Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Not sure why we would put extra pressure on him. I doubt any manager would be accepting penalties like that in a contract anyway.

Just give him a basic 1 year contract on below average money. No triggers or penalties or rewards.

While I was being more than a little tongue in cheek, I personally support the notion of some performance based element.

Should be in every contract. Base plus senior games played plus other relevant incentives. Don't make the incentives too big because injury can hit anyone, but be meaningful.

Pretty sure most contracts have incentives for finals and AA nominations, etc. The problem is balancing out your payments vs the salary cap if you are too successful. It is a fine line.

I believe most contracts also have match payments, even for senior players.

Why though? I don't think Reid's application has been questioned. He just has a fragile body.

Sam himself noted he had worked harder and more diligently in the off season ahead of 2022. Years ago when he had the goal kicking yips at levels that make Waywards kicking issue look minor, he rebuilt his routine in the off season.

I had a dream last night that Sam was playing CHB. I only watched for a couple of minutes but he took a good pack mark and had a kick. Good signs

Were you on your phone for the rest of the dream ? Could have paid attention and reported more back here when you woke up. Sheesh

Nobody dreams about their mobile phone - even though we spend half of our waking hours on them. Why is that?

My AFL dreams I am always playing and without fail I fumble the footy.

True though I’ve never dreamt of my phone now that I think about it.
A ringing phone has become part of my dream whilst it’s ringing for real

I should dream of Sam Reid I kinda love the guy. Hope he gets another year playing for us.

I had an AFL dream once where I was on a horse and it was cold and there was snow on the ground and Sam Reid rode past me and kept on goin'. Never said nothin' goin' by. He just rode on past... and he had his blanket wrapped around him and his head down and when he rode past I seen he was carryin' fire in a horn the way people used to do and I could see the horn from the light inside of it. 'Bout the color of the moon. And in the dream I knew that he was goin' on ahead and he was fixin' to make a fire somewhere out there in all that dark and all that cold, and I knew that whenever I got there he would be there. And then I woke up.

I hope the Sam Reid Copy pastas' never die

If he gets injured on field we'll have to pay the remainder of his salary even if he retires
Shame. I'd love to see Sam play another year and stay fit but the odds of that are not great. The team must come first.

What if he's injured on field and then... oh, I don't know, someone "accidentally" runs him over in the car park (and then accidentally reverses back over him before deciding to go forward again and "accidentally" ensuring he won't try to crawl for help)? It could happen.

Of course I don't mean some innocuous injury, like a corky, I mean a proper long term season ending injury, the sort of injury the Swans media would refer to as TBC or even 4-6 weeks.

I would think that it is subject to negotiation. A player might agreed to be paid out a portion of their contract in return for retiring early and freeing up a list spot and to do the right thing by a club that has stood by them a long time and given them an extra chance. Plus if the player knows they are no chance of playing again, they may be glad to move on with their life and not be obliged to turn up to the club every day and rehabilitate full-tilt etc.

We have paid him to be injured many times before , why is it suddenly a worry.

He has missed 2 full seasons of footy in the past, another season he lasted what ? a quarter ? On big money for most of those too

what's one more year between friends

The fact he's not been delisted by now means we're likely giving him another contract

Maybe I am being mean spirited but I find the idea of Reid getting another contract just depressing.

He's quality when fit.

If he gets injured again we can pickup a pre season selection or a MSD. I think we'd be silly not to keep him at this stage
