70. North Melbourne - Liam Anthony (East Fremantle) – MATURE-AGE 189 / 87 MIDFIELDER/WING/FLANK

I like Anthony more than I do Cockie, is that just my East Fremantle bias kicking in?

I'm still not sure if Anthony will get drafted, I would really like the kid to have a shot.

LOL, maybe mate, but I wouldn't be the best judge either :D.

Trying to remove my EF bias ... Anthony's a better attacking weapon, while Cockie's a better defensive weapon. Anthony's an awesome height for a midfielder/flank, kicks more goals, gets more of the footy and has sharper footskills than Cockie, but Cockie's hardness at the contest, tackling and defensive work is absolutely top notch and can have just as big an impact. Depends what you want I guess.

I'd be surprised if Anthony isn't drafted at all considering the success of last year's EF products in H.Taylor and B.Dalziell and the popularity and success of other mature-agers in the last few years. I'm hoping Freo draft him ... need some mature-agers can't just take 17-18 year olds only.

Pick 76 - Adelaide - John McDonald

McDondald is a typical forward pocket or flank with a lot of x factor. Reads the play well and is very dangerous near goals. He is also a local boy for the Crows.

Pick 77 - Collingwood - Brad Mangan

Best available is the likely here. Mangan is bottom aged who has good skills and can use the ball on either side of the body. Can win his own cobntested ball and is a very good mark. He can play a variety of roles including midfield, wing, HFF.

Pick 78 - StKilda - Ben Cousins

Would've loved Mangan here. Picking Ben Cousins here is more realistic. If he gets the all clear to play on and he wants to play in Melbourne, it'll be a near certainty that the Saints will pick him up. Absolute superstar of the game, can break a game wide open. Brownlow medallist, former captain, on field leader. Looks very very fit, and will get back into the motions of AFL football very quickly. Don't really need to write about his skills or pace, Brownlow speaks for itself. I think he will complement the Saints midfield nicely, and possibly take it to the next level.

Thanks Tarqs, set up an excellent draft here. Props to the the other selectors too. I think we actually did a very good job, one to rival the Official Run. ;):p

I keep thinking that Freo will only select one of Cockie and Anthony, so my Sharks hat is saying Anthony. I still have a slight feeling that Cockie is rated higher.

To be honest i havent really heard or seen anything about Anthony, except at the back end of a couple of phantom drafts...

Im a bit concerned about who Fremantle take with thier 2nd rounders.... Almost feel like it could define the way us Freo supporters view the 09 season.

I meant altogether as a draft class:

Daniel Rich, Steele Sidebottom, Nick Naitanui, Tyrone Vickery, Hamish Hartlett, Jack Ziebell, Jackson Trengove, Tom Swift, Ryan Schoenmakers, Nick Heyne, Daniel Hannebery, Casey Sibosado, Adam Cockie, Tom Allwright etc.

The Den is going to have a field day with some of these over the years.

86. Port Adelaide - Warren Benjamin (Claremont) – TOP-AGED 187 / 85 MIDFIELDER

  • 2008 WA U-18 squad
  • 2008 Claremont Colts B&F winner
  • Extremely quick off the mark (2.76 20m at 2008 SS) ... uses it well to burst free at stop plays
  • Very hard at the footy (opposite to Clint) ... inside midfielder
  • Very strongly built ... uses his strength advantage well
  • Footskills need some refinement
  • Bullet hands and good vision in congestion
  • Good goal kicking strike rate (nearsy 1/game in colts)
  • Played some league footy but barely saw it.

Port like speed and have a good record with indigenous players. Benjamin’s one that’s crept up to be a mid-late round draft prospect according to some Claremont people (...though you can never trust them), with several clubs showing late interest. With the strength/toughness/speed combo he has the ability to be a valuable inside mid, just needs to get some more miles into the legs and polish up a bit on the footskills.

Pick 87 - Essendon - Bart McCulloch

I was going to take a smoky here like a few others are but I've just realised that big Bart is still availble.
Could play ruck or could play key back/forward so he would be ideal for Essendon's needs. At pick 87 he is a bargain.

Pick 88 - Carlton Lance Daly

Another one from the Swans production line, top goal kicker for the colts. Worth a punt at this end of the draft. Adds some more potential to the forward line of the Blues

Pick 89 - Brisbane - Taylor Hunt

More midfield grunt, maybe should have taken a gamble on another tall, but thought the Lions would go for depth in their midfield

Pick 90 - Brisbane - Johnny Rayner

Champion runner, so lets see if he can turn that into midfield success. Once again the lions would be hoping one of these two late midfielders makes it in the AFL.

102. Port Adelaide - Alroy Gilligan (Claremont) - MID AGED 177 / 72 WING/HFF

* 'will of the wisp' build (the main worry)
* Very miraculous type with bucketloads of pace, X-factor and agility
* LIVEWIRE
* Silky left foot skills ... mostly deft passes, but I remember him kicking a long running goal from 50m so he can penetrate it OK.
* Long chasing tackles and v.good pressuring
* Dishes it off well and shows very good vision
* Quick bursts across and through traffic
* ELECTRIC run and carry
* Played mostly of half forward with some stints in midfield and on wing
* Can take spectacular high marks

Not really a need, but there's not much else around. Gilligan is a terrific talent and an excitement machine in the mould of a A.Davey, yet small and slight ... Very unlucky to miss out on state 18 berth, but nevertheless a chance to be picked up as a late pick or rookie in the upcoming drafts.

Once again, thanks for co-ordinating this Tarquin (GO YOU SHARKS!) and to everyone else involved in the 'mock' recruiting.

102. Port Adelaide - Alroy Gilligan (Claremont) - MID AGED 177 / 72 WING/HFF

Stolen from under Carlton's nose!

There are some rumors around that he will be picked up earlier than this.

He was going to run around with Betts...

Back to the drawing board for me.....

Pick 103 - Carlton - Casey Sibasado

Was going to pick Alroy (I loved the Jetson's)....Jane his wife....

Anyway, the other name that came to mind was Johnny Bennell.

Still not 100% sure I went down the right path, but here is another big guy who will play down the flanks or around the forward line.

Showed he can kick a goal or five. Worth a shot with this last pick, looked ok playing for NT as well.

Sibasado has already been taken ;) are you gonna post the results on the phantom drafts board
