The slate will be wiped clean once the salary cap is even for all clubs. If you manage three in a row, then i'll rate the premierships. For now, every Victorian realises that the salary cap concessions have been the key to the success of the clubs.

P.S. Premierships do equate to club profits.

These would be the same Salary Cap 'advantages' that weren't in place when he arrived at Brisbane?

How dare you denegrate the man with your pitiful commentry.

Your insinuations about him seeing an opportunity and grabbing it with both hands to further enhance his own reputation are an insult and more than anything else they are incorrect. And considering you don't rate the premierships, how did getting a team to those same 3 premierships add to his career?

How does it really feel? I mean really really feel? To know that such a legend, an instituation of Victorian Football, is the same man who recognised a major issue in player retention in a non football state after accepting a coaching position here, and is a big part of the successful lobbying that lead to the current concessions?

Sour grapes of the finest vintage seem to be your breakfast, lunch and dinner ROCK22.

Yep. And quite rightly so.

Therefore i dont rate the last three premierships.

Who cares! I couldn't care less if you rate the Lions premierships or not.

They're recorded for evermore in the annals of the AFL. Read it and weep.

Hawthorn could have kept a player like Jade Rawlings etc etc.

If they had offered him a three year contract, instead of two, they would have kept him. The salary cap had nothing to do with Rawlings leaving Hawthorn.

Just remember "bears" supporters, three premierships won purely on AFL concessions

However did we win this year with both Scotts, McDonald and Shattock out through injury? Few dollars tied up in those four players!

And you proof of that is?

I can think of at least 2 cases where your statement is not applicable.

1) North Melbourne of the 1990's.
2) Bris Lions of 2001 - $850 Operating Loss. Unless of course by some warped entanglement you are saying that winning the 2001 Flag enabled the Lions to sell a major extraordinary/abnomal item for an injection of cash to make an operating profit in 2002. If you are suggesting that is the case, could you please explain how winning the GF benifitted the Lions in the sale of a catering rights contract?

Thats what the Brisbane Bears Football club will be remembered for. The team that was given an advantage by the AFL to secure premierships, or atleast be in the finals for an extended period. Try fitting three brownlow medalists in a Melbourne team... NO CHANCE!

OK you moron. You've gained the attention that you desired. Obviously mother is not providing it at home and this footy forum is the only way you can get some gratification. What's the matter, lacking that self-esteem and searching to discover your sexuality? The only way you can feel some self-worth is coming on the Lions' board and hurl abuse at those that obviously are quite comfortable being successful and have no issues of fear of failure.
Crawl back into mothers' womb, 'cause it's very obvious that's where you feel most secure.

Jealousy, envy and failure are reasons why success is denigrated. Your intellect obviously has no ability to face reality. Excellence in management, in coaching, in recruiting, in administration are the reasons why the lions have won three premierships in succession.
The Lions are used as the benchmark of the AFL you moron. Instead of devaluing achievement why don't you write to your club and urge them to adopt the system that the Brisbane Lions have successfully patented?

Nuff attention for you. You don't deserve the time I gave you.

I would be jealous if the concessions where not there. Yet, just like the rest of the Victorian public, we have come to the realisation of promoting our victorian sport to the other states.

The last three years has been a successful exercise. The bears are now a stronger club, and Australian Rules Football is now stronger in your backward state etc etc

In two more years, once the salary cap concessions are even we'll have a better idea of the true "might" of the bears. For now, they will be remembered as a great team who needed that AFL support to maintain their run.

Brown, Black, Akermanis, Voss, Mal Michael, Leppa (hmm i'm starting to wonder whether an enquiry for salary cap breaches will be issued) -- nah, that wont happen, we need to promote the game up north.

A couple more premierships, and the game will be set up there for another 15-20 years atleast.

"Oh that Brisbane team" etc etc. Supporters will double up and the club will remain viable. Great ploy by the AFL. Sydney is next now;)

ROCK22, how did you come by that nickname?

Not by chance the number of times someone hit you in the head with a rock?

I wouldn't be too overley concerned with what goes on at our club if I was you. WE at least know our football staff don't aspire to nor tolerate mediocrity.

Shame you can't say the same.

Danni that could actually be it. I was thinking more along the lines of that's what you get when you start arguing with him - a ROCK wall, but you could very well be right. And thankyou for bringing up North Melbourne of the 1990s... It appears Rocky is unfamiliar with the intricacies of the game in his home state, let along one at the other end of the country

On I go again trying to take you seriously between wiping tears of mirth away from my eyes...

"Take out a black and akermanis -- close to the equivalent of the salary cap concessions and the team looks even again. Two or three players is all it takes for a side to be brought back to reality."

Very true, and whaddya know? From Round 11 to Round 20 Brisbane won just 4 games (losing 6). And why? Possibly because they were hit by one of the worst injury lists ever seen in the AFL? And as Roylion pointed out the side that took to the field on Grand Final day was nowhere near 100%, both in terms of the personnel available to actually play in the match, as well as the physical well being of some of those players. Similarly, on GF day 2002 they had an absolute shocker injury wise, and they were well and truly the walking wounded by the game's end. Most of the self proclaimed experts acknowledged a magnificent effort from Collingwood, the real experts acknowledged a magnificent effort from both sides given the circumstances, people like you just whinged. Sometimes football has more to do with the size of your ticker than the size of your back pocket. This season was testament to that.

