Howd did it actually start??? Anyone got any footage other than the game day tv coverage??? Did Browny hit someone and Daniher square up???
It was a long time ago and the memory is not great, other than i remember saying to all the people at the BBQ i was at that we would not take that from Essendon, and would kill them. We had a lot of hard arses back then.

There were differing stories about who started the fight.

Craig Kelly and Paul Salmon were in a "tussle" before any of it began.

And as for Brown, he ran from the half forward line flat out to tackle an Essendon player (wasn't a king hit or even a hit), so Daniher being the scum that he always has been decided to knock our most in form player out.

You have to remember up to that point in the GF, it looked like Rowdy was about to cut Essendon apart again, that's the only reason Daniher knocked him out, and he did the same thing in the 3rd when Starcevich started to explode, he knocked him out too.

I was on the other side of the ground when the fight broke out (I was in the Olympic Stand), so I didn't see the start of it.

The fight and game was great, but what I really remember is what happened after wards.

Thanks, guys. Those pics brought a tear to an old magpies eye. It seems other footage may be very rare.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

craig kelly and paul van der haar were going at it in the forward pocket.
van der haar was having an alistair lynch grand final moment.
he realised it was to be his last game, he realised kelly and the pies had his and essendons measure so he TRIED to rattle our cages.

but he wasnt even able to do that!

the flying dutchman had lost his wings:thumbsu:. kelly was grappling with him, tony shaw, michael christian and gavin crosisca were pretty much the first ones over there to help Ned. not that he needed it.

then when derek kickett, michael long and paul salmon got there it was on for young and old.

gavin brown who had just kicked the goal to get us in front for the first time was one of the slowest to get there as the fight was in essendons forward pocket, but when he got there he did bowl someone over, then terry daniher went nuts and it went off from there.

funniest moment was when you watched the game on tv and it showed damien monkhorst with derek kickett in a headlock. can only imagine what monkey said....he didnt have a great history when it came to racial abuse did he??

anyway, all that was the precursor to my greatest moment as a collingwood supporter! (until 25/9/2010 of course:thumbsu:)

I was sitting ground level Southern stand side b/w wing and HFF, scuffles had broken out along that part of the ground so it was hard to see everyone involved

The closest scuffle to us was where sporn was involved

Browny came flying in after it started at 100 miles an hour with Daniher right on his tail. Gav jumped into Sporn strongly but didnt appear to throw anything. Daniher let go with a massive round arm right from direcly behind Brown

A classic king hit and I suspect pre meditited as they ran up the ground. It was a cowardly weak act from a player who I up until then had admired for the type of game he played. Hard but fair. I think he took the cynical view that it was a GF so anything went

I wonder if he regrets it now

As an aside I was given a Collingwood book as a gift a few years later, signed by the players and with a big insciption from Brown who organised it. Some one had a link at the AFL and arranged it for me.

Daniher was also working there also so he has written another paragraph extolling Essendons virtues

A good piece of memorabilia

I'm sure TD regrets it. It was completely out of character for him and, having been on that wing in the middle of a Collingwood pack, I can say for sure that he chased Brown up field as Gav flattened Sporn. Remember that Sporn was one of the youngest players on the ground and also remember that what Gav did was enough to get HIM 3 matches, so let's not get too carried away with the angelic references. Essendon were spent by Grand Final day; they had injuries to Madden that hadn't healed, despite the week off after the replay between the Eagles and the Pies and they had lost steam in that break. The Pies were hot and the Bombers frustrated-TD was the leader and, let's face it, from an 'old school' footy family. Let's not discount the couple of hundred brilliant other games he played. He'd have kicked a hundred as a roving forward in the year he did his knee (53 goals in 8 games), early on, so he had a bit gojng on. Double premiership captain-not many Pies can claim that over the last 50 years.

Sorry but TD's act was one of the lowest things I've seen in footy. He can regret it all he likes but he won't be getting any forgiveness from me.

This morning I slowed down the footage using a video editor and it's very hard to tell but I believe the initial scuffle was between Sporn and a Collingwood player that I'm struggling to make out. Judging from the hair I'd say it was Crosisca. Kelly was in a few seconds later as he has always said. Sporn was holding the Collingwood player down in a wrestling manouver so it's nearly impossible to see. What you can see a little later in the footage is that when they eventually break from their wrestle, they walk over toward the melee and Sporn throws a gutless haymaker king hit at him from behind and that's when Rowdy goes in to remonstrate. Obviously it was only a second or two later that TD threw his gutless king hit. Two low acts in a couple of seconds! Just what you'd expect from that scum.

Unfortunately the footage I have was long ago converted to WMV and the bitrate is pretty low so I'll have to find a DVD of it and have a better look but ultimately it looks very much to me that the two players who started it were Sporn and Crosisca.

