2007 Draft - could it be one of our best?

On the back of Tom McNamara being named for this week's match against North, I thought I would bring this topic into discussion.

Travis Johnstone (Brisbane) for pick #14 in the National Draft (Jack Grimes)

With the exception of Zomer (likely to be delisted at the end of the year?), all of these guys have played senior footy already.

The rookie draft was pretty impressive too imo.

Yes, definitely our best draft from the perspective that we didn't make any errors in who we picked. Scoring Grimes at 14 was huge, but it is more than that - everyone we picked bar Zomer has the potential to be an AFL regular.

When your top two picks are now regulars, thats a win.

Maric & Cheney have both shown some glimpses during their time in the senior side.

Secondly, anything beyond our actual picks outside the national draft is a bonus. Martin and Wonaeamirri both have bright futures at the club IMO.

Great work pulling the trade for Johnstone for the draft pick that we got Grimes with, his struggling to get a game now at Brisbane and we've all been excited by Grimes' progress.

I've got a lot of hope and expectations for Maric. I think that he has very good sense around the ball and will develop very good skills. I like him more than Wonna as a long term small forward prospect and maybe even a midfielder (not that I don't love Wonna too though).

I also like Kyle Cheney more than most others on this forum.

Grimes was a steal at 14. Easy to see why we were so happy with that one at the time.

That was a strong draft though, the likes of Kreuzer, Cotchin, Masten, Palmer, Rioli all very good players already.

There's a lot to like about Cheney at 53, his marking is a highlight and the nature of his game naturally offsets that of Bennell which could prove useful.

How does that work Dean? If we picked up five Cameron Hunters + Grimes would he still make them "look better"?

change the draft to the kid taht came before him and it doesn't look quite as good, the presence of Grimes and the fact that he's been the bright light through this dark year makes it look better

Yes but nobody is talking about "What if's?", we are talking about who we DID draft.

Ebert is a nice young player incidentally.

Not as good as Grimes, but no mug.

In my mind what makes a stunning draft is 8 years after the draft when the guys are in their prime and have played 100 games each. Usually if you can get 3 or 4 from the one draft and at least one really decent player you are doing well.

In this draft it is almost a given Morton and Grimes will be very good players, but the beauty of this draft is how many still look good. In cricketing terms it has the class at the top but also bats very deep.

If you've watched enough of Maric and Wona you'd say they are odds on chances of being good forward/mids. Cheney and McNamara could go either way but they could be strong medium backs.

Then in Meesen, Martin and Spencer we have 3 promising ruckmen. Who knows where they will be in 5 years but at their respective ages you'd be pretty keen on one of them at least becoming a solid first ruck.

Valenti could go either way, and Zomer is in trouble but if you take those two out it is still 9 guys who look a chance of making it. Give it 6 years and I'm sure we'll still have 6 or more players from this draft in our best line up and they will make good combinations across the ground. So far so good for Craig Cameron's departing draft.

That is an incredible draft by the Demons, especially when you consider that Tom McNamara could end up being as good as any of those guys, yes that includes Grimes and Morton.

I rate him highly.

Brad is a fair good player also, but in our situation we needed backmen badly thats probly the main reason we picked Grimes, just so happens he got off to a flyer late this season.