"If you manage three in a row, then i'll rate the premierships. For now, every Victorian realises that the salary cap concessions have been the key to the success of the clubs."

Is that realises or hopes? In any case, you're actually not that far off the mark. I don't think there'd be any of us on here who would actually say that the concessions have not affected Brisbane's ability to win premierships - otherwise what would have been the point of them in the first place? The fact of the matter is that the concessions have enabled Brisbane and Sydney to compete with other clubs on a level footing. But it seems you have a chronic aversion to facts. Is it any coincidence that at the time when Brisbane and Sydney were on a level playing field with everybody else, they spent five years at the bottom of the ladder? Is it any coincidence that during that time, their lists consisted of 30 year old plus hasbeens who were only there for a holiday, or because it was the only place they could get a game (oh and throw in the odd rookie who left as soon as he could - often to try and win premierships :p )? I think not. It's all about money... players in their prime would demand to be paid better by being forced to leave their home state. It's common sense, it's not that hard to understand, even for you!

"In two more years, once the salary cap concessions are even we'll have a better idea of the true "might" of the bears. For now, they will be remembered as a great team who needed that AFL support to maintain their run."

No you won't. I'm feeling a bit of a recurring theme coming through here. It seems a little strange that somebody who commented on me "having plenty of time on my hands" and thanking me for my "thesis", appears to have not actually read a single word I wrote. Which I might add doesn't surprise me in the slightest. To reiterate, in "two more years" Brisbane's list will have changed, as it has every year. Players will have retired, the players the club has drafted in recent years will have to brought on, and if logic has its way, they will be found to be inferior to those players drafted by every other club. Therefore, Brisbane will start to struggle. People like you though will see the Lions struggling and will think "see, they're not so good after all." You are delusional.

Danni, rchowell, nuff attention on this turkey.
I don't mind a good debate if the opposing view has merit or the person with the opposing view has intelligence and presents some intelligent reasoned points of contention. This turkey has no idea. He/she has shown about as much intellect as a ROCK.
Leave it be.
I know it's hard not to respond to brainless morons but don't get sucked in to lower yourselves to the level of this dork. I gave him five minutes of my valuable time and I regret I did that. I have better things to do than waist it on idiots.

We are the boys from old Brisbane
We wear the colours bla bla bla bla
We love our salary cap concessions
Or we'll never see a cup

THATS ALL YOU'LL EVER BE REMEMBERED FOR BRISBANE. THE TEAM THAT NEEDS "ASSISTANCE" FOR VICTORY!

I think you need a copy of this ROCK22. Hey you might even see a couple of one hundred point thrashings of Hawthorn on there. See, everybody's happy :)

Yep. Bring it on. The more assistance the better.

It'll be nice to set a new record of five premierships in a row. Collingwood's had that record much too long.

Sydney should win a few premierships soon as well. It's only a matter of time.

Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions to meet in the next three grand finals is my prediction. Possibly more.

Remind me to wave from my seat at next year's GF. There's nothing like being at the AFL GF, Rock22.....especially when you win.

I guess the burning question will be, how on earth will I be able to hold five premiership cups at once. Three is difficult enough.

Will any other side have a chance at all of winning a premiership this decade? It's difficult to see how.

Oh well. Them's the breaks.

Thanks AFL.

How about all the extra money that those poorly managed victorian clubs will get because of the TV deal, which was considerably higher due to the development in Brisbane and Sydney? infact if you could argue that some of the victorian teams are staying alive partly from money generated by financially successful northern-state clubs.

Or how about the fact that the victorian sides don't leave their state more than 4 or 5 times during the year?

the fact is with the salary cap concessions we haven't poached any players, infact we've lost one of our best ones (Dessie). the main reason why the players have stayed together is because the big earners have taken considerable pay cuts.

have a look at some of the numbers at which our players were selected. Black was picked well into the 30s, McDonald was over the 50s and most of the older ones (Voss, Ashcroft, Aker etc) came through the youth setup and have been here their whole careers.

great coaching, shrewd drafting and a willingness to take pay cuts has kept the team together and at the top of the heap. not a few extra $$$.

sydney have had bigger concessions than us and haven't won a thing...surely that says something??

I love people like Rock22. they think they are making a difference by bleating, dropping the Bears name etc.... reality is what he is spouting means diddlysquat. We should invite him up to the Gabba for a game and show him the cups. He obviously needs to get out more.

OK Folks.

This has gone on long enough. No more.

If we don't respond to the obvious bait laid out then these sorts of discussions that go nowhere will cease to exist. Ignore this sort of post and you won't get so angry or worked up about it yourself.

This is a Brisbane Board and other supporters are supposed to show respect when coming here.
