Sam Reid

Sam Reid’s outstanding athleticism and strong contested grab make him a genuine threat inside 50. The 2012 premiership forward showed exactly that when he booted six goals in the Sydney Swans’ clash with Collingwood in Mark Grook at the SCG to win the 2019 Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal. The 2009 draftee can also play as a loose man in defence or pinch-hit in the ruck. Reid has had very little luck on the injury front in his time in red and white, but he didn’t miss an AFL match in 2019. He’s played 143 career games at the top level for a return of 154 goals.

Sam Reid
DOB: 27 December 1991
DEBUT: 2010
DRAFT: #38, 2009 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Wangaratta Rovers (Vic)/Murray U18

Thank
After a year on the sidelines dealing with a major hamstring injury, Reid has been working tirelessly to get his body right for one more crack at the AFL.

Following surgery in May, the 31-year-old spent the majority of the year trying to prove to the club he was worth another deal.

Even before finals, Reid was running at full pace at training sessions, while he has spent most of the off-season completing his rehab at Swans HQ.

However, with a crop of young forwards in Logan McDonald, Hayden McLean, Joel Amartey and Jack Buller, Reid’s experience could prove crucial to helping them take the next step in their AFL development.

Thanks for posting what the paywall doesn’t show

If nothing else his workrate and desire must surely inspire the other key forwards (especially Amartey/Ladhams) to up their game to be ahead of him in the pecking order

My goodness, where to start?

Thankfully he is not occupying a spot on the senior list, where as like as not he would leave no impression, other than on the banana lounge In the rehab room.

He should have been sacked immediately following limping on to the start of the 22 GF. Anyone who thought he was honest is at the Banyo Bloods level of naivety.

What a fraud. And so selfish.

Got a free ride in 23.

With luck Norf pick him up. An absolute match imo.

And so the old death ride begins

You do this rubbish to at least one player each year. Imagine being that miserable. I’m happily naive and won’t be surprised if he does break down. But optimistic that he will contrib……OMG what am I doing wasting my time talking to you. My bad.

you never recovered from me calling the JPK situation ahead of time.

Change your handle to Captain Obvious then. Death riding a player every week isn’t calling anything it’s just miserable hate.

No idea how the AFL can continue to call it a rookie list.

But still, I think giving young Sam another year is a good move.
Young Sammy has shown a lot of potential. Glad we re-rookied him. I think he's going to really be something when he gets over those niggling injuries and can string a whole season together.

I think it's a great decision. If he is fit over the back half the competition then we are GF bound IMO.
An ideal sub candidate this season given he can play forward or back and makes an impact, though he'd want to be nicely warmed up before throwing him out there I guess.

Im just looking forward to Horse naming both Reid and Hayward in round 1.
The melts from Horace will be hilarious!

ps.. Horace if you read this, JPK is a legend and Warner, Rowbottom, Gulden, Sheldrick, Roberts etc are all better for playing and training with him.

Happy he's sticking around.

I feel he probably ends up peripheral to the going-ons in 2024, but you could do a helluva lot worse than Sam Reid waiting in the wings. And as others have mentioned he's probably the perfect player to put enough pressure on McLean/McDonald/Amartey without being so great that he impacts their confidence, ie. he's not the immovable object that Buddy was when he was on our list.

of course JPK is a Swans great.

I doubt Sam's getting paid much (at least by standards of other senior players).

The upside of giving Sam another year could be enormous if we get injuries to key position players like we did last year. He can stand in for any tall in our team and make a damn good fist of it.

Think of Reid as the luxury of carrying a full-sized spare, while we have the space to fit him in. There'll be no speed restrictions when he's on. Sam comes with the added bonus that he's always been one of our very best players for contested marks and inside 50 pressure. Reid's almost never outmarked and you always know he's going to give his all. When he's fully fit he's an upgrade on some of our younger forwards, while others will benefit from playing beside him.

The down side risk of giving Sam another year is minimal. His record suggests he's about a 15% chance to miss the entire year, in which case we'll have wasted a rookie spot but we'll still be able to promote another rookie in his place. Also based on his record, there's a 38% chance he'll play less than half the games this season, but as we're unlikely to need him for more than half a season worth of games that shouldn't be an issue. With the luxury of being able to carefully manage his playing time he could remain fit all year and keep pressure on others to perform, especially nearing finals.

Without the pressure to perform week in, week out, having had a year off to recover well and now enjoying a much longer preseason than he would normally expect, Reid is a good chance to stay fit this year. He might even finish off with a blinder, as he almost did in 2022.

Lots of us Swans fan would love to see Sam reach 200 games and finish on a 2024 premiership. Mostly, I think we all just want him to perform well in his last season and enjoy his footy.

No-one can say Sam hasn't given his all to our club. He hasn't had the luckiest career but he's a genuine heart and soul player. Sam risks injury every time he throws himself into the fray, which is every time he plays. He could have called it quits several times over his long career, and one or two fans think he should have, but Sam refused to let go of his dream. His grit and perserverance is an inspiration to our younger footballers.

In my view: a fit Sam Reid > a fit Joel Armatey.

However, they are mutually exclusive (as one will always be on the injury list), hence the selection order of precedence is a moot point.

In fact …… on reflection, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sam and Joel together at the same time.

Is Joel Armatey really just Sam Reid in disguise? A brilliant Swans list management masterstroke?

Using two spots for one player is a masterstroke?

Way ahead of amartey
I hope not. Amartey has a lot of upside. If he can realise it and stay uninjured our team will be much stronger.
Amartey can take marks at the top of his reach.
He can kick bags quickly.
Unfortunately he regularly gets injured. If he can fix this, I think he is ahead of Reid.

Joel is 7 years and 9 months younger than Sam, who is 31, 32 at the start of next season.
On exposed form when fit Joel is the better contested mark but Sam is better in pressure and defensive skills.
We need to get Joel fit and playing full games. The big question in my mind is whether that is best in seniors or VFL. I hope it's in seniors, or if not , it's because Buller is chasing hard rather than Sam.

I really love the Rubbaduck posts.
I like words or turns of phrase to describe things best. Always loved them as a kid. Asked my parents for a dictionary when I was about 7.
I thought the biggest word in the dictionary was dinosaur because it was the biggest animal I could imagine.
When in my teens I discovered the thesaurus I was in heaven, I love words and turns of phrase. Words that best fit what you are writing or saying. Things that you write or say describe things that people can imagine easily.

I think you are selling our Samuel a bit short here. I think Reid is a sensational contested mark and would possibly be the best in our team. I think Amartey has the potential to do this as he has shown glimpses, but he doesn't have the consistency of Reid yet.
Reid is VERY underrated by some in here with his marking.
