Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

So he's willing to tell Reid to **** off , but not mills, parker or mcveigh?

Pretty easy call to make on Reid difficult conversation with the others. Alliir's injury is probably the reason those guys got the nod with Marsh incredibly unlucky. I tend to forget about Marsh a bit and hope he can continue what he started as he was looking pretty solid. Incredibly difficult decisions were made and now it's pretty easy to make the call after McVeigh's game etc. Other coaches will make the tough calls but for all we know a few bulldogs were played with risky niggles.

Dogs had the dead rubber of round 23 and the pre-finals bye to get a few players back in form. We, unfortunately, had a rash of players go down at the pointy end. A fit Macca, Buddy, Mills, Aliir and Parker would have been welcome for the GF. If we'd have had more time (just a few weeks before finals) we might have seen Teddy and Reid given some game time to get them ready if needed for the GF. Poor injury timing and shit umpiring were the two things we couldn't control.

On a side note, those Dogs fans are now suggesting the reason they knew the rules had changed but we didn't was great coaching. Apparently they were "ahead of the curve". Do we assume then that 2017 will see a full disclosure by the AFL that throwing, leg sliding and dropping the ball in tackles is now legal ? I hope Reid realises he's coming back to a different world to when he last played.

You cant claim McVeigh as an unlucky injury problem. He nominated himself to play when he was unfit. The worst player on the ground of both teams. We had better young players who should have played and made a better contribution against a fast running opponent.

Yes, perhaps, but that's an entirely different debate. Had he been fully fit it would have helped, so the injury was unlucky for the team.

In hindsight you wish horse would've rolled the dice on Reid. Xavier would have been the obvious omission, but geez, Reid in for mcglynn would have been well worth the gamble.

Macca wasn't terrible in the gf imo. He wasn't much of a contributor but definitely not our worst. He had a couple of nice touches but just wasn't a driving force for us at all. Benny was probably our worst, with rohan close.

Well that depends on your assessment of where McVeigh is at. I know this has been done to death last year in this forum but his form in 2016 for the whole season was sub-standard. Marsh or Newman would have been a better selection. Newman in a first game in a GF? Big task for the young man. Newman should have been given McVeigh spot in the season to give him experience. The playing of McVeigh throughout the year narrowed our options for the GF when he was clearly injured. The Irishman, Newman and one or two of the young mids should have been blooded before the GF to expand the replacement group. Playing McVeigh last year wasn't just a problem in the GF. It was major selection error for the year.

He played probably the worst game for a captain in a GF in the history of the game. A fringe contributor at best. Captains MUST lift teams on the field. So he got a couple of nice touches. in a GF? As a captain? If that's ok for a captain in a GF no wonder we lost. Kennedy led us on the field in the GF.

I was purely referring to his inclusion in the game. He did enough to justify his place in the side over an inexperienced player like Marsh.

As a captain, leading your team into the biggest game of the year, he was an utter failure.

Rohan was our worst player by a long way. 2 effective disposals (80% TOG before someone tries that excuse). 4 clangers. 0 one percenters, even though I always hear he contributes such great pressure.

I agree with your assessment that Rohan was our worst on the day.

I am surprised he was given 0 1%'s though. He charged down Boyd on a kickout which went through for a behind IIRC, I thought that would surely be one.

fit Reid is a massive improvement over X, lets face it. Straightens us up big time. We have hardly seen He, Tippet and Buddy play together. Give them 5 or so games playing together and it could be a scary proposition for defenders. Name a team with 3 talls capable of playing on all 3.

They played the back half of 2014, plus the first 11 games in a row in 2015 together

West coast, McGovern, Barass, schofield and mcckenzie

I don't know who was worse out of benny & rohan. I know rohan kicked a goal, while benny missed one that killed off any momentum we may have gained after buddy burst through to deliver the ball into the f50 with 5 minutes to go. That and benny spent the afternoon chasing opponents and falling over people.

That was confirmation that the game had passed him by, the same happened against gws, which was a tell tail sign. Benny may have been effective if we had the game on our own terms, like we did against the crows & cats, but he wasn't up for a scrap. But hindsight is 20/20.

.
. Just on this... perhaps this is why Longmire was so pissed off at X. Offered nothing after given a chance, when there was a better player to bring in, albeit at a risk. I bet if horse knew X was planning on leaving, the decision would have been a lot different.

X is a selfish twat and I'm glad he's gone.

I would have kept mcglynn in for that extra small forward role. In hindsight, that would have been the wrong call. Coaching is a tough gig

I'm hoping Macca has a good preseason this year and gives more of his vintage form (his pointing was sub-standard in 2016 IMO). I doubt he'll opt to go n another season regardless but with a good preseason and without the weight of captaincy he should improve on last year. For me, I won't criticise too heavily a guy who has given so much and earned an obvious respect from his peers. Perhaps the call was flaky but I imagine there was some feeling that the extra leadership in defence was warranted.

If he can re-create his goal from the 2012 grand final I think we should rename our bnf after him
Lets rename our B&F after Mitch Morton, who scored 2 goals in that grand final on a lower salary

mcveigh's problem is the same as his brother : a sudden drop in pace due to age.
