Captain in 2009 will be from Junior Mac or Cam The Bruce.

Although, I would love to see Robbo captain.

Also, I think our leadership group will contain the 3 above plus Green and perhaps Miller. No surprsies in that lot. I reckon the club will stay conservative...steady as she goes approach re leadership.

Our younger brigade just need to bide thier time, which will come. At the moment the club needs some older heads at the wheel.

By the way, don't get stuck into Brad Green because he asked and hyung out for for some security re dollars and tenure. He had every right to take his time on the deal. Probably the most important decision of his career.

Remember that these days , any club including the Dees , if it had the opportunity and the trade suited , would discard players at the drop of a hat like a meat market.

Just look at what Laidley and North tried to do with their ruckman. Loyalty??..yeah right. Unfortunately, thats footy in 2008.

Footy these days is Big Business and club / player loyalty went out the window years back. So a player needs to fight as best he can to get the best deal possible for himself and his family. Remember that we traded Woewodin while he was overseas and he didn't even know about it.

Greeny was going through the process of due diligence and therefore doing the right thing. We can't have a go at him for that.

Not that i have a source or that i agree with it, but it kinda makes sense. If they don't think that Brock is ready and Green may have ruled himself out, then they might see Bruce as the logical stop-gap captain.

Personally i think if they go with a stop gap junior is the best option as he'll most likely retire at the end of year, like Viney was a good option because he wasn't go to stay there long.

I know there different players but similar to Viney did in 98 and 99, which alowed Nietz to get his body right and develop as a player and leader. Bruce could do this role for Mclean who would be 24/25 after two more seasons which was the same age as Nieta who took over in 2000 and captained us to GF appearence at 25 years of age.

i think it has to be green, clearly our best leader... if not him i'd hope for junior, i think he'd be a good captain, a bit richie vandenberg like

I am going to cop some heat for this but James McDonald is a dud and if he was our captain he would be the worst in the league, sure he has heart i'd have heart if i was wearing the proud red and blue jumper too!

However, we must keep it proud and the way to do that is not give some one an honourary captaincy but give it to some one who wants it, who is a natural leader and is destined for it let's make Brock McLean the captain.

1. He can help mould the club and he grows as the club grows and gets more powerful. e.g Sam Mitchell
2. He would become a marquee player, a reverred leader and respected player
3. He is the only one who can lead us out of the trough that we are currently in.

I am not a Junior hater in fact i love the service he has given but footy isn't a fairytale (otherwise we would have the 1998 flag) footy is about the best and Brock is the best person to lead our proud and strong club through the times of harship back to the glory days!

I am a believer in direction and taking bold steps but they have to be at the right time. Timing is everything as they say. I can't see us being as bad next year as this year but as a playing group there are no real guarantees at this stage that we won't have another bad year.

From a captaincy point of view I think it could be in the interest of our younger players if we let a senior (veteran) type player cop next year as captain. Someone like a JMac, Green or Bruce would have a level head and would understand their role a bit more in a bad year. I don't want to see a player like McLean (who is still developing as leadership material and as a player) have to endure a bad 2009 as captain - lets give him a more confident start in 2010.

We don't have the squad that can support a young captain yet IMO because our squad itself needs more improvement and maturity. Give it one more year and then I say McLean is a shoe in.

lets face it, when brock is out there he is our leader, he is the 1 who puts his hand up and leads the way... ur all so worried about the presure but he is at his best on the big stage (vs st kilda 06, queens bday this yr).. if the club are worried about him with the media presure why not have him and bruce as join captains and let bruce do the media work... were building for the future and a tough yr as captain is going to help him more than to come in when were on the up and get carried...

Leadersip group

Brock
Bruce
Robbo
Green
Junior
Miller
Rivers
Moloney

Firstly how can you possibly gauge that and secondly the captain of our 2010 side is hardly going to be "carried".

McLean is an accomplished player for his age - no doubt, but it is a different story when you represent a whole side and are seen as the person responsible for getting them to perform on the field. I am not questioning McLean's ability as such but that accountability is perhaps something which will be dwelt upon if we have a bad year which we will. Captaincy is not just about being the first bloke to run through the banner, it is about galvanising a whole squad and being the first person who is looked at when a team (especially a young team) struggles. This is the aspect of the captaincy I am talking about - not the on-field aspects.

McLean is 23 next year so he is still pretty young with respect to captaincy. Holding off until 2010 won't hurt his experience as once he gets the captaincy (presumably) he will be captain for a fair while. My point about chosing an older player is not about shielding McLean from the task of leadership (he plays like a leader anyway) it is about giving McLean a positive start to the captaincy where he will not be judged for factors out of his control. We still have a young and developing list and we will have a bad (albeit better) year next year. Let a more senior player cop that rubbish next year with all the unfair pressure and unrealistic expectations and then give McLean something to work with in 2010. A young player/captain shouldn't have to be made answerable for or held accountable for a young and poor performing team.

I would not be surprised at all if Cameron the Bruce was not elected El Capitano, really this should not be an issue.

Sure we all love the Brockster and his time will come and I feel he will be outstanding, but for 2009, It's Vote 1 Bruce for me.

even though he's retired neitz will probably want to keep it

Your a brave person, if you come on to the Melbourne board and bag Neita, even if it is in jest!!!
