Hi everyone,
In Nov last year I started a thread called 2008-2009 the transition. It was an attempt at looking into the future and trying to see how our team would be changing. It was mildly succesful (although I have no idea why I wanted to move Bock!)
Today I can see us moving from transition into emergence. We have turned over our list and although most other teams supporters have no idea yet, I think they are about to see the emergence of our young talent.

For that reason I thought I would start a new thread. I have pasted below what I put last year and then what I would now see.
It would be really interesting to see your thoughts and then reflect on again in 12 months.

From Nov 2007:
Start 2008:
Bassett Rutten Symes
Edwards Bock Massie
Goodwin VB Knights
Burton Gill McLeod
Porplyzia McGregor Johncock

Bassett Rutten Symes

I/C: Griffin Burton Otten McLeod

Start 2010:
B:Petrenko Rutten Kite
HB: Otten Bock Gallman

FF: McKernan Walker Porplyzia

R: Maric Van Berlo Reilly

Before anyone rips me to shreds, have a go yourself. It's getting very difficult to fit everyone in!

Seems you rated Gallman pretty high ? :p
Very young team, Sellar ahead of Tippett seemed to be everyones thought back then. Would love to see Jacky get some gametime aswell as Otten.
No Walker  ;)

Love the start team, but I tell you we have to have Shirley in our team; although if we didnt, I would take him out. Always shuts down the most damaging player onfield which is a HUGE help. Happy to see Douglas in there.

As for the end team, I would like to see Mackay and Doughty swapping positions. Even though Doughty is now considered to be one of the strongest at our club, I think MacKay will take the next step next year. Again we need Shirley and no Symes? I do think he is a bit underrated by some posters here.
I think Jacky will find his way in the team by the end of 09 to be honest. (I will post my teams after). Although I think this is Edwards last year, he will still be in the team at the end of the year, one of our best players. I would also love to see one of the new recruits getting a few games throughout the year and keeping there spot. Most likely out of Sloane, McKernan.

Start 2010:
B:Petrenko Rutten Kite
HB: Otten Bock Gallman
C: Knights Reilly Mackay
HF: Vince Sellar Thompson
FF: McKernan Walker Porplyzia

R: Maric Van Berlo Dangerfield
IC: Tippett (rucking) Davis Cook McLeod

End 2010:

I/C: Tippett Cook Knights Bock
The start of 2010 looks great, because of the young talent but the backline is WAY too unexperianced (is that the word im thinking of :p). If McLeod isnt gone, he will start. I think Johncock will be gone by then too. If Symes plays back and then there are a few youngsters that will be fine.
Again another unexperianced space is the forward line, although I think it will work well. I like Tippett up forward more then a ruck but we will see how he develops.

Probably I will debate about the same things about the end of 2010 team, but very good job.

I will work on my teams in a minute :thumbsu:

I'm not going to rip you the threads but you forgot someone very important - someone who has just been voted into the leadership group - Scott Stevens!!!

Which of those back pocket players is going to stand your opposition's resting ruckman?

First things that stands out for me
Symes won't last even to the end of the season?? surely not
Bock to the bench by next year??? AA CHB says hell no
I'm assuming you have Shirley, Doughty, Stevens, Edwards, Goodwin, Burton, Hentschel, Johncock all retiring at the end of the year?
Good to see someone here has faith in Sellar and Gallman though
Our team is going to be extremely young and inexperienced by next year
Only 5 players (Thompson, Bock, Rutten, VanBerlo, Reilly) would have reached 100 games (none for 200)
Another 4 would be on 50+ (Knights, Maric, Porplyzia, Vince) and possibly Tippett and Mackay, Only half of our 22 with any real experience.

Have you time warped here from 1984 .... ruckman resting in the forward pocket??

I know Port let their guys drift up there from time to time but it's hardly common practice anymore.

I think what you mean is the back 6 looks a bit short and, if so, I tend to agree with you. But it's horses for courses these days, it depends who they are playing.

we have Moran or Maric or Griffin resting in our forward line fairly often
i wouldn't say it's a rare occurance
Everitt played forward for Sydney a lot this year
Seaby plays forward when Cox is ruck
Ottens plays forward when Blake is rucking
Cloke plays forward when Hampson/Setanta ruck
Laycock/Hill play forward
Hale/Petrie play forward
Lade plays forward
Minson plays forward

Bock to the Bench - WTF  AA CHB to be demoted to the bench as a 26 year old, to be replaced by a roolie 20 year old that we have drafted as a key forward

Sellar, this is based on a prayer, I am sorry to say no matter how much I want to see Sellar dominate at CHF, this lad will not make it at AFL level

They are guys who actually CAN play forward, and do so as part of a planned forward structure. They are not "resting" up there, catching their breath. They go to the bench for a rest these days.

What I am saying is that the days of ruckmen routinely swapping in and out of of the forward pocket (along with the "rovers") are long gone. You don't go picking a tall back pocket automatically like you used to have to.

Hi everyone, Thanks for your constructive criticism. I agree with some points, i.e. moving Bock from CHB by end of next year seems a bit rushed! Still I get the feeling either Bock or Rutten will not be part of our permanent backlines within the next few years. Don't know why, just a hunch that they won't look as good without the cover from experienced blokes like Bassett and Massie etc..

At one stage there I had a very small looking backlines, the intention was for Dangerfield to stand the 3rd tall and then destroy him on the break (he is pretty tall isn't he?) Still it does look unbalanced.

Anyway, rather than the 'where's Stevens? Where's Shirley?' etc.. comments, again I ask you to have a try putting a team together with some of the new guys coming through and I'm pretty confident you will find it hard to put everyone in!

We will have a great midfield with Mackay,VB and Knights like the old Roo,Goodwin,McLeod partnership but a problemb is that Mackay,VB and Knights aren't South Aussies so we have to hold on to em'!

VB's not going anywhere, he wouldn't get near the captaincy at Freo or West Coast and since Knights twin brother lives in Adelaide as well, I doubt he'd go home, so out of those three, the only one who might want to go home is Mackay.

Hi everyone,
I thought I should bump this thread for two reasons:

1. It's amazing how wrong we (read I) can be. I have seriously underrated Vince and Bock ,yet somehow I found positions for Kite and Gallman!
2. Everyone needs to look back at where we were at the end of last year and where we are now. Yes we hate losing (especially to C'Wood), but we are making progress exactly as expected.

My next instalment of this thread will be done later in the year, but is likely to be tagged (2010-2011 The Contenders).

We will be top 4 next year. We will play in the prelim and depending on injuries etc.. at the time, we will give oursleves a good shot at it.

dont know much about these guys this year, honestly, are these guys gonna make it in the afl? i know kit was all the rage last year, but seems to be underperforming this year? if cook can get his kicking right, he will play all games next year, he seems like a ball magnet. and walker should play all games next year also i hope.
