He’s strong through the hips and not lanky which becomes more rare the taller you get. As long as his body allows him to bend enough to pick the ball up he’ll become a gem.

Dyl Alexander did a great video analysis on this point in his draft year, basically pointing out that he statistically has an elite ground ball game ala similarly tall mids like Cripps, Bont, Green

He’s obviously grown a bit since then but hopefully not so much that it impacts that part of his game

Spoke to a mate who is connected with a few people in the know and said he is going to be a jet possibly best pick of the bunch.

Hopefully. But I'll wait with expectations of him this year.

If he ends up better than Lalor then we will have two A+ mids.
