I reckon our 97 team would have beaten them last year, and would have gotten close this year, but not their 2001 side, they would have whipped us...

Personally I think it is getting a bit boring, nothing excited me about the Grand Final today. I was the same as last year and the year before.

Maybe I am just ****ty because we aren't there. I don't know.

Brisbane are a good side and on the day deserved to win. But I sure hope someone else wins next year!

Either Brisbane side 2001/2002/2003 would've slammed both our 1997 and 1998 sides.

Not even in the same league.

Who were we kidding? This Brisbane side is the best there ever was.

Yep.

The only thing I found even mildly encouraging is that we did better this time against them in a final at the Gabba than last year, and we even did better against them at the Gabba than the runner-up did against them at the G.

We still need to improve a fair bit to beat them though.

Today was an absolutely awesome display.

I couldn't have been much more excited than I was prior to the match, the Lions going for 3 in a row, I was tingly with excitement, hoping they could pull off a piece of history.

And did they ever! They showed exactly was a supreme football unit they are, skill and talent combined with, hardness and toughness, as well a no-nonsense gameplan.

Watching Collingwood players take their eye off the ball, fumble, make numerous clangers, showed they just aren't in the same league. Frankly, no one else is either.

Brisbane sits atop the pile, not just this year, or the previous couple of seasons, but in the annals of football history. The greatest. I don't care what Dan26 thinks.

They were awesome today.

They blew them off the park.

I'm with you Kristie... I wasn't excited about the match today either. Boring. I hate Brisbane, I hate Collingwood... who do I hate more? Who do I want to lose more?

I ended up going for Brisbane after to-ing and fro-ing... I'm glad they won, they deserved it, they were fantastic.

However, they can **** off out of it next year.

Brisbane are without a doubt a class unit. They are dead set awsome and to tell you the truth it wouldn't surprise me if they get 4 in a row and further cement their place in the history as the best side of all time. They got class all over the field.

I agree with dyertribe regarding our 97/98 team beating the lions. Not a chance in hell.

That was the one good thing about our season I suppose.

They are a champion team though. Their game plan is so basic it can't become flawed because they have such a quality spine down the ground. It's shades of the old Blight plan in some ways -staright down the ground most of the time, and longer rather than shorter. They don't mess around with it either.

One interesting thing is just how quickly things can turn around in this game. I know Leigh Matthew's daughter very well, and she told me after Sydney beat them towards the end of the season that Leigh told her they could NOT win the flag this year.

But they did. The cream always rises to the surface.

Well done Brisbane.

Brisbane is a fantastic team and congratulations to them.

I think we were one of the very few teams who could have stopped them this year as the GF is not won by a team of good triers ( ie Collingwood) but a team which has some champions who rise to the occasion.

The result today puts our finals performance into perspective-we lost by 7 goals to the eventual premier team on their home ground in 35 degree heat. This team beat Sydney on their home ground by 7 goals. Collingwood lost on their home ground by 9 goals and they spanked Port the week before. We may well have been able to match Brisbane if we had avoided meeting them at the Gabba.

Cheers,

Very well put. Certainly shows the advantage of playing home finals rather than finals at Brisbane.

I agree with the majority of what you are saying but no matter how many champions you have, if you don't have a good game plan and a good coach you will come up short.

It was an absolute delight watching Brisbane today. Very simple yet extremely effective game plan. Win the contest and get the ball moving quickly through the corridor and hit either Brown or Lynch in the KP. If they don't mark it you have a herd of crumbers around their feet getting the crumbs.

Yes we have stars in our team. Man for man we don't fall too short behind Lions apart from the spine where they absolutely sh|t on every other team in the comp.

Fix up our game plan, improve our skills, our coach gets smarter and less stubborn, everyone puts in 100% and we might pinch it next year. Too many ifs for my liking.

This year Brisbane have done it the hard way. The only side to make and win the GF after not getting a week off (with the current finals system).

Brisbane are complete package

If we want to have any chance next year we have to finish in the top four and there's no reason why we cannot.

I'm not sure whether I've written it before but taking into account our injuries ( did we ever have the same forward line for 2 weeks in a row?), dreadful draw in the last 7 games with 2 games in Perth and having to meet Collingwood after one of them, many of our players being down on form this year eg McLeod, Goodwin, Bode, Stenglein, Doughty to name a few, with Burton missing about 8 matches, not to mention that rogue point post (!), we did pretty well to get where we did. If Stevens and Welsh can play most of the season next year and those other player lift, I think all is not gloomy, unless Gary has to make some quick decisions during a match !

Cheers,

Brisbane's sides of the last 3 years are better than ours of 97/98. Not much doubt about that.

BUT

That game we played against Brisbane 2 weeks ago would definately have been a winnable game for the Crows of those years. Two weeks ago we really struggled all game but were leading half way through the 3rd qtr simply by eeking out goals and surging for 10 minutes in the 3rd. Blights Crows had a flair about them. They played such an attacking and free running game that I believe we would've gone very close to winning that particular game and ending the Lions season right there. Admittedly Brisbane weren't in their best form at that point but the game was in Brisbane too. Take the Lions away from Brisbane and the Crows of 97/98 definately would have have been in with a huge show. Despite what eventually happened, the Lions were not invincible this year. Last year maybe but this year they were beatable. It's just no-one did. Well, Collingwood did but they had the 2nd chance.

But it's all speculation. You just can't really judge. I mean nobody really expected the Crows to win those Grand Finals at the time so how can you predict games in different eras. But I don't think it would've been beyond our Crows of 97/98.

I'm going with something similar to what Cloke said... If we had Leigh Matthews as coach, we would beat Brisbane... Gary Ayres simply doesn't have the brainpower...

haha. Santa might be feeling extra generous this year, so we never know :p

Maybe he could bring a couple of brains, give on to Sarge. The guy tries he's guts out, he just doens't have the smarts.

Ah, but alas, as our coach, he does, and that, unfortunately, is where we will fall down, time and again next year. Even if we happen to have our stars all fit and available and firing, with Ayresy calling the shots and having to make the important matchups and moves, lol, we don't really stand a chance.

2005 is the year.

I'm with you, I felt exactly the same, might be 'cos I didn't want either team to win really. I'm also really hoping someone else wins next year-like maybe the Crows :D
