OK, I'm going to go on the record right now as saying next year the big issue will not be Colonial Stadium or the umpires been knocked over, it will be the coverage of the AFL by Foxtel - 9 -10

Now although AFL is by far my number one sport I'm also a big soccer and F1 fan, and I can see big trouble brewing in 12 months time.

Firstly, Channel 9's coverage of F1 has been nothing short of appalling over the past few years. I could write an essay on all their failings, but the way they handle it doesn't give me great confidence for the AFL coverage.

Secondly, and more importantly, this time next year, as well as the French Open and Wimbledon, there will be a small affair called the World Cup going on. At this stage Australia look like they are a real chance to make it to Japan/Korea.

If they manage to get there (I won't believe myself until I see it) what are 9 going to do? They hold the rights to the World Cup as well as the tennis and AFL. All the World Cup matches will be played in the afternoon or evening our time, and are sure to affect some AFL games.

If Australia is playing France or the like in a World Cup match surely that will take precedence over an AFL game. Then what happens? Do 9 just give up that match to 10 or Foxtel or won't it be shown at all?

Aren't 3 TV stations enough for you? The whole point of these three getting the rights was so they could 'share' them. At the moment it looks like Channel 9 is only going to have the Sunday games (The fixture will be structured completly different next year) but besdies that - there is channel 10 or Foxtel. Along with the rights being shared, I can see commentators being shared as well - this is going to be the new way we view footy, like adults who can handle one of their personalities being on another network.

I say thanks for the memories Seven, but a change is a good as a premeirship - or something to that effect.....

The way I understand it Nine gets the prize Friday night match, the two Sunday games, Ten gets the 2 Saturday night mathces and Foxtel get the other 3, whenever they may be scheduled.

Do you have Foxtel? If not will you be buying it to watch your team play? Because that's going to be the only option for some interstate games. And considering there is no cable in my area (something to do with blessed digital TV) we'll have to pay $57 a month for the right.

I reckon the AFL should have said ALL Victorian clubs who are playing interstate have to be shown on free to air - but that would be too good for the fans wouldn't it.

Correct. The AFL have already stated the match of the round will be played on Friday night, though how they'll know that 6 months/ 22 weeks in advance is a bit of a worry!

Well that was one of the conditions of the old broadcast agreement though the only clubs that it now applies to are those outside of Victoria.

In Sydney and Brisbane, AFL fans will not get the Friday night game until 11pm in 2002 because of Channel 9's commitment to Rugby League in NSW and Qld. Foxtel will not be allowed to televise it before 9's replay.

At present SE Qld gets it live on C7 and one hour delayed on Prime.

It looks like the "draw" will be even more rigged than it is now. Most Friday night games are bound to feature at least one of the Big Boring Four.

I am not looking foward to next year.
Up here we currently get 3 or 4 games a weekend.
Under the new deal with channel 9 getting Friday night and sunday afternoon games we stand to loose 2 games a weekend as channel 9 currently show rugby league on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Channel 9 have since admitted they are not going to get rid of the league so its a pretty bleak future. If they really want to benefit from the new deal channel 10 should show Friday night and sunday games and 9 should show the saturday. Channels 9, 10 and foxtel only have to ask channel 7 what sort of trouble they are going to be in next year as the AFL supporters up here are quite vocal when they dont get any games.

May this season last as long as possible......

Surely to god the AFL ensured in its contract with 9,10,Fox that the game will have maximum chance of exposure/growth in Syd/Bris. Thats what i thought we were assured, but it seems news keeps leaking to the contrary.

Im starting to get worried.

One thing I don't like about Pay TV

You have to buy the 'basic' package of a couple of dozen channels of dross and then buy the sport as an 'extra'. Why can't you buy just the footy ?

It's like making you buy a subscription to McDonalds just so you can go to a fancy restaurant now and again.

From my knowledge its 5 games on free to air and 3 on Pay Tv..Sat day and night and one sunday live game...i think the draw this year has been disgracreful for TV...One station cant cover all 8 games...Next year the coverage will be better as we have 2 free to air which will make a significant diffrence..I have foxtel ..Will we have to pay more for the 24 hr football channel..???

Doesn't matter for Sydney siders, at present we don't see the game on Channel 7 to 12:00am on Friday and Saturday Nights.

For myself, Having Foxtel, i am looking forward to next year, because, i will be able to watch every West Coast game. All 8 games will be replayed during the week.

If i were 9/10/Foxtel, this is the way i would structure it:

1 Friday Night Game (7:30pm) - Channel 10 covering live
3 Saturday Afternooon games (2:00pm) - Channel 9 covering one live and Channel 10 covering one live, Foxtel showing the other live
1 Saturday Night games (7:30pm) - Channel 10 covering Live
1 Sunday Morning Game (12:40pm - 3:00pm) - Channel 9 covering live followed by Rugby League
2 Sunday Afternoon games (2:00pm) - Channel 10 covering one live, FoxTel covering one Live
Tuesday - replays of all 8 games on Fox Sports II.

That way, 6 games are shown live on free-to-air, so the chances you see your team play are quite high.

That's the whole point of pay-tv around the world. Why do you think they try to buy sporting rights? They do it because they rate thus people take up pay-tv then they cross-promote other programs(sitcoms, movies, etc) on their sporting channels to try and intice those people to watch those shows.
