Well I cant run and hide...thread looks a real stinker now!:(
Why the sad face? You'd rather have been right?

I tipped the wheels to fall off and for us to finish 13th. Wrong and loving it.

It's been so long since we missed the finals I think we forget how hard the fans take it. If you think losing a final brings out the wolves, just watch and see what happens if we miss the finals.

Making the finals is always more acceptable than missing them.

If we a so scared of losing finals that we'd rather our team miss them altogether, then something is wrong.

I note a few people have stated that they'd rather miss the finals than finish eighth and lose. But the thing is you have to be in it to win it. Unless you think we can win 100% of finals we play you have to accept we will lose some. One thing's for sure, we won't win any by finishing ninth.
Good post.

We have been spoiled for finals participation this decade. Three years in a row under Ayers and, if we get there this year, five years in a row under Craig.

No silverware to show for it but perhaps a reliving of the barren 1994-96 years would put it into perspective for us.

its one thing to miss the finals, I thought we'd be about the mark but at this stage we may be getting our highest draft pick ever. fine whatever.

but I'm not too keen on this thing where we drop our bundle when the pressure is on. that's the route one to obscurity not a step towards rebuilding.

seems familiar :p

fail of a thread

we should win the next 4, which means we'll go into st kilda (who i think will still be undefeated) on the back of 7 consecutive wins (and arguable will be one of the matches of the year)
i'd just like to point this one out... :p

when this thread was posted we were 3-5 with a % of 83.4

what are the odds we are in as good a position this time? currently we're 0-4 with a % of 58.8

the percentage is the bit that kills me, that just says we're not even competitive.

this is something that always noises me up, people talking about how much better NC was than Ayres, conveniently ignoring that they have achieved broadly the same things.

consistent finals participation each year. some people talk like we NC created a finals team out of nothing, rather than extending the current level of success.

we had a bit of a spike in 2005/2006, and have settled comfortably into the same positions since.

We will go into Round 9, 3-5 hopefully :thumbsu:

Agreed, 3-5 is a lot different to 0-4 and what's likely to become 0-5.

And if you look at each of 2009's losses;
St Kilda and Geelong - Both very tough games early on, but were hard fought and the strength of both sides eventually broke us late in each game.
Port - No surprise to drop one to Port, though we didn't play very well either.
Bulldogs and Brisbane - Both times we were in a winning position until the 3rd Quarter dropout.

The 3rd quarter thing was a big problem, and looking at those losses at a whole, you can't possibly think that the way we were losing games last year are at all similar to the way we're losing them this year. It's not really a fair comparison.

Our odds on a flag in the mid-term future were toast after the 06PF. I think we were overly-confident in 07, went some way making some changes in 08, but have finally got the development/game-winning balance right. I don't think there are any players currently not getting a game that would benefit from some time in the AFL. Sure, there are some TOG with some of those playing (but I don't think we should gift them TOG at the risk of the game and the risk of their place off the injury list) and there are some playing SANFL that would cope with AFL. But none of those rookies would necessarily gain from extra time.

Jacky and Cook, yeah maybe, sometimes and they will get a few opportunities this year, but probably at the expense of Petrenko or a first-22 player's injury. Armstrong is still too skinny and outside. He was always going to be a 2011 sort of prospect. Awesome skills, just behind the 8-ball physically. McKernan could cope, but considering how irate this board gets at Moran, I'd rather keep the expectations and pressure low on McKernan, continue to development him in a number of differing and already challenging roles in the SANFL. Sellar might just be worth punting on, for the sake of it considering where he career is at at the moment, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I do not want to test Davis' shoulders for at least a year and he's still very much up and down in form at this point. Young has only been back playing footy for a year and a half, so more time at Norwood the better. Sloane has come back poorly from injury and is playing worse than last year at this stage. Lee & Kite are in the reserves. That's it off the top of my head. Also, seriously **** this defeatist mindset. As I said after the game, we have the personnel & the plan. We just need a bit of patience pulling it off. Don't panic and rework everything just for the sake of it. That's what led to Maric's omission (for example) in the first place.

Also, this year's draft is average, even at the top end, so who cares what pick we get.

Pretty happy with this post. Except we need more patience than I anticipated haha
