We made the finals. But How?

We played an ugly type of game plan. Most of our matches were very scrappy and we clawed our away through most wins. Not thumping any sides thus finnishing with a poor %.
It was a game plan very much relient on our defence. Holland making it at CHB was a definant factor in our surge into the finals.

Our players looked comfortable with what the were instructed to do and did it well. 2002 only looked like we would get better.

Something happened.

what???????????

After 2001 I thought a premiership was not that far away. Ottens would become a top 5 player and with Richo we would have the best forward line in the league and the best defence.

That line of thinking is now well and truely gone. I look at othew sides and feel they have a better chance than us.

Do we need a fresh start with a new coach?

would i be right in sayinmg that in 2000 we played a better brand of footy than we did in 2001 when we made the prelim? In 2000 we copped a *****load of injuries, were undermanned, but we were playing with real gusto and zest, u culd never count us out, we'd always storm home with a wet sail, and IMO we were a genuine excitement machine. The only other time we played in that uninhibited style was 1995 and the last 5 games of 1997 when wallsy got the sack and giesch took over. Its like the players said bugga to the game plan, just get the pill first and run run run.

i was thinking abt starting another thread abt paul broderick, how much do we miss him? the clasiest midfielder weve had in the past decade without a doubt

Ok, we lose to the Western Bulldogs, we lose to Freo (MCG) the week after. Heres the question, will frawley be sacked?

Their is one big difference between now and 2001, his name is Leon Cameron. Unfortunately father time has caught up with him, its a shame we couldnt get him years ago.

It would be a brave/stupid board that would even consider sacking spud after round 4 or 5. My guess is that the club would hold out until the years end before they even consider terminating his services. Given our history with coaches tho ........anythings possible.

For me, Richmond's greatest strength that season was that they had two forwards who were able to take contested marks on a regular basis, in Richardson and Ottens. A strength of Richmond's game that no other team was able to match in that season.
