We should have won it that year. One of the strongest teams EVER to miss the premiership. Luckily we made up for it in '92+'94.

Sumich kick his 111 goals that year, yet uncredibly missed out on the Coleman medal. I think he was 3rd overall in the goalkicking. Woosha started his captaincy, and Jakovich made his debut (i think).

Was a great year for the eagles.

Yeah, I went. God, what a black day. Literally, because the game started quite late at Subi, and was pretty overcast anyway - there seemed to be a real prospect of the game finishing in the dark.

Can't remember much about the game itself, except that we were quite outclassed in the end, and that Dunstall kicked a swag to finish us.

My copy of "Soaring" has a memento of that era (but not that day) folded in the front cover - a Craig Turley mask. Perfect for scaring the kiddies.

The very same mask that came free in the paper (I think)? The very same mask that Malthouse had the papers stop from printing because it placed undue pressure on one of his players? :)

That's the one. They had these Eagle logo ones too, which were supposed to replace the Turley one.

But imagine if they'd actually had 20,000 waving Turleys - the horror!

I think the Hawthorn players would have shat their pants before the ball was even bounced ;)

91 was a good year for us really, Hawthorn were the better team simply in the finals, beating us twice. They had a lot of good quality players still, probably helped our squad toughen up and adjust to the level of finals footy. Ultimately helped us win in 92 and 94 I reckon.

Anyone from the board go to the Qualifying Final at Subi? Care to share their memories?

I was there I think. That was the game that Brereton went down injured to the delight of the crowd wasn't it (Well to the delight of everyone on the hill around me anyway)?

I remember the Eagles were close enough all day, but just couldn't get into gear - Very frustrating. :(

1991.....the awakening of a giant.

12 wins in a row...losing the 13th game by 3 points against Carlton.

Turley's stellar year finishing up 2nd in the brownlow.

Chris Lewis and his biting charges

McIntosh, White and Jakovich debut
David Hynes debuts from Port Adelaide (SANFL)

Sumich kicks 111 goals and becomes the only left footer in the history of VFL / AFL to kick 100 in a season

Lamb first Eagle to play 100 games for the club.

First out of Victoria final. West coast hot favourites to win, but get beaten by Hawthorn.

First GF for WC
Lose game by huge margin after kicking the first 4 goals of the match. 10 points behind at 3/4 and looking lost going into the last quarter.

I cried when they lost....:(

They say Perth was deserted GF day '92, what about 91?

Was the same in 1991 as well.

I used to live on Newcastle St back in the glory days, in a 6 storey building of flats, I was on the 5th floor and had a great view of the freeway and of Loftus and Newcastle St.

Trust me, when those grand finals were on, there were about 2 cars on ALL those roads at any one time.

Wow, I work around the corner there for 15 years....may have walked past each other sometime....

I was watching the '92 game with my (then) girlfriend, and we left at half time (or just before) to go to the Royal Show because the Eagles were struggling and my gf was bored. Bythe time we got off the train at the showgrounds there were announcements every 2 minutes and by the time we got inside the Eagles had just about hit the front.

We ended up in a furniture display area with about 200 other people crammed around a couple of 34cm TVs. It was an incredible atmosphere, and there was absolutely no-one in the streets wandering around.

I'll never forget the cheer when "Matera set sail for home"

To be honest, I can remember more about queuing for the tickets than I can about the game itself!

All I remember is it was raining and we lost!

The only other thing I remember about that particular finals series is that my hockey team made the GF that year as well, which was scheduled for the same day as the AFL GF. Our captain was a mad Hawthorn supporter, and he single-handedly organised for our GF to be played on the Wednesday night instead of the Saturday so we didn't miss the game! (We lost 1-0 in the last minute of extra time - and like the Eagles we'd only been beaten 2 or 3 times for the year! :( )

Worked for a manufacturing agency on Loftus Street.

Was the best place I ever worked for.
