I posted this elsewhere but will repost here in its own thread.

Probably the best WW1 movie to bring home the horror of the Western Front finally.
But something was missing that took the film to that emotional level
because the brother died too soon

I didn’t come out feeling emotionally shattered as I did at Saving Pte Ryan, The Thin Red Line, or even Gallipoli that I saw as a 12 year old.

I can remember sitting around at the end of Gallipoli watching as all of these grown elderly men weeping and thinking now, 40 years on, that some could have been the last of WW1 Vets or have known men who did not return.

None of these two classes of men are alive today.

That would have been a monumental film to carry out, have to respect Mendes and the team who made it happen.

Maybe it’s just not my genre, because while I loved the one shot nature of the film, thematically and dramatically it just really felt like every other war film for me. I suppose it was more immersive than normal but apart from that it didn’t quite reach the heights for me it seems like it has for most other viewers. Definitely can see the appeal but I just don’t like the genre much.

Having said that I really liked that Will Schofield finally received the recognition he deserved, so close to retirement too.

7/10

From a technical point of view the production of the continuous shot style was outstanding. You have to get so many things right for it to work. The tracking, framing and focus of the camera over long sequences. The actors' dialog and movements. The set design has to be universal rather than piecemeal. The sound recording has to be perfect as the actors traverse the large set. I will be looking out for the 'making of 1917' videos to see how they did it.

The one take style forces you into a linear storyline that takes place over a couple of hours. The script has to set the pacing, with the editing very sparse. They cheated a little when the guy lost consciousness but the writers did a great job in that respect.

Another brilliant score by Thomas Newman.

I'm not sure if it was the script or the casting but I could have cared a little more about the main characters. And once I realised the makers were going for the continuous shots I was a little distracted as I was looking for where they were going to splice the shots. Both only minor quibbles. I will certainly watch this movie multiple times. I definitely preferred it to Dunkirk.

It's been a while since I gave an 8/10.

The inability to develop the rapport between the two soldiers robbed this film of being a masterpiece
Had the 3/4 of the film focussed on them relating stories and developing, the death would have resonated more. Instead it was effectively a sad moment of him dying lost against the bigger mission

Exceptionally made, especially the scenes in the first half of the film.

I agree that the brother died too early on in the piece and without enough character development for me to feel any empathy for the situation. I didn't feel any real sense of dread from the main character when he died given that 5 minutes earlier he was going on about 'why did you have to choose me?'. There needed to be more character deveopment before the death, or left it until towards the end when he died. Other than that, it was a great film

Loved this film. Will win best picture Oscar with a leg in the air.

So many gripping scenes. Been waiting a while for a movie to blow me away and here it is.

Thought a drone would have Ben doing most of the filming but apparently only when he fell down the waterfall, and apparently he wasn’t meant to run into other soldiers in that climatic scene at the end, but they left it in the film.

Think it's more style over substance.

Out of the nominees I'd personally have it behind Joker, Jojo Rabbit and Once Upon. Have heard great things about Parasite, the Irishman and Marriage Story too.

It does look like a 1917 defeats Parasite situation for the upcoming Oscars. The others have underperformed at the precursors and guilds and won't do quite as well with preferential ballots and general audiences.

Absolutely correct

Really good film but not one I’ll think of as one of the classics of the era.

Technically great but one of the problems with making a film effectively one shot is that the narrative is very compressed. An awful lot happened in a short space of time
(even allowing the break) and Schofield cheated death one too many times for my liking.

Still, one of the better films I’ve seen this year. It’s interesting that there’s renewed interest in WW1. Glad it wasn’t too graphic - brutal but not over the top.

If Deakins doesn’t win his second, consecutive Oscar for this film there should be a riot.

I just found myself entwined with 1917. Obviously i'm being biased with the cinematography over the two movies.

Ryan has great cinematography
The beach scene
The sniper scene
The Radar scene- the story behind this and the spontaneity of how Spielberg got around this is a story in itself
The Tower fight
The Town scene

it was not shot in 1 scene, There might have been bits where they shot maybe 30 or 40 mins but you can see many definite cuts where it goes black or they move past a rock.
I think this movie will not age well, It was cliched and soppy and dare i say stupid in spots and if it wins the oscar for best film it would be a travesty. If Parasite was in English it would win with a leg in the air. I do think Mendes is a chance for best director though as technically it was brilliant
