in the same article on the rfc website today it said this

"Progress has been slow for the 197cm inside midfielder, who has grown a few centimetres since being drafted, but Smillie is aiming to be ready to play at either level by the Round 1 clash against Carlton on March 12. "

If he's ready round 1 we will all be on here saying what's the hurry.

Moot point anyway because he's a month or so in the VFL before even considered.

Needs to come back via vfl anyway I would think. No chance of afl debut I would think.

Don’t worry, the normal sooks will whinge that he isn’t in the AFL team but will also sook if we do pick him and he gets injured

We need to calm the truck down - if he's playing AFL around the mid-year bye after a few VFL games then that's fine by me.

We don't need to look too far for comfort and good reason to be patient with some injury afflicted players:

Grimes: 8 games in first 2 x years and just 26 in first 4 x years.

Astbury: 41 games in first 6 x seasons.

Tom Brown: 1 game in his first 2 x seasons.

Then there's:

Hayden Young: 13 x games in first 2 x seasons (ironically also a pick #7)

Rowell: 17 games in first 2 x seasons

D Moore: 54 x games in first 4 x seasons

Gawn: 4 x games in first 2 x years. 39 games in first 5 years.

Salem: 30 x games in first 3 x seasons

LDU: 30 x games in first 3 x seasons

Xerri: 33 x games in first 6 x seasons

Curnow: 62 x games in first 6 x seasons

Waterman: 42 x games in first 5 x seasons

We all just need to calm the feck down. There's oodles of time if he's got the talent.

If he’s fully fit injury wise and plays in the preseason games (and does alright), you would hope he is seriously considered for a round 1 debut. 5 on the bench so you can carry a player likely to only get 60% TOG. I’d love to see him and Gibcus in our round 1 team.

The thing I think is really important with Smillie is to see how he goes at AFL level sooner rather than later. He has unique elite attributes that could be a game changer for our midfield. We need to to see what that looks like at AFL.

Just depends probably has a bit of competition for that last bench spot now that we have Cumming as well and that’s before we look at guys like Kmac2 who should get a look first imo

Our other draftees might surprise as well

Everyone needs to lower their expectations re: Smillie.
1) Young players need 2-3 full pre-seasons before they hit peak fitness. I expect it won't be until 2027 before we see anything other than a cameo from Smillie in the midfield.
2) He's got potential, but he's done nothing yet. Don't assume he's a modern-day Bont or Cripps. He could be another RCD for all we know.

He could be great. He could be a bust. We'll see.

Hasn't been a more divisive player round these parts since David gourdis (according to this board, the most athletic player the game has ever seen).

Kmac2 is who I am hoping gives himself first crack at a b22 round 1 spot. Like that he can hit the scoreboard.

Balance I think is also going to be very important.

"Progress is slow" and he's right on track.

Oh well, when he starts kicking the ball again I hope all is well. If he can play a month or more of good VFL he'll get his AFL debut. He'll have earnt it and hopefully will start to play the footy we know he can.
