Judging by WC's current performances we will most likely end the year with 5 wins or less which will give us the oppurtunity of snaring some pretty good players in the national draft. I have heard that this year's draft is going to be particularly good which is "some" good news for the club. Draft picks we will most likely pick up (please note only estimates):

2nd
5th
20th
36th
52nd
68th
84th (probably the highest we would go if we even kept picking)

This means we will be getting a lot of youngsters of which 3 of them will be hot property if you want to call it that. And with a stack of players coming out of contract, we are in a good position. What I would like to see however is that we keep these top 3 picks even if we could get some well known players with them. To be a serious finals contender will take another 3 years and by that time the pick we traded away will be beginnning to play good footy. The player we got however would be getting a bit on the old side and would be of less value. Therefore I believe if we do go after some good players from other clubs they must be young (23 max) and we must be willing to trade away a couple of our existing players (Morrison comes to mind). This way I believe we would be creating a good stepping stone to rise again.

On this year's draft, since we will be getting at least one good young players, who are some of the names floating around to be picked up high, I've heard of Polack so far but not much else, anyone know of any others?

Anyway, just interested to see everybody elses thoughts on this years draft and how we should approach it...

I hope there are some good key position players in the draft. If we could pickup a good fullback, a center half-forward and a tall(bout 188cm) midfielder with our first three picks, it would really set the eagles up for a run at the premiership in 2004.

And with players like McDougall, Gaspar, Glass, Gardiner and Buszan we could have a really mad goal to goal line.

Sampie is a gun player according to my sources, still a kid who played colts for South Freo last year. I'd be interested to see how he performs in the national under 18 comp before I make a judgement.

But what does everyone think we should do with the top draft picks, trade them to get players like Woewodin etc. or keep them and trade players like Morrision in a direct swap?

My thoughts exactly.

i would like to see us trade banfield to sydney, Eade is stupid enough to give us his first pick for him id say, about 9th pick or 10th at this stage id say, and trade morrison for either a good tall defender or another low draft pick, there is no point in getting anyone over 22 in my opinion, be a superpower in 3 years rather than a power in 2.

Realistic draft numbers we could get from other AFL clubs with players that could be traded:

Morrison: 15-25
Banfield: 20-35
Braun: 30-45
Fletcher: 35-50

You get the point...I would prefer to trade the players above for another player at an existing club cause that way we know exactly what we're getting. We could for example trade Morrison away for number 18, pick up some kid who plays a couple of games but never makes the grade. What a waste. Or we could pick up someone like Lockyer or that hawthorn kid and know pretty much what we're getting.

i definitely think we should go for mcpharlin. i think we could offer him a lot more than hawthorn, there'll plenty of room in our salary cap next year. he's big and mobile and with mcintosh and jako coming to the end of the road we need to get a few talls in.
