Any thoughts on what the first week on t.v will look like ie. Which 3 games Foxtel would get?

I would think it will be:

Port Adelaide v Kangaroos,
West Coast v Fremantle,
Sydney v Brisbane

I think we will know 6 weeks before the season as I think the t.v networks nominate the games they want 6 weeks ahead and then Foxtel get the scraps.

All Port and Crows games will be on free to air TV in Adelaide so i don't know if they will just have the foxtel broadcasts if the free to air networks don't choose to cover them.

Wouldn't be the same 3 games in every city would it?
For example, Sydney v Brisbane would attract huge interest here and in Queensland (especially being Plugger's comeback game), so I think they'd want it to be a free-to-air game there; although it may be designated a Foxtel game for Melbourne.

I'd really like to know HOW this is going to work. It would have to be different games on Pay TV in different cities as Bomber Spirit mentioned.

This is because all Freo and Eagles games must be on Free to air in Perth, all Crows and Port games on Free to air in Adelaide, Swans must be free to air in Sydney and Lions in Brisbane.

What I would like to know is how Pay Tv will manage to do this. Are they able to broadcast different games to different cities or not? I mean in perth I have satellite, and as such everything is on three hours earlier. So we see movies at 5.30 pm instead of 8.30 pm like those in the Eastern States. As this is the case how will they be able to show different AFL games if they don't currently have the technology to show the movies which are advertised at 8.30 but actually beamed into Perth homes at 8.30?

They're putting in a new system that will enable them to have networked coverage to each AFL state.

Porthos, I am sceptical about all this. Please see my post in the free -to -air thread.

If everyone would get to see their own teams games either on free tv or by attending in their home town, what would be the attraction of foxtel ?

Clearly it is better than seven's recent coverage but the networks have paid much more for it. If they aren't trying to 'persuade' us to buy foxtel then wheres the money coming from ?

The other games, and the fact that you get uninterrupted coverage.

A West Coast fan in Adelaide or Sydney would want Foxtel.

A Bulldogs fan in Melbourne who knows they'll have games bumped to Foxtel because they're on at the same time as Essendon would want Foxtel.

A Carlton fan in Brisbane would want Foxtel.

Anyone that wants to see what happens immediately after a goal is kicked would want Foxtel.

Anyone that likes to watch all the footy wants Foxtel.

Anyone that doesn't like going to a lot of games (and there are heaps otherwise TV rights would be very low) will want Foxtel, even if they could just go and see the match at Optus Oval anyway.

The important thing to note is that not every Victorian fan will get to see their team play on FTA. Its ok for cities with two teams or less.....

People who want to see replays of their games up to 4 times a week instead of buying replays at $40 a pop, want Foxtel. That is one of the key reasons we are getting FFC. The opportunity to see a full replay of your game instead of highlights or 20 min of footage on a Sat. evening or Sun afternoon, plus a 24/7 Footy channel is a dream come true for any footy fan.

Help...Pls. someone....

I have been trying to get onto Foxtell...its been constantly engaged...so can anyone help in the meantime with some prices for changeover from Optus...if anyone else has had to do the same.

I am a bit loathe to change to Foxtell as we enjoy Optus at home because it also has the full 4 days of rugly league non-stop and as we all love our league...its going to be hard not to get the same sort of coverage on Foxtel....has anyone Foxtell that is also interested in rugby league that can tell me about their coverage also....

I am disappointed that Foxtell took afl as last year was perfect having the r/l and afl together.
Optus did not have the rugby union matches, though, just club rugby....

Would be great if you could get an outlet that could give you everything you want re sport.

Cheers and thanks if anyone can help.:D

Ms Storm, based on last year, you will get plenty of league on Foxtel.

Annoyingly, they can't show the games live that 9 are showing live into Sydney, even though 9 aren't showing them live in Melbourne. But you get plenty of replays of every game each week and some live games as well.

As well as live Rugby League games in Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2 & Fox 8, Fox Sports 2 replays every game from the round back to back so I think that should be adequate Ms Storm. Plus I think they have a panel review/preview show during the week.

Ms Storm,

Optus will have AFL coverage this season so you don't need to change over. It will be similar to the NRL channel that runs from Friday to Monday on Channel 15. You'll get the 3 live games Fox Sports shows and all the replays of the other games.

The AFL channel will be on Channel 13.

How do you know that the AFL channel is going to be on Optus? Nothing has been said about it. Do you know anything else 'the game' about the Optus coverage, such as cost?

I was on a Australian Satilite/Pay tv site in November last year and they had an article about AFL coverage. They said Foxtel and Optus had come to an agreement that Fox Sports would provide a live feed and replays of games to Optus. I think the channel will be of no extra charge provided you have sports package.

I must point out that the AFL channel on Optus won't be the "Fox Footy Channel".

I guess I'll find out more information when the TV guide comes next month.

The agreement isn't there yet.
