List Mgmt. 2009 AFL Rookie Draft

Hey I know it's early, but since we're all talking about our drafting, it seemed like a good time to start this thread.

We can update it as the training lists are released etc closer to the date.

One thing interesting is you see Wells talking here about our drafting:

which I seem to interpret as us taking a mix of players in the rookie draft.

I'd be keen on a Joe Dare, and certainly a forward type. Panos is the obvious name that comes to mind but far from the only option. And then there's the guys who've been training with us of course.

Thoughts please.

the mature age rookie rule will make things interesting as well, given a lot of recycled players were talked about, but few picked up

it'll be a quiet pre-season draft as well - unless there's any further delistings only 4 clubs have left themselves a spare pick. Melbourne (Joel McDonald), Richmond, Fremantle and Sydney (Daniel Bradshaw). I suspect Dare and Panos may come into caluclations for those two picks.

WCE (Stenglein) and Ess (McPhee) will also be picking. Also talk of Port trying to make room for one.

Given of the other 4, Richmond only are uncommitted, I wouldn't expect to see many kids in the PSD.

So I say Dare et al in the rookie draft.

I think GC get the first 5 picks in the rookie draft. You would think we may go a little taller in the rookie draft. Names like Tighe, T MacKenzie, L Thompson, Panos and Donaldson may be looked at.

How many rookie spots do we have?

I would like:
- KPP (fwd is my choice but a KPD would be handy also,ala Matty Egan)
- Inside mid (hard body in the Rooke type mould)
- Another ruckman as I think otto has 2 yrs max, West will be gone next year which leaves us Girl man, Simpson & Vardy.I think this is the area will be complaining about the most once Otto is gone.

I still don't know why we didn't jump on Black, Carlisle or Griffiths when they were available or Panos at P56 !!!

To help with contract negotiations over the looming threat of GC perhaps?

How old is he anyways? He has proven himself to be a reasonably good player, maybe worth a punt.

No idea. Ablett's a good bloke, and a decent (albeit not class) midfielder...but unless we lose some guys to trades/expansion he's not going to get a game in our midfield and he's 26, so it makes no sense to me, unless it's purely to try and help keep Gazza here, if the staff think they have a close bond and that would help. If we're going to take a mature aged rookie, I'd prefer Pods if he wants to...at least that fills a need on our list.

Would love to see us give Pods a shot....considering our position and strength at the moment we could compliment our forward line very nicely for the next two years with Pods playing a fill in role - ready made in my opinion and could actually turn out to be more.

Would love to see us take a shot with Thorpe, we wouldn't put up with much bullshit from him. Also Luke Ablett would be great for sentiment and again offers us a ready made substitute if we need to rest people.

All in all, very happy with our list at the moment, go Wells!

sorry i am a bit confused about the rookie system, do we get the oppurtunity to contract players before the draft or do we redraft them, hopefully before other clubs do?

I think so and I hope so.

As I've said before, for him to backflip on telling the addy he's playing VFL next year and to re-nominate, he must have been given the nod from someone that they'll pick him up. Whether it's us or another club I don't know.

7 unless you have more than 2 vets (after that I think it reduces). We've got 3 re signed for 2010 so we can take 4, and I'm pretty sure pne of those can be mature aged with the recent rule change.

Rookies elevated whenever a player goes on the LTI

I would be prepared to have Pods occupy such a spot, it'd be decent insurance.

Dare also I like, maybe Panos, and I'm not sure on Hooper. Good player, but not sure if he fills a need.

I think it changed to 8 rookies this year. With the option of having 2 of those spots taken by veterans. Which Geelong have used.

l thought that tom mackenzie would have been picked up in the first draft.l looked for his name but couldn't find it l would like to get this kid,but the devil l mean gold coast could steal him as said above l don't know why wells and co didn't pick one of black griffens or talia the word is vardy was the best ruck there.

I'm worried about that too. Although I'm hoping the GC's preference for more mature bodied players in the rookie draft might mean he slips through.

Tighe looks a reasonable option to me as a big bodied tall that would make a good rookie. Probably taken before our pick though.
