As for Stanton working across half-back to break his tag, that's totally different and you know it (or you're a little slow). A midfielder playing behind the ball is totally different to a defender breaking a tag. Opposition players tagging Shaw run away from the play in order to take Shaw out of the game, Shaw follows because he is a defender. Stanton doesn't have the same responsibility as a midfielder.

So are you happy when your best attacking weapon coming out of defence gets single figure possesions?

The point I am trying to make is, I would much rather push Shaw into the midfield when he is struggling to make an impact at half-back just to free him up, as you say, he has fantastic kicking skills.

HB is basically an extention of the midfield rotation these days so its not like he's never played further up the ground before.

As for forwards that take Shaw away from the play - well they're usually the teams' least dangerous forward isn't it? I wouldn't be wasting my most potent attacking weapon just to simply keep a player at HB quiet - example Monfries v Shaw last year.

He's a quality player, and stats watchers and dream team watchers wont see this. Football watchers will.

I'm not disputing that - I would love him at Essendon

Oh smart one. Pick out stats that a defender would contribute pretty much 0 to. Way to not be bias....

You claimed that Shaw is better offensively - I provided statistics which suggest otherwise, the position they play is irrelevant. The onus is on you to prove otherwise.

How about we don't base our opinions on stats?

Okay - I'm not a big fan of stats myself, but merely claiming Shaw is better offensively does not make it so.

How about we base it on the fact Stanton is a terrible kick, whereas Shaw is a far better kick and makes better decisions.

While I agree that Shaw is a better kick, you're views on Stanton's is horribly wrong.

Little tip. There is more to being good offensively than having pretty inside 50 stats or whatever.

As I said before - prove it.

You showed stats that were clearly bias towards midfielders. Shaw is a defender ans you're comparing their goals and inside 50s? It's a ridiculous comparison of stats, you know this. If you don't then you're clearly very, very slow.

Shaw is a better kick. Shaw makes better decisions. As I said before, Stanton is a terrible kick.

Forgive me for not trying to base all my arguments of stats though.

What exactly makes a player better offensively? I would be thinking it would be skills and decision making....

Stanton is a poor kick and is completely outside but has brilliant endurance. Which part do you disagree with?

As I said before - prove it.
Prove that there is more to being good offensively than stats?

It's just common sense buddy.

Rhyce Shaw averaged more inside 50s than Chris Judd in 2008. He must be better offensively.
Travis Cloke averaged more goals contributed than Gary Ablett!

Shaw must be better offensively than Judd and Cloke better offensively than Ablett by your logic.

See how common sense is better than crappy stats?

1. Cooney
2. Fisher
3. Mclean
4. Shaw
5. Stanton
6. Tuck
7. Adcock
8. Walker - would be higher if it wasn't for injury wrecking his 2008. It was like we cloned Judd with the way Walker was training with the midfield group before his shoulder gave way. :(
9. Waters
10. Sylvia

Cooney is the only player I would swap Walker for.

Walker is a rare beast with his speed, hardness, endurance, athleticism, versatility and talent.

One of my favourite players who was thrown into the deep end in a shit team and handled some big jobs because we lacked defenders and taggers.

Held Burgoyne to be BOG, but still won his own ball to set up and kick goals.

LOL'd when we turned around Brogan and Gray inside out three times on the wing and hit Setanta on the run. Incredible agility when he's nearly the same height and weight as Fevola.

Walker has a superior attitude and workrate than his mate Sylvia.

Just reached out and stopped Aker with one hand when he was twisting and turning to get away from our defenders.

Makes his tackles hurt.

Rischatelli and Mundy a bit underrated in this thread I reckon

Troy Chaplin hasn't even been mentioned either. Quality young 196cm key defender, albeit still finding his way.

Agree.

Line up all these blokes mentioned and give me a chance to put into our 22 and Chaplin would be behind only Cooney.

Andrew Walker is average. Stanton is overrated beyond words. Colin Sylvia is ****ing horrible.

Not convinced on Chaplin. I may be mistaken but from what I saw he spent a majority of 2008 behind Thurstans for the CHB position. Has talent but has done nothing to date and if he can't force Thurstans out of the team something is wrong.

2007 and 2008. The issue is that Thurstans is Choco's pet moreso than Chaplin not being up to it. He sees something in Toby that no-one else can and prefers him at CHB regardless of how many times he gets brutalised at the hands of the opposition's CHF/FF.

The bigger concern is that this maroons Chappy on a medium/small forward more often than not where he gets brutalised for speed and agility - the greatest example of this was when he was matched up on Steve Johnson for the 2007 GF instead of taking someone like Cam Mooney or Nathan Ablett.

99.9% of Port supporters would love to see him and Carlile forge a 10-year partnership together, but as long as Tobias holds his gold pass, Troy's potential will either be squandered or he'll demand a trade home - with North and Hawthorn looking like obvious destinations.

Yeah I suspected everyone except Choco would like Chaplin at CHB. But even so, and I'll freely admit I don't watch a whole lot of Port, I think I am yet to see Chaplin have the better of one of his opponents, KPP or non, in the air or on the ground. He may be denied opportunity at CHB but I reckon even Port fans must feel he's failed to deliver somewhat.

Stanton is so underated by opposition supporters its ridiculous. He has been a good player since his first game and has consitently improved his weaker points suc h as kicking and tackling. His kicking is now quite accurate and he has always had good distance. Last year he improved his tackling out of site and has been consistantly kicking goals. He is definately not as god as Cooney, but he's at least as god as anyone else from that draft.

Claims of Stanton is overrated are bullshit.

Every year he keeps improving, and whilst he may never be an A grader, he is a very good midfielder nonetheless.

Just this year he more than doubled his tackle count, increased his contested possesions, increased his the amount of goals.

I'll say it again - he'll never be a Judd/Kerr/Ablett but he's damn good at what he does.

Why is everyone rating McLean so high in this thread? Theres no way he should be in the top 5. Shaw, Stanton and Tuck are all far superior footballers.