Never knew TD to put a foot wrong before that and really soured my view of him as a player and human being. The rights or wrongs of it can be debated until the cows come home but what is indisputable is that it was Essendons final attempt to snuff out the Pies. Already simmering, the low act of deliberately king hitting our most effective forward on the day ignited the Pies and they came out after that breathing fire.

What is not so much remembered nowadays is Sheedy's demeanour when still a player for Richmond, a niggler and a sniper but always behind the play and safe from the umpire's veiw. A great coach but despised him as a player. I wonder if the word came out directly from him before the melee? Not saying it did but knowing Sheedy's sniping ways while playing I definitely wouldn't be surprised.

Believe it or not it was Dennis Banks that Sporn king hit and not Crossisca!

Keiran Sporn must of had a death wish or something because there were not too many who would have thought about taking on Banks because he could really handle himself,Brown himself was pretty good but not much you can do when you don,t see it coming and as somebody else recalled Daniher knocked out Starcevic at 1 min mark of 3 qtr mind you he was at least front on to Danaher.

Well he hit him from behind and Banks was actually pretty dazed as you can imagine. I imagine Sporn must thank his lucky stars that he managed to walk off that ground.

My favourite part in the fight was where Kickett was shaping up to Shane Morwood (hardly our most threatening player). Millane comes in and pushes Morwood out of the way. Kickett couldn't backpedal fast enough. Even with a broken hand Millane terrified him!

I love browny as much as the next guy, but if you look closely at what he did, he landed one on an Essendon player from behind. I got it all here on tape. If I could upload it I would. Trust me I love Browny but both he and TD did things out of character that day.

I was at the game and when I saw Browny down, I thought we were gone. Turns out it fired us up. It all started from just a push and shove, just a lot of emotion and I think Essendon knew we had 'em unless they went the hit.

The difference between Brown and Daniher on the day was the second hit from Daniher, it was that second act that was worst then the first.

His hit on Starcevich in the third quarter was disgraceful, it was an open field king hit that ko'ed a player who was in contention for the Norm Smith Medal at that stage of the game.

You can almost forgive anyone for hitting a player during an all in brawl, but an open field hit like that was disgusting, and for that I will never forgive Daniher.

Having said that, if he had not have ko'ed both, we may not have won, as at both stages he Ko'ed players we were looking a bit shaky, so maybe we all owe the prick, just a little bit.

Browny didn't strike Sporn though, but he certainly did barrell straight through him from behind.

Ahhh, that explains it. My video is a bit grainy and for most of it Sporn is over the top of him wrestling before they break apart and Sporn walks up behind and king hits him. The latter bit was a wide shot and too far away to make out on my video.

What Brown did wasn't even in the same ballpark as either Sporn or Daniher. Brown was coming in as Sporn king hit Banks from behind and his shirtfront (shirtback?) at least showed that he had some regard for Sporn's welfare albeit precious little. What Sporn and Daniher did could have resulted in almost anything as far as outcome goes and as far as I'm concerned both of them were gutless digusting acts. So pathetic was Daniher he wasn't finished when he'd KO'd Brown and went on to repeat the dose on an unsuspecting Starcevic. If he had remorse then he sure as hell had a funny way of showing it. Nope, there was definitely no guilt in his mind and I can't imagine how anyone would suggest it. The only thing he regretted was getting rubbed out by the tribunal.

Daniher definitely deserved the 13 he got for both incidents I remember Just before Brown came back on in either 3 or 4 qtr Manson went and stood Daniher and Daniher was unmarked but the next time the camera panned on them Daniher had a little blood trickling from the nose and about 2 or 3 mins later Brown came back on and went staight on to Daniher and was remonstrating with.

It was after that GF that the 2 teams played again in London about a week later in a demonstration game and the Pies won that as well and did,nt Millane say to Sheeds even drunk you still could ,nt beat us,great days indeed.

Ps I have that game on VHS but it,s cloudy now and I can no longer view it but it was fantastic to win that day and it made up for 84 in my mind.:thumbsu:

Get over it! If there was a post on the main board about Banks 'King hitting' Rhys Jones , Swan whacking a cab driver or Monkey racially abusing Long would you be just as forthright in your condemnation of those incidents? I doubt it.

Mate this is the Collingwood board where we complain about the others not about each other and complaining about Rhys Jones well mate if you were watching back then you would know he wacked plenty of blokes and often with no provocation.

lol. WTF has any of that got to do with it? Get over yourself and recognise that in a discussion about the 1990 Grand Final brawl I'm going to make comment on the things that happened... strangely enough... during the 1990 grand final brawl. I couldn't give a fat rats clacker in context about things that did not happen during that match and don't get me started about Rhys Jones. I think you'd do well to take a chill pill and re-read the thread title.
