What type of player should we get with our first pick in the draft?
I think we need a big bodied backman like hurley would be great if we could get him.
I dont want to see us get another midfielder in the draft we have a good midfield forming with Foley, Cotchin, Deleido.
We have Hughes and Riewoldt in the forward line with Hughes looking like he could be a big target in the next 2-3 years and Morton who can play tall or short.

I think, as Coggarules said in another thread, we need a star forward who can turn games and win them off his own back. We've got, imo, the backline just about right, with maybe a decent small defender missing, but the KPF's are the match winners, and we are sadly lacking in genuine game turning match winners!

I'm not going to nominate a type, cos it depends where we finish, what draft pick we get and who's available at our selection... as well as what the guys on our list show by the end of the year.
If Hurley or Watts were available we'd be mad not to take them, but they probably won't be. Trengove is apparently another KP prospect, while I like the sound of Heyne, Sidebottom and Ziebell.

Agree with coach. Take the best possible pick first up. If you look for a specific pick in the first round, you could knowingly undersell yourself by 3 or 4 picks just to get that player. Not that that necessarily means your pick won't be as good as his draft number suggests, but in the first round you've got to maximise your chances of getting the best possible player. Second round, when the players left are less distinguished from each other, then make a play for a certain position providing there is a player worthy of going there or thereabouts.

Ziebell and Trengrove i'v herd of can u give us a bit of info if u could.
cheers in advance

Best available player at that pick.

Sorry mate ! how about your second pick of 2005 National Draft ...RT the star?????

Isnt Rance a big backman?

I would have thought so...

But you know how it is ... doesn't dominate in year 1, so can't be any good.

Just like the need for a key forward...Yeah, Hughes is all of 20, obviously wont make it, so lets throw our first pick at finding a replacement. Rucks? yeah, there are so many better 21 year old ruckmen than Patto out there he can't be any good. Dump him...next!

-----------

We're (finally) in a decent position where there are no glaring weaknesses that wont ( potentially ) be filled by kids already in the system.

As such, we have 2 criteria for recruiting.

1) Where do we need more depth ( either due to doubts about current stocks or just that it's good to have more, like the midfield ).

2) Going for the quality. Either a genuine 'best available' pick, or someone who has a lot of potential, but question marks over attitude ( or similar )...In the past we needed to go the 'safe' bet ( eg, Tambling over Buddy ), now we can afford to take more risks.

I'm with Telsor. Plenty of potential in all areas on the list at the moment. That doesn't mean all will become senior stars though.

The recruiting and scouting guys have to stay true to their draft board and select the best available talent at whatever position we might finish in.

Hardest task will be identifying the 5 or 6 that will be de-listed at season end to make way for them. If the this year's draft is as deep as people say we need to take advantage by going 5 or 6 rounds in.

IIRC Hughes was our second pick in that draft...?
What about your 2nd pick of that draft which, i might add, was before our first pick, Beau Dowler the star!!!
How many games have you pumped into him?
Will he ever play?
...Great pickup, ay?

Best available. Every side needs a big forward who can win games off his own boot but just because a kid is tall and taken in the top 10 doesn't mean he will do this on a regular basis in the AFL. I wouldn't be to upset if we took another midfielder with our first pick. Axel, Deledio, Cotchin is a good start but with rotations as they are another gun mid would be very handy. Cleve, Riewoldt, Morton is the nucleus of a good forward line. Hopefully Collard can replace Browny. Shulz (if he isn't traded) and hopefully Polak can make a full recovery and also come into the mix as possible tall options.

in 2 years deledio ,tambling ,cotchin ,foley ,white , will all be guns
add to that connors ,collins ,casserly ,all developeing
it also looks like we have ample players to run thriugh the midfield in
tuck ,newman , king ,raines ,brown & coggs if he gets going.

our midfield wont be our problem.
the foward line needs more depth, currently we have richo as the only gun
then hughes ,reiwoldt as our only big fowards with putt & patto as pinch hitting ruck/fowards.
shultz it looks like either will be traded, if not will be a utility at best.
gourdis could become anything, but looks like they are determined to turn him into a defender.

so we have only 2 kpf on our books.
we are desperate for a large/big 195+ gun foward

the big fowards that seem to be mentioned in this years draft are
mckernan , watts , trengove.

we must get at least 1 & hopefully 2 big kpf & 1 ruckman with our first 3 picks , and a small defender with our 4th or 5th pick

we should keep only collard on our rookie list & delist silvester, howat, cartledge they are all only vfl standard.

we need to rookie another small defender & 2 developing ruckman

the 5 players that should be traded or shown the door to make room are.
pettifer.................traded we should get a 3rd round or upgrade 2nd pick
hyde....................upgrade our 4th or 5th pick
patto and 1 of the picks we get for the above players for warnock
tivendale....... i doubt we would get anything so delist
and 1 of the following
myer ,jackson, bowden ,coggs, if he is injured again

The best BIG Bloke available;
When it is our turn we need to pick the best from this lot- Watts (go before our pick GUN), Hurley (best Key defender, doesnt get beaten one on one. Made all Aust last year bottom age), Mckernan (Ruck Key Forward), Trengrove( hurt knee & hamstring out for the year, because of this he go lower first round, Ruck KPP), Lewis Johnson (if he nominates, CHF, leading contested mark in under 18 carnival only 17)
If we finish 11 or 12 we could have a chance in getting Hurley or McKernan. Lets take it.
Richo was asked the question last night on the couch. What do Richmond need, his reply was KPP!
Quality KPP are hard to get from second round onwards, you can still get tough, skillfull midfielders with pick 2 or 3. And thats what we need.
This years draft has a lot of depth about it, i believe the big blokes will go very early which will push the mids back a bit therefore giving us a chance to pick up a decent mid with our second pick.

Sorry I am just a fan, i didnt see your Post.
BUT YOU ARE SO SPOT ON!
Add Steel Sidebottom in your Midfield! GUn, class, bottom age, poise, and winning most contested ball in under 18 championship.
Kick 50 plus on both feet, this kid will make it big time in AFL.
However we need talls!

AGREED BUT DOES MILLER AND RECRUITERS? DOUBTFUL

Wallace and Jackson and Cameron have never developed any talls of note. Big problem. :thumbsd:

Thanks gents: Delids and Ruanaidh :thumbsu: :). We have a few holes. I believe it is best we finish lower than Essendon and finish bottom 4 now. Why you ask?

Will help get a better player in the National draft and place pressure on clubs in the PSD, whether that be Warnock or even Seaby.

We desperately need a Ruckmen. Warnock is going to get a bit - far too much I believe. I would not be disappointed with Seaby for a 3rd / 4th round pick. May aid Putt's and Graham's development.

Seaby has played in a flag and can take a grab and is just 24, the years Ruckmen 'mature'. Warnock can't at this stage - take a mark - or Ruck for long periods. A straight swap for Raines for Seaby would do me. :thumbsu:

this is sooo easy some1 to play on a small foward, for my evidence look at st kilda game, the marsupial that is s milne kicks 7 gls!

You can't have a small defender as your first round pick. First rounders need to be match winners like Oakley Nicholls, Tambling, Pettifer, Fiora ect

Would love to see a big, bad, ugly mofo like Jarryd Roughead. None of that Matrix men bullshit, just a bloke that thrives on ramming a Sherrin through the big sticks
